Comments: I met an 87 year old veteran this weekend who was stationed to the PBM that crashed on Jan 18, 1953. He had blocked the memory of the crash until the early 1990's and is still missing a large chunk of what happened after the crash. Researching this event online, I saw that survivors were rescued by the Halsey Powell crew, but I also note there were 2 POWs captured...I'm not sure which group this gentleman was in. Are there any folk out here who remember this rescue? I am looking for any port where the survivors might have been taken for medical care.
The name of the gentleman I met who was part of the PBM crew is Robert Chester Mann.
I know he served in the Army in WW2 then in the Navy and again in the Coast Guard.
I'm simply trying to help him fill in a gap of time in his life. He states that he cannot get info through the VA

He says he's attended all but one of the reunions, so most of you probably have met him in one of the recent ones. If you've missed out, however, and want to talk to him again, his phone number is (714) 761-8249.
