Comments: My father served on the ERnest G Small ship, I am totally unsure of what years. His name was Frank Arkenberg, he was a 2nd class Navy Petty Officer. Probably somewhere before 64, but unsure. My father passed away on March 22, 2002, and I was looking for someone who may have served with him on this time period. I would greatly apppreciated any thing. My step mpther of two years will not return any belongings. Thanks his daughter. Kristina

Comments: I was a Radioman 2/c on the USS Tortuga, LSD 26 at Oppama, Japan when we left with the Small after her false bow was attached. She began running normally but once in the open sea the motion was so bad that she had to run backwards and that was 4 to 6 knots tops. We stayed with her, sending over food, since her galley was mostly gone, movies, clean clothing, and standing by for trouble. We even took the Small in tow for a while when her engines developed a strain. I cannot recall how long it took but many many days to Wake Island, (I think)...and due to the damage to her bow during the trip had to leave her there for major repairs. I have a few pics taken the day we left Japan and a few taken at sea on the way to Wake. She had one problem which required a smoke generator to run for a while on her fantail, and I have pictues of that but I never knew what the problem was. One other problem on the voyage, the motion was so pronounced on the Small that seasickness was a major problem for them. Im glad to hear that she got to Long Beach after all these years. I beleive the time from Japan to Wake was 32 days...but my
memory may be faulty...Al Cassell

Comments: I am the daughter of a Korean War veteran, USN. My father served on the USS EG Small. I'm not exactly sure of the years, but I believe it was 1951-1953. He has done all kinds of research about the ship, the incident when the bow was lost, the men who lost their lives in that incident, etc. He has requested documents from the USN, and has been in touch with family of the commander of the ship at that time; he is also in touch with family members of his fallen shipmates. I'm sure he'd enjoy hearing from anyone interested in the same. I'll forward all messages to him. To all the Korean War vets--thank you; I will never forget that freedom is not free.

Comments: I have hundreds of pages of historical data on the EG SMALL, including a 17 page story of my time aboard during two tours in Korea. I have deck logs, battle reports and more.
I will be happy to provide this information to legitimate requests. I have heard a lot of 'war stories' lately from sailors who were never aboard the SMALL.

Comments: I was an STG on The Small during her 27 month WESPAC deployment and left her in December 1966 at Pearl Harbor. I have a little memorabilia from those days including the published 'cruise book' of that deployment. Am interested in hearing from any old 'Road Runners' who still remember steaming hard both at sea and ashore during those times.

I do recall his reference to a seal that became the ship's mascot....I've got pictures of her as well. I would be interested in a ship's roster and any information re: Small's disposition.

Comments: To all who have been asking about the incident that took the Small's bow and killed several men: As mentioned earlier, my father (alive and well, by the way), Capt Robert Neyman, USN, was the skipper during that action. He recently wrote a four-page article about what happened, and we have original photographs of the bow breaking away and being sunk by a tug. Drop me a note if you would like copies of any of these things, and I'll try to accommodate. Perhaps I can e-mail scanned images, too.
