Subject: 2ND MP APPROVED FOR AGENT ORANGE EXPOSURE

Will Pleasants JR. wrote on June 17, 2011

City and State: NC

Unit: 2ND MP COMPANY 67-68

Service or Relationship: Army Veteran

Comments: Comments: The Department of Veteran Affairs, C and P Service, has determined that the 2nd Military Police Company of the 2nd Infantry Division should be added to the list of units that operated at or near the Korean demilitarized zone (DMZ) between April 1968 and July 1969. DoD has acknowledged that tactical herbicides, such as Agent Orange, were used along the DMZ during that time frame. Although DoD information served to establish the initial list, research conducted by JSRRC (Army and Joint Services Records Research Center) and C and P Service continues to periodically add units to the list. M21-1MR contains the list and is updated as units are added. A proposed regulation has been published in the Federal Register that would create a presumption of tactical herbicide exposure for Veterans who served in one of these units during the time frame of herbicide use.

The 2nd Military Police Company of the 2nd Infantry Division should be added to the list because an official history of that unit, dated February 10, 1969, shows that the unit, "Maintained control of traffic and Korean Nationals crossing Freedom and Libby Bridges." A map of the Korean DMZ shows that Freedom Bridge is approximately one mile from the DMZ. This places the unit near the DMZ and indicates that its members likely responded to incidents occurring even closer to the DMZ.

Comments: This is the answer to David Dennis about CO C 2/23 that went thru Hell. I arrived in the DMZ in May of 65 and was assigned to Co C 1/8 Calvery. First Calvery Div. My first day I discoverd the hidden war. I shipped over on a troop carrier that also was transporting the First Marine Div going to Viet Nam. The Commies was pushing on two fronts. Openly in VietNam and Hit and Run warfare in the Korean DMZ.At that time I found out that we were getting hazadous duty pay. Two Months later we were told that that we were going to change Divisions. From 1st Calv to 2nd Inf. Div, but we was going to stay on the DmZ, and just let the new Air Calv in Ft. Benning wear the 1st Calv. patch in VietNam. They made a movie about the First Air Calv, but they never told where the First Calv. came from. I was told that the higher ups wanted to let the First Calv.go to Viet Nam to win the Colors back that they lost in the open conflict in the early 50's. So now I am in Co C 2/23 2nd ID. My first day that I got to C company we had to race out to a firefight with one North Korean wounded and captured, and we trailed blood to the center tape. My last day. 11 Months and 29 days later on my way back to Florida crossing Freedom Bridge I heard the POL dump at Co A explode. The defector Charles Jenkins was from C 1/8 Calv. To sum it up. The guys that were there know this saying."I hope that I go to Heaven because I've spent my time in Hell".

Comments: According to the veteran administration nothing happened in Korea during the dates noted along the DMZ. Not one day of combat nor did anyone see combat.

Denied some VA benefits because of it. I want to know why would anyone be less of a veteran just because they were state side or didn't see combat. You serve your country; they tell you where you are going to be stationed or deployed, so why would you be penalized from benefits?

Why is this time in Korea not counted as combat, you were still patrolling the DMZ, there was still a threat; otherwise why would you be there?

I am trying to gain some understanding as to why my father who was proud to serve his country, saw somethings patrolling the DMZ he would like to forget, not deserving of all the benefits that a veteran is and should be entitled to.

If I am overstepping here, I will apologize. But my dad is my hero and he is going through a tough time right now. He just lost my mom last Sept, they were together since they were 15 yrs. old. He is ill and in need of some assistance in the future. Yet, he is being denied. If anyone can help me to understand this, I would appreciate. Lastly, I would like to thank all of the individuals who have and continue to serve our country, it takes a special person to be able to put others before him or herself. God Bless You All!!

Thank you.

Subject: THE WORST DETAIL

Service or Relationship: Army Veteran

Comments: It was the first week of June, 1968 and the 2/23rd Infantry had recently started its southern rotation after a long four months on the DMZ. To our surprise the first platoon of Company A was immediately assigned to Tent City to guard Freedom Bridge for two weeks. After spending our first night on position guarding the bridge, we returned to a hearty breakfast of fresh eggs, bacon and toast. Then Troy Banks, Rick Rohtan, I and another laid our selves down to enjoy our after breakfast smoke and the hot morning sun.

That soon came to an end when a young buck sergeant came over to us and said he had a job for us four men to do and to just follow him. We arose to our feet and followed him as he led us to our destination, the latrines. Then he broke the news to us and said our detail was to pull the half drums full of human feces out and drag them some 50 meters off to the side and pour diesel fuel into the drums and lit them up and let them burn. We looked at each other and just shook our heads and dcided to split up into two man teams.

With those orders we maneuvered behind the latrines and lifted the hinged rear access doors and began pulling the half drums out. The stench coming out of the drums was unbearable. As we struggled draggging the drums filled with human feces towards the burn location we started gagging from the smell but continued until I finally said, "I have had enough of this shit and I am going to get my gas mask". Immediately I made a quick dash towards the tent with three men in hot pursuit. Still gasping for fresh air we made it to our duffel bags and retrieved our gas masks. With our gas masks on we came out of the tent and headed towards the drums while the rest of the platoon had their fun with their taunts and laughter from seeing us with our gas masks on.

Once we reached the drums, we poured diesel fuel into the drums and tossed lit newspaper into each drum. Soon the flames shot up high in the sky followed by a blanket of black smoke that permeated the whole area with the stench and odor of burning diesel fuel, human feces and urine. The rest of the platoon was no longer laughing but running to distance themselves upwind. Now if you thought Kitchen Police or cleaning out a grease trap was bad, that was nothing compared to being assigned to a shit burning detail. Definitely, the worst detail in the Army. Any and all Comments Welcomed, Mario Pacella 2/23rd Infantry

Remember spending much of the time in the field on alerts, and was there during the cuban missile crisis. Also served on the ADM team for a couple of months, which i liked doing.

Our company built roads and bridges, many of which were ox-cart paths when we arrived there.
