Comments: i am seeking information on my deceased father's military service - especially the period of May 1960 and Nov 1960 when he entered Korea as a 2nd Ranger Plt. Ldr. My father died in 1989, and a year prior to that, told my sisters and I the story of this particular period when he was stationed in Korea. He said he had remained quiet for almost 30 years but wanted us to know before he died - this "secret". This being that between May 1960 and Nov. 1960, he was actually a part of a special ops unit consisting of a dozen men that went on numerous missions into vietnam. the mission was to map the ho chi minh trail. i have researched extensively this past year, obtained his military records and have numerous questions and yet no real answers. can anyone out there help me? there are some interesting, perplexing facts in his records and i guess we just want the truth and closure. if anyone has advice or info. please contact me. thank you.

Comments: I have not seen anything about the important recognition that has been given to Korean DMZ vets during the past year. The award of the Korea Defense Service Medal and revised award criteria for the CIB should be of interest to many DMZ vets. If you want additional information go to the Korea Veterans of America Inc. website at: http://kdvamerica.org/
This recognition is long overdue for the thousands of men that put their lives on the line over several decades.
Congrats to all that served.

Comments: I was a Sgt teaching Top Secret crypto at FLW,Mo when I decided I wanted to go to Nam after a year.Felt that I needed to go ,as so many of my friends had.Sent the 1049 in for request and received my orders for APO 96224.A friend had just returned from duty in Korea and he informed me that was the Korea APO,not VN.Tried to get orders changed, but could not work with Uncle Sam.Never will forget getting off the plane at Kimpo and smelling the pig pen scent of a nasty place.
Went to the 2nd Replcement Detachment and finally after 3 days received my orders for my duty across the Imjin river.Having a critical MOS the BDE did not know where to put my duties where they could benefit from my tour.My first assignment was to work with a civilian contractor from Texas that had a governmemt contract to lay lead telephone cable underground along the complete 38th.My job was to assist supervision and protection of the 30 or so Korean civilians that were digging the ground of 4ft to lay the cable. It was either a Sat or Sunday in the afternoon when we heard loud explosions and small arms fire about a quarter of mile away.Very quicky we crabbed our M-14's and I made sure my 45 was stacked.Upon arrival at the site, the enemy had crossed back into the north, but I will never ,never forget the carnage the bastards had done. The Sgt's 45 was missing as well as all the men's cloths. The 4 men were are killed to my speculation from the grenades, but the north koreans wanted to make sure each man was dead and had used the Sgt's 45 to shoot each man in the head.Immediately our Divisions went on full alert, looking for a full frontal attack.By the grace of God it did not happen. For years I have lived this in my mind and more than likely will the rest of my life.My duty continued for several more months, and I persnally found one undetonated anti tank mine in the middle of the road close to Pammujon. The other was a 155 bomb the Korean's were hitting with a pick saying it was a water line.Needless to say I am shivering now as I think back running up to the sight and hearing the picks hit the bomb.I called demo in and they said that several stikes had come lose to the cone detinator.I can say that this was the hardest part of my tour as we moved our Division from Libby bridge to Freedom at Camp Greaves where I took over operations of the switchboard, located in a bunker from the early 50s.Later on took the duties of being theater manager at Camp Greaves, where I received a letter of appreciation from the Commanding AFMPS in Seoul.Earned my Imjin badge and diploma and display them proudly.Developed Diebtes 13 years ago from Agent Orange and hope all DMZ Vets will fight for your compensation if you were exposed.AO can cause a lot of different medical conditions, the worst being lung, prostate and other cancers.Sorry this comment colume has taken up so much space, but I just had to relate these actions to my fellow brothers in arms.May God Bless All of You and lets not forget our comrades that gave the ultimate sacrafice. Comments: I spent many days in 1969-70 along or adjacent to the south boundary of the DMZ; from the center to the eastern end. Traveled with ROKAF personnel usually from HQ ROKAF, or the ROKAF AC and W radar sites at Youngmunsan and Kangnung. Never saw other Americans (Air Force or Army) in my DMZ travels except once. I met up with a Pacific Ground Electronics Engineering Installation Agency (PAC GEEIA) team from Hawaii doing support work for ROKAF and us. They were late to our planned rendezvous because of vehicle problems. Given the desolate and rugged nature of Korea in the central DMZ area, it was not easy getting in touch and confirming that they were OK.
Visited many locations near the DMZ used by ROK Army units, or just plain unoccupied - just the wind blowing. Briefings given by ROK Army were done in Korean with pointers slapping the board for enemy locations and stopping just short for friendlies. Despite language issues, their message was clear. Travel by road was rough or impossible in most places. Road trips from Seoul to the central DMZ area often took half a day just to get there. Closer to the DMZ, my ROKAF companions looked very closely at the very few civilians. Once at their direction, I made a sharp turn around and we went to a ROK Army camp which quickly deployed troops on hearing our news. It concerned a small group of Koreans. Dressed as farmers, they were walking along the side of the road, in single file, and a uniform 2 meters apart - I wonder!
When available, ROKAF helicopters were used to get from Seoul or the Kangnung ROKAF airbase to sites of interest. This made the travel easier if they stayed after dropping us off. If not, we hiked to a road and flagged down a vehicle (usually a truck) to get to a base or town and phone for a ROKAF ride. Stayed once at Camp Page after such a trip. Since I was carrying an M-16 rifle, this usually resulted in a crowd of Koreans wanting to look at the rifle and me. At this time, only a very few ROK Army troops who returned from Vietnam had the M-16 and it was new and different to most Koreans outside of Seoul. I guess a USAF type also was reason to look.
At this time, it was normal to be issued a 38-cal pistol when going into these areas near the DMZ. After actually seeing the rugged nature of the countryside, and lack of nearby military units, I asked for and got an M-16 and a pistol. No one questioned my request at any time. I now wonder if this was wise or foolish. However, my ROKAF travel companions never raised a question or an eyebrow.
In the areas of the DMZ that I was around, there usually was not much of anything in the way of villages, towns, buildings, or improvements beside roads. Usually all you saw was rugged ground, lots of ridges, brush, and rocky soil. There were some pine trees the farther east you went towards Kangnung. Next to no civilians, especially within 20 km of the DMZ. Sometimes I would see a rusted barbed wire fence, a faded sign identifying the south boundary of the DMZ, or a minefield warning. The exception was the seacoast north of Kangnung on the East Korea Sea (aka Sea of Japan). The views were spectacular and reminded me of the seacoast in Maine and Oregon.
On these ground trips near the DMZ, we had to take food and water with us because no military bases or civilian town were convenient. On my first trip, I carried food and water and eventually shared it with my ROKAF companions. On all subsequent trips, I brought along more of everything, but we also shared carrying it.

