Comments: My brother, Ernest W (Wally) Erickson, EM3 (always known as 'Erick', just as I was), served on the Maddox from '52 through early '56. He was aboard, in the ammo passing line for the forward gun turret when a shore battery, near Wonsan, made a direct hit on the gun turret. I believe either 1 or 2 of his close friends were killed in the incident, and Wally was seriously wounded in the leg and stomach. He was sent to a hospital facility for treatment, but was quickly returned to the Maddox for the duration of his enlistment.
My understanding was that they never did remove all the shrapnel, and he was in serious and constant pain until this contributed to his death in April 1959. Following his example, I enlisted in Dec '55, and served as an ET2 until Dec '59 (served aboard the Waxwing, MSF389; Ajax, AR6; Mataco, ATF86; and Aeolus. ARC3). I was always very proud of the example my 'big brother' provided to me. If there are any still out there that may have served with Wally, don't hesitate to drop me a short note.
Thanks, Ronald Erickson

Comments: My brother , who served aboard the USS Maddox during the Korean War, would like info. as to the wherabouts (or disposition) of the Maddox. Is there an organization or reunion schedule of this ship's former crew? (He says there was a bronze plaque installed in the ship with a list of all the WW II and Korean Wars ship's casualties - including his. The whereabouts of this would be of interest, also).
Thanks much. T.W.
