Comments: The USS McKean-DD-784 ( Mighty Mac), dropped 84 depth charges in a
24 hour period, under her Skipper, Cdr. John C. Weatherwax, USN. Soviet submarines were
based at Seisun Naval Base, Port Arthur, during the Korean War. Three classes of Soviet
subs were based there during the Korean War. There was an intensive 29 hour attack by UN
forces, on a submarine sonar contact, in the Yellow Sea on 28, July 1951. It was hushed-up,
by the CIA.

Comments: Captain John Craig Weatherwax, USN, USNA-1939, was the skipper
of Mighty Mac in the Russian Submarines fracas of 18,Dec. 1950.
Because Washington and the Kremlin would not acknowledge this
top secret fracas, Mighty Mac and Capt. Weatherwax did not
receive any recognition, until the book Blind Man's Bluff, by
Sherry Sontag and Christopher Drew came out some 47 years later.
Mr. Weatherman was in the USS Omaha-CL-4 boarding party, that
seized the German freighter S.S. Odenwald off Brizil in WW-II,
and he later became a submariner. Some of his duty assignemts;
USS California-BB-41,1939, USS Omaha-CL-4,1940-1943, XO,USS Hake-

USS Flounder-SS-251,1946-47, Commanding Officer, Fleet Anti-
Submarine War Fare School, San Diego,Ca, 1969. The Captain has
passed on. God bless this brave man.