Comments: Actually I was a forward observer assigned to the mortar platoon and HHC of the 1/23. I entered my unit as "B" Co. because after returning north from Blue Lancer Valley, most of my time in the DMZ was spent on G.P. Seiler with "B" Co. and it would only be someone from that company that could verify my memories of a few incidents. These incidents occurred in the spring of "68" The first one was during daytime. We were observing a North Korean being chased north by a party of either Americans or S. Koreans to the East of G.P. Seiler. There was machine gun fire coming from the north, probably from inside N. Korea. We were wondering who they were firing at when suddenly the air was filled with the unmistakable sound of rounds going past us. It was the only time in Korea that I felt truly in danger and that lasted only until I reached the trenches. The firing went on for hours and if my memory serves me right, an APC or tank came up and began firing across into N.K. This latter part I'm short on memory.
The second incident occurred at night and was witnessed only by two others beside myself. We observed a light up on a hill to the southeast of us and watched it descend down and towards our G.P. As it approached the gate the Sgt. in charge of the G.P., (no officer in charge then) sent me in to the command center to get an illumination flare. Of course I had a flashlight with the red filter and mistakenly picked out a flare used other than for illumination. The plan was for the Sgt. to pop the flare and we would begin firing at first sight. When the flare went off, we were so startled by the obvious wrong color we didn't fire a shot. The N. Korean(I assume) jumped down off the gate and took off.
It was no more than a minute before the Battalion Commander was on the radio asking us what what going on. You see, the flare we sent up was a signal that we needed help. Maybe someone remembers this unbelievable incident and could verify if it occurred the way I remember.
The third and final one occurred during a brush fire very close to Seiler. If there was any doubt that there were N. Koreans close by observing and listening, those doubts ended there. The fire got so close to where the NK was hiding outside the fence that he just stood up and ran. One of the men on the GP ran out the gate and disappeared into the smoke after which we heard a lot of firing coming only from an M14. No luck in getting the NK but a little excitement. Anyways, would appreciate it if anyone from "B" Co. could verify these events.

