Comments: T'was a sad day for sure in, (44?)
When the tin can Tingey sailed for foriegn shore;
As we pulled underneath the bridge and left Frisco bay,
I could see us sinking Jap ship as if it were play.
Now we pulled into Pearl one bright sunny day,
And for two goddamn months around those islands we did play;
We fired more rounds than all the ships combined,
But as for the score we made we might as well been blind.
Our first mission was a rough one, to the Johnson Island we went,
To pick up the Washington who was then badly bent;
As we pulled alongside over the loudspeaker they did say,
"Now all hands topside shift into the uniform of the day".
We left Pearl Harbor once again and for Majuro we were bound,
Of course Miner didn't say so but the scuttlebutt got around;
Now when you come in most ships, it means more rest and recreation,
But on this goddamn Tingey it means more work and dissipation.
Whenever we got ready for recreation, in the boat there wasn't room,
Cause everybody made liberty just to shoot craps with Johnnie Grooms;
Now everybody says he's got plenty, but me I never say,
But judging from the way he talks, I'd say it was the other way.
From there, we went across the equator, to New Guinea I am told,
It seemed to me with all those Japs, we were rather bold;
At Truk our planes did 4.0, they all hit their goals;
The San Franscisco hit here to when she shot us full of holes.
On the way back we hit Ponape, where we met part of the Jap fleet,
The way those sandpand eluded us, proved for them a mighty fleet;
Now the ship was on the shit list and the Captain must have had flat feet,
For all he done on that trip out was pack mail for the fleet.
Now we've hit Marcus and Wake Islands and we were at Saipan too,
And according to the rotation plan we still have a year to do;
There's one thing that has me in doubt as yet, something that I must tell,
"That is will we ever fire on the enemy before they blow us all to HELL".
THE END

shipboard scenes for the Don Knotts movie "The Incredible Mr Limpit"
on the Tingey around 1962-63.
Dad was serving on the Tingey when it was broadsided at sea on Aug
1, 1963, by the USS Vammen off of San Diego. It was not deemed
economical to repair and was assigned to be sunk during a fleet target
exercise. An ocean-going tug towed it into position and obtained
permission to practice fire its 50 mm cannon before the fleet arrived.
Unexpectedly, the tug sank the Tingey and earned the distinction of
being the only tug to sink a warship and have the silhouette of a
destroyer painted on it.
