Comments: Captain Pettyjohn insisted the crew warp the ship
into the drydock at the shipyard, in deference to
old (uss Constitution) which was berthed
quite near to us. All hands including Chiefs and some of the jr. officers assisted. it was quite a happy
evolution. (remember those rough atlantic unreps?)
This was easy. As I recall the drydock had an inscription at its head: "commissioned during the administration of pres. John Quincy Adams, completed
during the administration of pres. Andrew Jackson."
Capt. Pettyjohn was an excellent skipper and related
well to the crew."remember men, you are warriors and
this is a warship" Tin can Navy forever!

I served on fiske 1971-72. Skipper's name was
Pettyjohn, first name was William, I think. He was
indeed a good Capt. I was an RM and some of us printed
a weekly newspaper - 'The Binnacle' while underway.
We warped her manually into dryd alongside Constitution at Charlestown Navy Yard, Boston

Comments: Looking for someone who remembers a disturbance in Lourenco Marques involving crew members from the USS Noa DD-841 and USS Fiske DD 842.
Crew members from both ships were on liberty in the port of Lourenco Marques, Mozambique. Crew members were advised to wear white uniforms and some crew members were attacked in a bar by Portuguese military and civilian personnel. The situation quickly spilled out in the street and escalated into a major disturbance, resulting in a numerous injuries to crew members on both ships. This incident took place during the Red Sea Cruise for both ships in approx. 1973.

Comments: **UPDATE** These four ships traveled together during the time my father served in Korea. Dad advised me that the designation for them may have been A73. They sailed from Rhode Island all through the Mediterranean such as Greece and Italy on their way to Korea. My dad managed to make good friends with the cook (if you knew him you would know why he did that) and several of him and his buddies from the Hawkins would end up in a brawl of one sort or another on the mainland. Dad was from PA (Montrose, Brackney, Choconut) and they all traveled to Binghamton, Johnson City and were pulled over by the police in this instance and managed to talk their way out of being arrested for speeding and general rowdiness. If any of you remember any of this vaguely sounding familiar, please feel free to contact me via mail or e-mail. I would love to hear these stories from another perspective. Thanks from a grateful daughter to all of you who served. A special thanks goes out to those of you who forwarded information on to me about the Hawkins, that was very much appreciated by me and my dad.

Comments: I was aboard U.S.S. Doyle DMS 34 (A high speed mine sweeper, subsequwntly used in the filming of THE CAINE MUTINY) in Jan 1950. I was sent to the Naval Station for discharge three daysbefore the Doyle was sent to Korea. I was discharged, but re-called to duty in October '52 and sent to Boston, where the U.S.S. Fiske DDF842 (decommissioned at the time) was in drydock being overhauled and recommissioned as U.S.S. Fiske DDR842. She was subsequently sent to Gitmo for shakedown. While there U.S.S. Wisconsin arrived on a mid-shipman cruise. 20 of us from Fiske were lucky enough to board her for an extended weekend cruise to Port au Prince Haiti. Thence back to Boston for minor repairs and radar equipment up-date. Thence to Newport, Rhode Island, our home port. Operation Mariner, to Greenland and Iceland introduced us to heavy weather sailing, and related damage. Back to Newport. I was transfered to U.S.S. Braine DD630 in Boston, awaiting discharge in October '54.

P.S. I'm not really an admiral, but it was my nickname in grammer school.

Comments: I think you had better check your dates as to when the tour of duty took place. I had just finished boot camp at the great lakes in june of 1950,when I was immeadiatly put aboard the Fiske, we had no leave after boot camp. I went aboard and we were headed for korea right away. We took a short jaunt to newfoundland ,and that was it . your dates are wrong!!!!!
