Comments: My Grandfather, Allie Carver Bryant JR, A gunners mate on the USS Trathen,
passed away this tuesday, July 9th 2013 after a long battle with Parkinsons and
dementia. You may have known him as AC. If you have a stories, or memories
with him, feel free to message me about them. I would love to hear them. He
served during the Korean war and was a member of the train busters club. He
actually blew up a train of ammo that korea had.

Comments: The USS Trathen DD530 Association is alive and well for another two years and then we will fold. It almost happened two years ago since no one was
willing to take over but two wives and a daughter assumed the responsibilities and kept us going.

It was about to happen again this year but I agreed to take it again for two years. (I had it 2001 through 2006.)

If you served on the Trathen, I urge you to plan to
attend at least one of the two final reunions. We
will be in Cincinnati September 2013 and Portland, OR
2014. Information about both will be in future
newsletters. If you are not an association member
and are interested, please contact me.

Comments: On this date 1953 the USS Trathen DD530 gained
membership in the Trainbusters Club by destroying an enemy supply train near Iwon.

The 13 March NY Times reported In east coast surface action, the destroyer U.S.S. Trathen stopped a train near Iwon with three direct hits. The damaged locomotive escaped into a tunnel, but the ship's guns blasted the remainder of the train with twenty hits. The adjacent road bed was torn up and the entrance of the tunnel sealed.

The commuter on the LIRR reading the paper mentioned this to my father who exclaimed That's my son's ship The person tore out and gave the article to my dad.

Comments: I know how the Korean Veterans were ignored because I was the first president and founder of Huntington Women In Support Of Our Men In Vietnam. Korean War Vets supported our efforts to recognize them during what the country called a conflict. The organization got the first Memorial in the United States dedicated to Vietnam Veterans in 1972 with the help of Korean War Veterans. THE KOREAN VETERIANS WEREN'T VILIFIED, DEBASED AND CALLED MURDERES, RAPISTS BY ONE OF THEIR OWN LIKE JOHN KERRY DID AFTER HIS SERVICE.

Comments: Dominic "Mimi" Sanfilippo was a BT on the Trathen from 51-55.

One of his comical stories he tells is the time he wanted to use a CPO's ( he thinks it was Purcell (?) ) rod and reel to fish while at Guantanamo Bay. Well he didn't get permission but decided to use it anyway. Grabs it and takes off to the fantail. Gets everything ready and on his first cast he lets it sail.......REALLY LETS IT SAIL! .......rod, reel and all...right into the bay. Says he spent about two hours dragging with a grappling hook to get that thing back on board..

He would like to stay in touch wit all of the shipmates he can...

His # here at the shop is 205-328-5140 and is generally here 9 - 5 CST...

Thank you

Sam Sanfilippo
