Subject: ON BOARD JUNE 61 TO MARCH 64. JUST B4 DECOMMISSIONED

Harold Precht wrote on June 16, 2025

City and State: PANAMA CITY FL

Unit: FWD ENGINE ROOM

Service or Relationship: Mar 61 - Nov 65

Comments: Onboard 6/61. Based at Treasure Island in the middle of San Francisco Bay-- Stuck me in aft boiler rm, cleaning tubes, smoke stack & bilges. UGGH! After 4 days Eng Off. says .. if you want, I can put you down in the Engine room... to which I tried to argue that I signed on for EM, Electrician mate! His reply... one time offer, either you or a guy named 'Botos' gets it tomorrow.
Sorry Botos, but that's why you were a BT (Boiler Tech) & I was an MM (Machinist Mate)
Great time with all, Geo Spencer -welder, Mike Spaich MM, Robert Leroy Thomas MM (Peaches .. fair skinned & blond hair), Harkey MM2 (Brother was on a DDE attached to our group), Gene Farmer MM? I think. Mike Boyle - deck ape- we were best buds ...
Eng Chief Coonrod (looked like a bulldog πŸ‘πŸ˜€)... chief found out Mike & I had a car & offered us unlimited overnights at his house in Vallejo if we would drive him back & forth. He had a wife, son & daughter. His daughter worked at the theater & would unlock the back door so we could sneak in & watch movies.
We were 17 & 18 & saved up for the 53 Mercury 2 door. Couple months after we got it, I took it to a gas station in town for an oil change... the kid probably 15 says " You want to have the Engine blown out? Clean out all the old oil??" πŸ€”
Uh sure, if thats necessary-bad idea🀯
Plugged up the oil fill & shoved 150lb air hose into the dip-stick tube πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’«πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’« & blew out all the seals!
Sucker leaked oil 1 qt/100 mi from then on.
I took it back a week later & told the owner what his kid did... he refused to admit it & the owner blew us off.
We continued to drive it & then Kennedy called up all the reserves for the Cuban Missle Crisis & told us to store our cars & we deployed to WESPAC... well I parked tha car where I thought we could, but at the end of the cruise we were notified it was impounded & we owed about $300 in fees. Mike & I talked but we only paid $350 for it, so we let them have it.🀷🏻
That's a fun story, but even better we got back to TI & a buddy... forgot his name- had just re-upped & was buying a new car & offered me his Red &White 55 Olds 98 & I took him up on it.
Beautiful car, Tuck n Roll R&W interior, power windows, brakes & AM FM radio with Wonder Bar technology ... presets stations & a touch bar that you could touch & it would just seek to the next station πŸ‘... it also had a foo on the floor next to the dimmer that would also switch stations.
Well joker that I am, I'd load up a few guys cruise the drive-ins.
We'd be driving along 'blaring strong' & a country song would come on & I'd tell the radio "I hate country music, change the channel" . Well dutifully the radio would switch stations!
Well the guys would be awe'd & ask How, What??... and I'd explain it was also voice activated!
Go ahead & try it! ... one guy would ask & it would change.. another guy said, let me try... he did, but it wouldn't change. So I told him you need to use a firmer tone.
Pretty soon I'd have all the guys yelling at the thing & finally confess to the foo on the floor.... so many fun times... but then you guessed it ... Drinkin & Drivin "NO MIX TOO GOOD"
Drove it off the road on the way to Half Moon Bay... Going too fast around a corner to the right & slid out into oncoming traffic & jerked it back into my lane just as the road curved left again . I hit the mountain on my right which slid me to the center of the car, I hit Mike & he cracked a rib... now im in the center of the car with the steering wheel on my left, we're going straight & the road curves right again... off into the air we go , cleared the farmers 6' fence & crunch in the middle of the pasture we landed.
Wheels spread apart, bumper, both fenders, hood, windshield, both doors crumpled & a bent frame... but hey we were young & invincible right?
US Navy... never a dull moment!
I salute all my friends & fellow "Tin Canners" Keep the faith baby, Keep the faith 🫑
