Comments: I was a Sonarman aboard USS Lyman K Swenson DD729 during the Korean war. I knew Lt. Dave Swenson, KIA September 13, 1950 during the Inchon, Korea engagement. He was a fine officer but was not, I repeat not, related to the USS Lyman K Swenson DD729 namesake.
Fact, as told to me by our 1950-51 DD729 Captain Robert Schelling:
Captain Lyman Knute Swenson, born October 23,1892, KIA WWII November 13, 1942 for whom DD729 was named, correct name spelling was Swensen. When he first entered the US Naval Academy, the clerk misspelled his name and so it was throughout his Naval records and career. To my knowledge, the records were never corrected. Strange, but true.

Comments: Does anyone from the Swenson remember a boatswain's mate named Goodin? He was from Georgia. He was aboard the Swenson in 1950 during the Inchon action. Later we served together aboard the USS Gloucester, PF 22. I was a seaman then, but we always got along, partly I suspected, because we both had come off tincans, in my case the Marshall. If anyone has info on Goodin, I would appreciate hearing.

Comments: I am currently stationed at Great Lakes Naval Base and collect Navy memoriablia. Yesterday a retired Master Chief brought me a framed Shellback Certificate from the USS Swenson. The individual's name is Seaman Robert Wade Winston. If anybody knows this individual or has a story they would like to share, it would be appreciated.
very Respectfully,

My brother was named after a shipmate of my Dad's, Howard E., who lost his life, prior to 1948. Any info would be welcomed.
Thank you, Lynn

Comments: We are trying to locate and contact former members of the Korean War who served aboard the following destroyers: USS DeHaven (DD-727), USS Mansfield (DD-728), USS Collett (DD-730), USS Lyman K. Swenson (DD-729), USS Henderson (DD-785) and USS Gurke (DD-783). The destroyers comprised Destroyer Squadron 9 (DESRON9) and became known as The Sitting Duck Squadron, for their pre-invasion assault on Wolmi-Do Island at Inchon, Korea on September 13, 1950. These six ships received the Navy Unit Commendation for their bravery and heroism on this historic day.
We like to locate veterans of DESRON9 to determine potential interest for organizing a Sitting Duck Squadron Reunion, to be held in 2004 at a yet to be determined location in the United States.
