Comments: My Dad, Raymond JJ Russell served on the USS Rowan from 1950 to about 1954 as a Boilderman. He was a Chief Petty Officer at the time. He went on all of the deployments of the ship. I am interested in any photos or other media that might show crew or ship during this time period. Dad also served aboard the USS Patterson, DD 392 during WWII, from the attack at Pearl Harbor to Okinawa.

Comments: I have become quite interested in my fathers' time in the service. He served aboard the Destroyer USS Rowan signing on July6,1950. Satus was Lt.J.G./Division Medical Officer. You should see him transferring from one destroyer to another on a cable stretched from ship to ship...across open ocean sitting in a little seat.He left his assignment in 1951.He was in places such as Sasebo,Japan, Tai Pei,Formosa, Hong Kong, through the South China Sea,to Kow Loon and the great Pacific to Pearl Harbor. There are not many men still alive from that ship. My father is 85 but he still recalls with great clarity the time he served aboard the Rowan.Unless sailors were sick or something most sailors never saw the doctor but I hope someone knew him that is still alive. My father continued to practice medicine at the San Diego Naval Hospital. He is retired now.I have a hugh picture album of him and the ship and the captain and many of the crew. There are remembrances from ports'of call, money from many countries etc.It is an experience to see what it was like. Write me if you have information.Thank you, Robert W. Trisler son of Dr. J. David Trisler M.D.

Comments: I have come across some information that my grandfather, William H. Wohnus served aboard the USS Rowan that was attacked and I am not sure if it actually went down. Everything I find on the internet is somewhat confusing about the history of the Rowan. He passed away a month before I was born (1/11/65) and I am now very interested in finding out more information. If anyone can point me in the right direction on the history of this attack and what actually happened - how would he have survived etc. or if anyone actually knew him I would be very interested. Thanks for any input!

Comments: I served on the USS Rowas (DD-782) for the year 1953 on COMDESRON 5 staff as Communication Officer.
She was a good ship, the ships company all treated the staff as "ships company" which was refreshing. When we worked with Task Force 77, I stood watch in CIC.
We were hit by shore fire while in Wonsan Harbor, injured the sailor on watch in the after steering engine room and destroyed the XO's wardrobe.
We were operating with Task Group 95.2 along the coast of N.Korea when the armistice was signed, after that, we did relaxed patrols and wold frequently have swim call when all who wished could swim over the side. We always had a couple of men armed with rifles watching for sharks. Fortunately, never saw any.
This is a great effor, keep up the good work,
LCDR H. C. Myers, USNR-Ret.
