Comments: I was on board the USS STRONG DD758, one of the 4 DD's that made up our team. The story as it was told to me is: The STRONG was to sail with the USS IOWA up the YALU (I think) the IOWA's mission was to shell the Hydro- elect plants, which she did, we(theSTRONG) were to check for any enemy subs that would threaten the IOWA. While the IOWA was taking care of business the STRONG was shelling the rail lines the enemy was using and any trains that were on the rails. When we returned to the TASK FORCE we learned of the BARTON'S mine hit, she supposedly took our position in the Task Force and as fate would have it also took our hit. This occurred during the 1952 World Cruise, we also waited for the BARTON to be repaired for the return trip back to the USA, we sailed into Norfolk as we had left, a full team of Destroyers.

Comments: Hello,
My name is Crystal McCay and my father Robert McCay served on the USS Barton DD 722. I have photos of the Barton and after it was hit by that floating mine. When they towed it to Japan he took so many photos. There is not much documentation and I want to put a book together and the photos so people really know what happened to our loved ones. I have pictures of the ship and how big the hole was and so many other photos. Please write back so we can put this book together.

Comments: My grandfather served on the Barton when she hit the floating mine and then limped to Sasebo. His name was James Boyette (some called him Jim). We lost him 2 years ago and I am his oldest granddaughter. I myself married a Navy Seabee and my Pawpaw was so proud of him (he never had any grandsons) and they became best buddies and as a wedding present he gave us a pure silver spoon from the Officers mess of the USS Barton. Thats all we have of his service except for a journal that my grandmother had put together of every picture, letter and small memorabilia that he would send back to her. There are so many neat things in that journal about his time on that ship, like a cat that lived on the ship (can't remember the name of the cat though) and a napkin, some movie tickets from times when he got to go to movies on the ship, special event papers from the ship, all kinds of little things. It takes me hours to go through this book looking at every little thing. But I cherish that spoon more than anything. Well the main reason for me writing is this, my husband is getting ready to deploy in August and will either be going to Sasebo or Yukuska. We pray its Sasebo. At one time my Pawpaw had told us that he had gotten in touch with someone he had served with and they told him of a plaque that was at Sasebo commemorating her service and the mine incident. Can anyone tell me if this is true and if it is, is it still there and possibly where it might be? He had also said that he thought they said that all the names of the men who were on her at that time were also on the plaque. We lost him too early. I miss him so much. I would love any pictures or to talk with anyone who served with him. I do have a picture of him with 3 (maybe its 4) other men in uniform posed together and we have no clue who these men are. They are all in their summer dress whites turned to show their left side and looking sharp! It would be neat to share this with the men or the family members of the men who are in this photo with him. I want to Thank anyone in advance for any information they may be able to help me get and maybe I might be able to help someone else out too.
God Bless,
Angela Sourwine,
Granddaughter of (Jim) James Boyette

I don't know if anyone would remember him, but I would love to hear from anyone who might. He would be thrilled to hear from anyone who may have been in the signal gang with him. He has a nice photo of them that was taken on the ship. He also has a photo of their captain.
Please contact me if you have photos or other information that he would be interested in - or if you want to contact him!
Thanks!
