Comments: My tour of duty in the Republic of South Korea
started after the
USS Pueblo capture and ended prior to the USAF
Intel plane being
shoot down. I arrived in country mid-Feb. 1968 and
as an
Infantryman somehow got assigned to a 175MM
artillery unit under
I Corp Artillery (B Battery 6/12 Art. Camp Alex
Williams). Our
compound was 3 miles south (or at least we thought
it was south)
of Camp Casey, Home of the 7th Inf. whom we often
clashed with
in the bars outside the post. I think the town was
named Tong-Du-
Chon, can't be sure now. After 5 months there, and
becoming a
driver/gunner on that beast of a gun, I was
transferred in late
July 68 to B Co, 1/38 Inf. at South Camp Custer.
Since the unit
was understaffed and prepping for their rotation
to the north, I
was immediately sent on afternoon/nightly trips to
the DMZ
fence, patrols, and GP Katie to introduce me with
the zone.
After a week of that, the unit rotated north, not
for three
months (usual tour), but for five months because
the replacement
unit wasn't ready to come north yet. That winter,
like all in
Korea, was bitter - temps dropped to -38 degrees
one night,
chill factor -85 degrees, exposure time measured
in seconds, not
minutes. Warm-up bunkers few and far between,
enough firewood
for three hours a night if you were lucky, but we
did have the
Playboy Bunker - Position #120 - with the inside
walls covered
with Playboy Magazine centerfolds for years gone
by!! Quite a
bunker that was!! Because we were short-handed we
worked 22
hours on with two hours of sleep for every 24 hour
period. There
were no days or nights, just one continuous march
of time toward
rotation South! We were suppose to have one day
off for every
fourteen days on, but I had one day off for the
entire 5 months
we were on the zone, and that was because the
first sergeant put
me on sick call for 24 hours. GP Katie duty ran
from 3 to 5 days
to throw the NK off a regular change of duty plan,
and it seemed
to work. They didn't know when to ambush the
eplacement/resupply
vehicles. Water for GP Katie was either brought in
by truck or
mostly brought up the hill from the spring or
creek at the
bottom of the hill. It was dangerous to do, and
the NK snipers
watched for us every time. Many times we went down
at night if a
patrol was not in the area. GP Katie had a
radar/photo recon
bunker, but we seldom saw the operators. They were
like ghosts
to us. We totally rebuilt the trench system and
bunkers there
that summer (the older cloth sandbags had rotted
and we used the
new plastic version). Patrols usually lasted 24 to
36 hours, and
gave us a chance to rest during one on/one off
periods. After
dark no one was off.
The UI's were everywhere trying to penetrate the
fence and/or
ambush us. The NK's sent down Hunter/Killer 5 man
units, would
strike fast (one to two minutes) then take off
across the MDL.
More than once we could have struck back, but were
not allowed
to fire over the MDL, even if they were still
shooting at us,
which they often did. They even put American flags
up at their
positions across the MDL, trying to make us think
they were
American positions. Caught us once...after that we
were aware of
that trick. We paid them back later. Trips North
(of the MDL)
were by volunteers only, and lasted up to 7 days.
Can't talk
about them here. Uncle Sam is still watching us.
Fence duty was
boring and spooky all at the same time. If we had
fence duty, we
usually hit the positions by 4 PM and were picked
up by 9 AM.
Few of us slept, but the KATUSA's did often. Poor
rich boys from
wealthy families that didn't want their boys going
to Nam!!!
Their NCO's must have come from the regular army
though, because
they were monsters to the KATUSA troops. Our
company covers
positions from #113 thru 138 I believe, and I
worked them all.
After making E5 at Thanksgiving, I was taken off
of patrol/GP
Katie duty (which I had done for 4 solid months)
and put on the
fence. I'd be responsible for 4 to 6 positions
each night, and
was never in one position very long. Kept moving
constantly
keeping everyone awake and alert. The cooks would
send up hot
coffee and hot potato soup on the really cold
nights (below 10
degrees), but by the time it reached us and we got
back in our
holes, it would be frozen solid. So if we heard
something out in
front of the fence, we'd throw the soup first, and
then the hand
grenade second! Surprise more than one UI with
that trick. They
would jump and run when the soup hit near them,
then they got
the real surprise. Usually didn't make it home to
tell their
buddies the trick either. The patrol would sweep
in and block
any retreat if they were still alive. US 1 NK 0.
Paybacks for
the Easter ambush of the guards going to Panmunjom
and the train
wreck shootings. They took some of our guys out
too, but we
aren't allowed to talk about that either.
Accidental discharge
of a weapon or training accident was the cover
words they used.
Jan 7, 1969 we rotated south with what was left of
us. Had a few
go psyco while up north, a few who just ended it,
a few who
overdosed on whatever, some left early with combat
fatigue, some
got to rotate home (very few), some did the trip
home in a body
bag. But we rotated south to South Camp Custer,
and the next
three months it was river duty, bridge duty on
Freedom Bridge,
and training. Like we needed more training!!! We
needed rest,
but never got much. I spent half of my 30 day
leave after Korea
sleeping. Oh, it was so good. For five months I
could count on
one hand how many times I slept between two sheets
in a bed.
Mostly slept on the concrete floor in a sleeping
bag with a
pistol (black market 45 cal.) in my hand with a
round in the
chamber.
But we did what we were told to do and also worked
on the MBP's,
main battle positions, when we had nothing else to
do.
Korea changed me forever, for the better I hope.
Wouldn't want
to do it again, but won't trade the tour for all
the gold in the
world. I learned a lot about myself and other
people over there,
including the South Koreans. They have to live
with the NK's
every day, not just for 13 months of hell.
Someday, that will
change, and those NK's will have some gun barrels
put down their
throats just like they did to our Navy guys on the
Pueblo. Only
our guns will be loaded when we pull the triggers!
Until then I
wish the South Koreans well. Their time to go
North is coming.

