Comments: My father was on the USS Collett as a MM3 1948-52. He has the Navy Unit Citation
for Inchon as part of the "Sitting Duck Squadron". My question is, I believe the
ducks were given the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation as well. Can
ANYONE confirm or deny this...my internet search is not coming up with anything
"official" like.

Comments: Hello, my wife's uncle served aboard the USS Collette during the Korean War. Last night he told me an amazing story about being shelled by the N Koreans and how he and his fellow sailors narrowly escaped.
Mr. Desselman is in the first stages of Alztheimers and doesn't remember all of the details.
I'm wondering if there is a place/resource, where I might research specific battles. It's my belief that he just wants to revist his tour of duty and I would like to help him in any way I can.
Bless you,

Comments: My father, William C. Webb, was a Marine pilot on the carrier USS Bennington, CV20, in action off Iwo Jima, when he crashed on takeoff on February 22, 1945. According to his WWII aviator's log, he was picked up by the USS Collet, DD730. As he told it, a Navy seaman had to jump into the water to assist in his rescue. He always said he owed his life to this man. He never knew his name and I would like to find him if possible. My dad died in January, 2007 and I know he would want me to thank his rescuer on his behalf. As I was not born at that time, I suppose I owe my life to him as well. Any information will be appreciated.

He was hit by a projectile that nearly took off his leg below the knee. He still has the projectile and uses it for a doorstop today. Swenson (DD-729), USS Henderson (DD-785) and USS Gurke (DD-783). The destroyers comprised Destroyer Squadron 9 (DESRON9) and became known as The Sitting Duck Squadron, for their pre-invasion assault on Wolmi-Do Island at Inchon, Korea on September 13, 1950. These six ships received the Navy Unit Commendation for their bravery and heroism on this historic day.
We like to locate veterans of DESRON9 to determine potential interest for organizing a Sitting Duck Squadron Reunion, to be held in 2004 at a yet to be determined location in the United States.
