Comments: My father would talk alot about being in the navy, he loved it, he even
got
my sister and brother in to the navy. I wasn't able due to personal
reasons. Anyway when my daughter was 3 years old he made her a
little
sailor suit by hand for when my sister came home on leave and even
taught
her how to put her hand up to her head in the right spot to welcome
her
home. Very cute!!!!! Dad talked also about alot of his shipmates but w/
my
memory I'm sorry I can't remember their names. Lately I have been
having
some strange dreams about being in the navy fighting w/Dad on
different
ships and as I said above I have never been in.Iwas wandering if maybe
somebody might be able to help me w/this if they know my

China Sea and the Gulf of Tonkin. We were escorting the Kitty Hawk and providing offshore bombardment along with the rest of the Destroyer Squadron. On our
last tour (1964) we ran into the Asthabula (sp) and had to go into Subic Bay for repairs. I just want to
say hello to any and all that served aboard this fine
Destroyer.

I'm sorry, I don't even know what his rank was or what he did. He died in 1984 from cancer with his family nearby. Comments: I reported aboard the BLACK on 4 July 1955 from the USS WATTS (DD-567) and stayed aboard until I was discharge on June 1956 in the Phillippines . The ship was going overseas again in June 1956 and alto I had 2 weeks before end of enlistment, I had to go with the ship from Long Beach before letting me off the ship. My operations officer was Lt. Jackson and I think my QMC was Donald Sanderson.I would like to contact these 2 men if anyone knows their whereabouts. I enlisted in the Reserves in Long Beach in Jan. 1958 and remained in the Reserves for 25 yrs and retired as a QMCS in 1983.