Comments: Equality with respect to Veteran dioxin exposure presumption
for all Veterans
Hi,
Currently only veterans of the Vietnam Conflict are afforded
this in a limited presumption, Boots on GroundĀ legislation, if
they were in the Republic of Vietnam (Served in the Republic of
Vietnam between 1/9/62 and 5/7/75) per the Department of
Veterans Affairs. In fact any current end date for any location
would be invalid as Dioxins stay active for much longer than
the time since the 1962 admitted RVN Agent Orange / Dioxin
start date, current end date is the end date for RVN service,
per the DVA. I was in an exposed unit, one of many and in many
countries, not recognized by the DVA.
That's why I created a petition to The United States House of
Representatives, The United States Senate, and President Barack
Obama.
We the undersigned petition the US Senate, US Congress and the
President of the United States to enact legislation that makes
ALL veterans have equal presumption of exposure to Dioxins
while in the service of the United States at any location or
unit. We feel that ALL veterans MUST be treated equally with
respect to Dioxin exposure by the US government and Department
of Veterans Affairs.
NOTE: Veterans must also still prove they have a recognized
condition, that maybe caused by Dioxin exposure, during or
after service to get DVA benefits.
Any one 18 can sign.
If effected vet make sure you add your statement in comment

my unit apparantly is not on a VA list of authorized units, I
need Buddy Statements that prove that the Battalion conducted
field missions in/and near the DMZ. Info about our MSA using
defolients to clear the area between fences and outside the
gates would also help. Any assistance is appreciated.

Comments: If you are missing any part of your Korea records
or if you
were in Korea and need records to get your VA
disability claim
approved you are in luck. There is an oversight
committee
looking into the issue of missing records. Rob
McQuade is my
contact who is doing the looking. you can get a
hold of him at
877-727-4894 and ask for the House Veterans
Affairs Committee.
When they answer ask for Rob. He needs to
understand how
serious this issue is with Korea vets and you are
the ones who
can make a difference.

NOTE: Veterans must also still prove they have a recognized
condition that maybe caused by Dioxin exposure during or after
service to get DVA benefits.
Currently only veterans of the Vietnam Conflict are afforded
this in a limited presumption, Boots on Ground legislation,
if they were in the Republic of Vietnam (Served in the Republic
of Vietnam between 1/9/62 and 5/7/75) per the Department of
Veterans Affairs. In fact any current end date for any location
would be invalid as Dioxins stay active for much longer than
the time since the 1962 admitted RVN Agent Orange / Dioxin
start date, current end date is the end date for RVN service,
per the DVA.

Comments: Anyone out there from 2/23, I was a medic with c co. When we had a 19 yr. old
who tried to pry a m-79 round apart and blew himself apart on the DMZ, while on
patrol I think he was from Alabama, my 1st big trauma, he survived. Later we
were ambushed while on patrol, a Sargent from another patrol was wounded next
to us and some general got out there. I can't recall the camp we were at, nor the
outpost we manned. 1968 god a million years ago for a 19 year old from Iowa, I
grew up fast for a hayseed from Iowa. I can remember faces like yesterday, but
names escape me. Like most of us I just wanted to get the hell out of Korea.
Contact me if any of you remember this.

Keywords: Looking for people i served with? I was in Korea from April 1968
to July 1969. I extended 2 months. I was still in Korea in the
DMZ pulling patrols when Capt. Butcher,s crew from the Pueblo
were released. I was in South Camp Custer part of time. We used
to pull 4 months along the DMZ and then go south for 4 months of
training. I was also an Imjin Scout. When I first got to my unit
in 1968, Out company was down to about 80 soldiers. I believed I
pulled 45 days in a row on patrols in the DMZ with no days off.
Anyone remember those days?

He referenced - in passing - the Flight Ops out of Atsugi that were designed to draw out N. Korean MiGs following the attack on PR-21; April 15, 1969.
He is the only person who was involved in those flights other than myself that I now know of.