Comments: I have recently discovered all the sites that relate to the Korean DMZ and have actually "joined" a few organizations, as I am not much of a "joiner" It helps to share I guess....On 30 July 1968 @ approximately 00:48 hours near a place called "Mortar Hill" Just a little ways northeast of the Mayor's House. I was member of a 25 man patrol operating in the DMZ from GP Gladys. We had been broken up into 5 man "rays". A patrol that had set up on Mortar Hill had sprung an ambush and were calling for help (WIA and KIA). My patrol met with two other patrols that were nearby, at the Cross Roads just south of Mortar Hill.I took point. The move to the patrol in trouble was quick and without much caution. A PFC by the name of GOFF met me and led us in..The intensity of fire increased. It appeared that the NKs were being reinforced as well. Large explosions were going off all over the area around us and amongst us. It was later found that the NKs were using some type of large anti-tank grenade with a parachute to allow it to hit on its nose. Several were discovered when day light broke, having not detonated. Someone yelled that we needed to get the wounded and KIA out..that is when I realized that my buddy Rymarchuk was the KIA. He (Riggs) was tore up pretty bad. I grabbed his arms and began to pull him out, down the southside of the hill..as I was dragging him, I realized that his pants had come down to his ankles. It was odd but it struck me that there was no dignity in his pants being down in this situation. I stopped and pulled his pants up and was buckling his belt when some NK's that had apparently flanked us, opened up on me at close range. I used Riggs as a shield and returned fire. I could hear rounds striking Rigg's body and the ground around me. A Sgt Sparks came from behind me and laid down covering fire while I continued to drags Riggs out of the area to a point where we could carry him to GP Gladys. I returned to the ambush area and we pursued the NK's as they fled north, leaving a large number of "blood trails". Apparently we had lost a 5 man patrol that had initially been with Rigg's patrol. That patrol had attmpted to flank the NKs when the ambush was initially sprung but had somehow got lost and were not found until mid-day the next day. We had KIA and 2 WIA. This one of several incidents that I and my unit were involved in in 1968...We did have fun at times in the DMZ..Myself and a fella by the name of Danny URICH crept up to the MDL one day, maybe a little closer and fired M-79's (about 6rds) at Speaker Hill..we did this in an area known as the "Twilight Zone" for those that know, that is the area between unit's AO's. It created quite a stink I guess. The speakers did shut down for a while. Everyone was ask "who did it"??? and no one knew. I understand it became an incident @ JSA...LOL.. anyway, thanks for listening (reading) would like to hear from anyone that operated in this area or knows me...Dale Patton, 5014 Southport Dr, Rowlett, Tx 75088 972 941 2564

Comments: I see where Michael Manchin ran the movies to Camp Kaiser in 67-68. I must have taken his place. I got to Camp Kaiser in March, 1968, after our whole admin class at Leonard Wood was diverted to Korea as part of the build-up following the capture of the USS Pueblo by the North Koreans in February. I worked at Brigade HQ until the summer and weaseled myself into the movie run during the nice weather. There was quite a bit of infiltration going on in 68-69, but I was too young to worry about it. I normally had only one route and that was to Camp Santa Barbara. I would drive down to the "Donut Dollies" shack at Camp Santa Barbara and spend the day with the Red Cross girls. I'd pick up the movie about 3:00 and head back. I'd hand over the movie and take a seat. Free popcorcn. Free movie. Repeat the process 2 or 3 days later. Very tough duty. I'll never forget bringing M.A.S.H. up. The boys almost tore the place apart.
The worst experience for me was going out on excercise in -100 wind chill. The wind was blowing so hard we couldn't get the tents up. It was about 25 degrees below zero. They finally called it off, but several guys lost toes and fingers. We also had a couple of infiltrators. None of the EM's had ammunition, so the officers had to take of them, as I recall. That was as close as I got to any action. Does anyone remember that exercise? I also remember an incident where some members of the Royal Thai Regiment on the other side of Unchoni came into a GI bar with hand grenades and ran all the GI's off. Does anyone else recall that?

