Comments: I had the pleasure of talking to a gentleman recently that served in both WWII and the Korean War. He served valiantly aboard the USS Shelton (1950-1952). Even now at 96 years old, I saw the vigor in his eyes, the honor in his heart and the pride in his voice as he so vividly recalled his time serving his country. I don't know how many more heroes from this generation are left, but I know my generation owes them a great debt. They made sacrifices too great and horrific to sometimes mention. I just want to say as a veteran myself and as a citizen of this country...Thank you for all that you have endured, thank you for all that you have sacrificed, THANK YOU for laying down your lives so I may have mine.

H.M.N.Z.S.Taupo. We were with U. S S. Shelton when they were hit
and took 15 casualties, we stood by her while repairs were made
to the shell hole in her bow. We took one hit and some close
misses from shore batteries the previous morning, no casualties
but me and my gun's crew were soaked in freezing water from the
close ones. I am leaving on 21st of July to attend the 60th
anniversary of the cease fire in Korea. I send greeting and good
wishes to my American comrades in arms and wish them well. I am
79 years old and celebrated my 17th birthday patrolling the
coast of North Korea near Son Jin.

Comments: My Father served aboard the Shelton from 1950-1954 as a Fire Control Technician on one of the 3" 50 Mounts. He's told me several stories from his days aboard the Shelton and is very proud to have served aboard her. He's 80 now and never been to a ships reunion. I'd like to try and get him to go to one if someone could provide me with the next date and location. Thanks...

Comments: My good friend Steve Janetis served aboard the USS Shelton during the KW. He was involved in the gun battle with the North Korean shore battery, was wounded, and later received the Silver Star and the Purple Heart for his actions that day in getting his gun back into action. Sadly, Steve passed away about 3 years ago. He spoke often of the Shelton and his shipmates towards the end of his life. He had a framed photograph of the Shelton in a position of honor on his living room wall.
