Comments: I was diagnosed with a bone marrow desies about 15 years ago. I could not use the VA hospital because I made to much money. I was told to get a stem cell transplant. Instead I took powerful medicine until June 2013 when the medication no longer worked and I had to get a stem cell transplant. In Nov. 2010 I filed a claim. In May 2013 it was denied, only took 2 & 1/2 years to say not associated with military service. The 2nd. Inf. Division Chemical Company was 50 yards above me at Camp Howze in 1968. They sprayed Camp Howze and many others also. Look up letters from Steve Witter. They emptied there tanks on roads, in streams and at the top of camp Howze. My doctors say it wasn't so much agent orange but benzene from diesel oil it was mixed with and of course to heat our hooches that more likely than not caused my disease. I find it very interesting that the 2nd. Inf. Div. Chemical Company, the ones that sprayed much of Agent Orange mixed with diesel are NOT on the presumptive unit list!! WTF. I'm now appealing.
Grow a beard if your fighting the VA. Let everyone know how many of us there are!

We worked from Seoul to the 38th including the tidal flats and my unit was a night unit. There was another unit just like mine who worked during the daytime. little fuzzy on some things. lots of memories of those days. some rough but many good
ones, in retrospect. i was 17 years old and felt very proud and honored to be serving
on freedoms frontier, as they called it. you know how gung ho youngsters can be,
especially army brats. : ). it would be a real treat to hear from any of the guys i
served with or, actually, just anyone who was there. i only accidently, about a week
ago, stumbled on to. spc4 julio martinez's Blue Lancer Valley web site and have been
chogeying hills, slogging through rice paddies and high stepping through deep snow,
manning OPs and running MDL patrols in the DMZ as well as MDP guard, and MLR patrol
and pulling regular guard duty around BLV, range 1 echo, rear gate and easy block and
seemingly thousands of other things in my memory ever since. i highly recommend his
web site to any one who served at BLV, or, anywhere in the frozen chosun. as, his
web site led me to others which eventually led me to this one. thanks to the founders
of this site for all the hard work putting it together. it is a great site and much
appreciated, i'm sure, by all veterans of the korean experience

Comments: Received denial for my claim on 30 Jan. In the presumptive time, presumptive unit, presumptive everything, denied because I had only five days of medical records. I spent fourteen months in Korea did my time riding the wire, night patrols the whole nine yards, and was denied because there are no records. I thought I had a very solid claim, wrong. I had buddy statements, solid proof of service in their presumptive time, DD214, diagnosis of my condition for seven years, statements from my wife, but because I only had a five consecutive days of medical records, all of which were dental charts, not medical records, I was denied.
The verbage that the VA uses, is completely different from present day diagnosis. They have all the bases covered. But I refuse to go away, and I will appeal, appeal, and appeal until I die. Boots on the ground in NAM, approved, service on The DMZ, we all have a very tough road to hoe. Good Luck Bro's.

Funny cause I have a prior vet same scenario who qualified but this guy is denied, go figure the VA. Where can I find the papers showing he was receiving combat pay for DMZ duty, and that can place him there? His 201 file did not have any such orders. Does any one have any recollection of a fratricide killing involving a soldier named Sholak, or a variation of that last name? VA claims that the DMZ was NOT a hostile area in Korea. I need help countering all these VA allegations. Awards are Korea Defense Service Medal Soooooooooooo I need some help fellows. Thanks

Buring the many different runs I can attest to the fact that all of the sites had one thing in common. no trees, grass, or bushes on the firing and radar sites. i fact i have pictures tacken a c batery showing this lack of said items.

while many of my rips to osan we made with a 715 i had to make a few trip ith a q21/2 truck so i was direcked to use the truck entrance. as you entered the gate to the right side as you went in was in fact the mixing plant foe the agent orange plant that was used to spray the agent orange.

I have since talked with air force personel who were stationed a osan afb who were given agen orange compensation. I further beleive that not only 7/5 but all 38th bde units were subject to multiple sprayings of agent orange.

I have had at least 2 of the desieses associated with agent orange and have had been denied my claim.
after reading some of the other articles on this web site I went back into my old photo albums and found some of those old photos showing c battery and one with me that i hope will settle the question. if it does I will make them alalible to all.

