Comments:
While executing our ASW screen and interdiction assignments with HMS Glory (TG 95.1 Command) in early 1953, an unidentified undersea contact was
reported and presumed to be a submarine. DD-675 and other destroyers were directed by the TG Commander to identify and eliminate the target as necessary. DD-675 made sonar contact with the target in short order, then after identifying it as a threat, made a depth charge/hedge-hog run over the threat position. Elimination of the threat was verified and DD-675 was credited with sinking an enemy undersea threat presumed to be a submarine.
(Shortly thereafter, higher command re-designated the submarine as an underwater derelict, which are numerous in the area, and any credit regarding threat elimination was redrawn from the record.)
After all these years have past, I've always wondered about this circumstance: was it really a submarine - perhaps Russian operated? Or, was it as designated in the logs?

Comments: My Father, William H Munion BT-3, worked in the firerooms aboard the Hancock during the Korean Conflict and afterwords for the around the world cruise. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with asbestosis and it ultimately claimed him. I would like to know the dates the Hancock was in the shipyard in Newport RI.
Farewell dad, fair winds and following seas.

Comments: Here is a link to photos of the USS Louis Hancock deployment circa 1952.
The Hancock went around the world from Newport, Rhode Island to the
Panama Canal and onto the Pacific. They spent four months off the coast
of Korea doing shore bombardment and escort duty. They escorted the
USS Helena with President Eisenhower aboard. The ship left Korea and
stopped in Hong Kong, the Phillippines, Singapore, India, Myanmar, and
Aden. They went through the Suez Canal and onto Italy, the Riviera,
France and England.

Comments: My father, Richard Knott (Dick), served aboard the Lewis Hancock from
1952 to approximately 1954. He passed away several years ago, but I
recently found a worn copy of the Leaky Louis log from 12 October
1952. The editor was a LTJG Wirth and Co-editor was RMNC Taylor. It is
full of ship humor. An Ensign Miller is mentioned twice. I also have a
hometown news release from when the ship returned from her around
the world voyage in February 1954.
I have scanned both these documents into PDF files and would be
happy to email them to his fellow shipmates or their family members.
Dad had a large stack of slides from his time aboard which include
photos from ports around the world, crossing the equator, underway
replenishment etc.
I plan to get these made into a digital collection sometime this summer
and make them available or see if the Korean War National Museum
wants them.

Comments: How many of you remember the day we were rushed out of Gtmo for an emergency run to track down an unidentified contact? After a search we went to general quarters and fired a charge, bringing up our advisary - a palm tree! We then painted it on the side of our ship along with our other combat ribbons. We all felt that we should receive a combat ribbon titled the order of the palm!

Comments: I have to say that my grandfather was the best man I have ever known in my life time. He was a very smart man, he knew everything there was to know about sports. I love him very much and I miss him very much too. My grandfather passed away resently 3-3-01. It has been very hard on everyone in my life. I am writing because I think he should be remembered. He served in the Navy on the USS Lewis Hancock for 3 years. When i would go to his house he would always tell me stories about being on the ship. And I took that for granted, beacause he always used to say the same stories over and over again, and now I miss that
very much. Life is to short. Live It and Love It.
