Comments: Greetings, I wrote a message a year ago for my Uncle Bob Reed who was looking to make contact with his crewmates that served on the USS Porterfield during the years 1951-1954 (3 years, 9 months, 9 days as my Uncle you to state). Unfortunately he passed away last month at age 85 before we could find anyone that he could connect with.

I wish we could post pictures on this website. I have some good pictures of his crew.

Comments: My uncle, Richard Lowell Bayless was aboard the Porterfield approximately 1952-1956 and was in gunnery depth as a sonarman. Please forgive me if I filled this out incorrectly. I did not have an opportunity to get to know my uncle as he passed away in a terrible automobile accident in 1956 at age 19. I would love to hear from anyone with any information at all, no matter how small it may seem. I really have nothing, no pictures, no stories. ..thank you.

the USS Essex-CV-9, was hit by enemy flak, crashed in

Comments: Does anyone recognize my father's name? He passed away in 1970, and I have inherited his photos, etc., which I'm willing to scan/share from my father's service in the US Navy aboard the USS Porterfield in the Korean War.

I have some good B and W photos of him and some of his shipmates at sea.

I have a news clipping from The Mirror, LA, Sat., 4/28/51, "3 More Destroyers Rejoin Pacific Fleet"

Comments: Ray, I saw your comment in the USS Marshall file. I remember you from boot camp as one of the contingent of North Carolinians. You mentioned Homer Sagely, Joe Szabo and Jack Reilly, all of whom I served with. Szabo and I were close buddies during my Marshall days. If you were a radarman on the Porterfield, you surely knew Gene (Chick) See. Sadly, Gene died in 2002. He and I were from the same home town, graduated from high school together and joined the Navy together in January 1951. Hope this fills in some gaps for you.