Comments: Hello Tony glad to hear from you again. You are right in that history shouldn't be changed but we need to get some of the pepole involved on the same page. I'm going to ask Tommy how many day Steve had in Korea when he was to be "leading" my patrol. Also I think Seckler might know the answer I can't remember for sure but 5 seems to come to mind. I also had to ask Tommy about the grenade thing I can't remember that at all. I just remember the sun moving around the hole that I was laying in. But your right maybe we can get some of the old radio transmissions and that should help clear things up. I know when I was on Battalion C.Q. we taped all calls. See you soon "BROTHER" ED

Comments: I am writing an article about the Plt that I led to RVN in March 1964. I commanded Co C in Pohang at the time. Engineers from Co C and Co B made up the Plt.
We spent almost one month there erecting two water tanks and installing water purification ERADLATORS at Tan Son Nhut Airfield. The tanks were the same type we were erecting at Pohang POL Depot.
Would like to hear from anyone that went with the Plt. I need names of Plt members.
See Entry No. 9220 far down this list for more details on my time in the 44th.

Comments: I served in Korea 1960-1961. Because of the Berlin crisis I served a 3 month extention making my total tour 16 months instead of the original 13 month 'hardship' tour.
I remember seeing aircraft spraying along the DMZ and afterward I became sick. I have been diagnosed with perpiphal neuropathy.
Being in an artillery unit, I was exposed to extrem ely loud noises and now that I am older I have a substantial hearing loss.
Some of the things I was exposed to in Korea are now catching up to me in my later years. The VA does not agree with my claim.
Does anyone who served in Korea in 1960-61 have similar problems?

Comments: It has been several years since I first wrote a message for this publication. It's good to see so many entries. My CO was 1lt William Mctigue from New London, CT. Our 1SG was named Triggs. He 1SG Triggs later became the Battaliion SGM. I saw Gene Nees from Texas a couple times. William Wamsley from Cincinati, Ohio now lives in Floida. I went to RVN in 1968-69. 2lt Snead went from Company B to RVN. I also saw SSG Collier in RVN and another guy but can't remember his name. I saw a guy in O'Hare in Chicago. He yelled my name going down a concourse. (small world) I also saw one of the tailors that worked around the company in RVN. He got off a helo and recognized me. I also remember a William L. Lemon from Chicago who was in B Company. There was a guy from Arkansas named Whorton I remember. Dalton was from ?. My little brother got killed in a auto accident right after I got to Company B. I was gone for a couple weeks and Dalton took care of my gear while I was gone.
We we at Waegon, then went ASCOM, then to Ft. Beavers, then back to ASCOM. I left right after the Pueblo Incident. Hope to hear from anyone of my era.
Best of Luck and God Bless

Comments: I'm doing this for my brother. He is looking for someone that was in his unit, to support what his duties were. He worked on the DMZ where AO was sprayed. He has prostate cancer, which he came down with at the age of 47. The VA has denied has claims because his unit is not listed. He needs this information to fight his degenerating health. Comments: Great Site! I am writing for my dad because he knows absolutely "zilch" about computers. He would be greatly interested in finding anyone he served with in '66 as part of a Davy Crockett DET. He also fondly remembers his time in Camp Kaiser (afetr his tour in Vietnam) during '67. He also talks about the ambush he and his unit "sprung" in '67 when 20+ North Korean Infiltrators came across the MDL. His health is deteriorating and I would like to get him reacquainted with some of his friends from those times. Thank you all for your time, efforts and service in the "land of the morning calm".
