Comments: My Dad was a TE3 for the Navy in Korea. He passed away in 1978 and I never knew what his job consisted of while he served. My son is now hoping for an appointment in the USNA and I would like to share his story. Can anyone provide me with details? My fathers name is Richard Samuel Edwards Jr. He would have been 85 yrs old next year.

Comments: As the U.N. stepped up it's attacks around Kansong,
the ROK 1st. Division hurled itself against the
enemy,
defenses re-established there. The USS Blue-DD-744,
and the USS Evans-DD-754 were fired on near Yo-do
without damage, and Operation Cave Dweller went into
effect. This operation sent the USS New Jersey-BB-62
under Capt.David M.Tyree, and the USS Leonard F.Mason-
DD-852 under the command of Cdr.J.B.Ferriter to
harass enemy troops at the location. On 11,July,1951,
they approached the bomb-line and opened fire on enemy
troop concentrations, and supply buildings around
Kansong. Working with shore fire control teams
spotting enemy troop build-ups, Operation Cave Dweller
caused around 129 enemy deaths, and many enemy
wounded. Well done, USS Mason-DD-852.
