Comments: In preparing the obituary for Charles Arthur "Dutch" Weitz (1922-2009), I came across a discharge paper that included his service onboard the USS Owen, DD-536. Is there any way to find out the exact dates he was on this vessel and where the vessel was at that time?

Comments: My name is Jimmy Cowgill. I was looking through the Korean War Project web site,
and came across a message from Jody Cogan Guy. She was requesting information about your dad.
You may have already received the information you were requesting. This is the info that I can give. I also served on the USS Owen during the Korean war.
If your dad was Robert E. Cowan, and live in Lakeside California, at that time, I knew him.
Robert was a Machinist Mate, and was regular navy, opposed to naval reserve. Regular navy were the sailors who joined and the reserves were the ones who were called to active duty.
Robert was a real nice guy. He was liked my everyone aboard ship. I do have a book about the Owen, its history, and its tour in Korea and the around the world, after we left Korea. I can copy the pages, and send them to you if you wish. Please give me your mailing address. And, if you have any questions, I will be happy to try to answer them.

Comments: I have a vintage illustration of the USS Owen. It's by Will Cressy copyright 1944. It's not in great shape but could be matted and framed. It would make a nice gift for someone who served on the ship. On the top it says Albert F. Smith EM 3/C. The outside dimensions are about 14 by 20 inches.

I can mail only within the USA and will send it to the first person who contacts me that wants it.

Send me your address! Thanks and I hope you enjoy it!
