Comments: The USN destroyer USS English - DD-696, in Sept. 1950, while on it's way to the Korean War,
had a change of command, while making the 50-mile journey through the Panama Canal. The
ceremony began with Commander Matthew DeMaria,USN, in command of DD-696, in the Gatun
Locks on the Atlantic ocean side of the Panama Canal. As the ship left Miraflores Lake, and
entered the Pacific ocean, Commander Raymond J. Toner,USN, assumed command of the
USS English, thus English was commanded by one commanding officer in the Atlantic ocean,
and by another commanding officer in the Pacific ocean, on the same day.