Comments: I am just adding a little of my Army history on this site. I was assigned to Aco. the
first part of Feb. 1963 after almost 4 weeks at sea on the General Danial S. Sultan
then landed at Inchon. It was so cold that our breath would freeze and fall to the
ground as we breathed. Naw Just kidding, but it was cold. Anyway I was the gunner on
A-34 for Plt. Sgt Overshaun from the day I signed in until about May. It was about
then that our company was to be reassigned to the 1st CAV Div. on the DMZ and to be
the only tank company on the DMZ at that time. When we left Camp Beavers, the 40th
became the 1/73 armor and it went from 5 line companys to just 3. Our new designation
was Aco, 2/15th Armor and for about 2 months I was the 1sg. jeep driver then I
persuaded him to put me back on a tank. He did and I was the driver of A-22 until my
new T.C. was put in charge of the mess hall, at that time I was a PFC but we were
short on NCOs so i was the new TC for A-22 until I left in mid Jan. 1964. When I got
to Korea I was 17 1/2 years old, but I felt like I was more like 24 when I left the
company. I don't regret any of my 3 tours in Korea, 1973-74, 1976-77, and if I had it
to do again I would. I am now 68 and my health isn't like it should be or was, and I
just wanted to put this up hoping someone will read this and know that my entire 24
1/4 years in the army was either on tanks or a first sergeant of a tank company. That
was what I wanted from the age of 6 and with Gods help and blessings, I completed my
life long dream. May God bless all my fellow soldiers I served with and the ones that
didn't get to come home. I love the Army and being a TANKER is the greatest thing
that could ever happen to a young man.

Keywords: My first platoon in Korea I was given the nick name, GRAVELS because of my last name,
PITTS. Later when I was a platoon sergeant I was known as POP because I was usually
either the oldest or most experienced tanker in the platoon. Then when I became First
Sergeant, I was known as TOP, FIRST SOLDIER and many other names I won't post here.
Each of my tours to Korea had an incident or two where some troops were killed or
wounded by the north koreans but the news only made it back to the states in 76 when
Operation PAUL BUNYON took place. I had so many good friends through out all of those
years I can't remember all. First tour there was Pfc Cook, Pfc Kingrey, SFC Wilson,
SSG Ware, SSG Jackson, SP/5 John Battle, SFC Young, 1SG Godwin, CAPT. Lacy M.
Jackson, 1SG Curtis, SFC Mathews. Second tour C Troop 4/7 CAV at Camp Rice later
renamed Camp Garry Owen, was, SSG Ted Henson, SSG Ed Woldgang, SFC Jack Miller, SSG
Stanley Mack, my driver Pfc, John Leontif. My third tour, C co. 1/72 Armor Camp Casey
Plt Ldr. 2nd LT Des Longchamps Jr., SFC West, SSG. Ray Sturdivant, a true friend and
brother, SSG Bill Wolfe. My mind just can't remember all when I want to. But my

Comments: I left Camp Jeb Stewart the end of November headed to Vietnam with Theo Thomas & Stanley Meitz. The 3 of us volunteered together, but never saw each other again. Love to hear from you guys. Theo was a really good friend from Houston. I know they both made it, because they aren`t on wall. Also remember Hunt from Virginia, Rafferty from North Dakota and a kid named Gideon. Love to hear from any of you guys.

Comments: Lt. Staudt, your story creates a great image of 1962-63 Korea. I was there at the DMZ ten years after you, 1972-73. I was a SGT. E-5 in the medical platoon of a 105mm artillery battalion. I know we enlisted folks did crazy stuff, but officers too? I guess I was just a naive 19-year-old then. Our stories could fill volumes of books.

Comments: It's been 51 years since I first walked on Mae Bong's summit as a young 2nd Lt. and was stunned by the view down a long valley into North Korea. The site was newly constructed so it has no perimeter wire, no machine gun nests, no handrails nor heated outhouses. My first thought was "What am I doing here?"

It was only after I read our manual on "Terms of Engagement" that I understood why we were there. Our orders prohibited us from firing at an enemy aircraft unless we actually saw open bombay doors and they were headed towards us. We were South Korea's tripwire.

I would love to hear from any of Mae Bong survivors.

Some of my memories include: The long ride on dirt roads to Chunchong and the
building of the dam

The women along side the road with babies on their
backs making gravel from large rocks with
their hammers as part of the road paving
project

The 13 mile trip to the top of Mae Bong

Having to use the handbrake on the jeeps after losing
the footbrake due to fording the creeks on
the trip down from the TAC site

Allowing the local whores to use the showers in the BOQ
in the wintertime

The frozen black potatoes

The horrible reconstituted milk served in aluminum
pitchers.

The 30 days it never got above - 30 degrees

The 30 days of continuous downpour and the mud.

Eating C rations from WW 2 when our supply trucks
couldn't run due to flooded rivers/

The day our supply run truck was overturned in the river
drowning everyone including some civilians.

The locals stealing our como wire on a regular basis

The locals stealing components from our radars and us
having to buy them back in Chunchon so we
could back on line.

After a thief was killed we were issued shot guns and
when another thief was wounded we were
issued one shell and ordered to keep it in
a fooed top pocket.

Our guard dogs bloody footprints in the snow around
Mae Bongs perimeter

Teaching Lt. Heward how to play chess

Building the concrete patio behind the BOQ with
Lt. Hatcher.

Drinking pitchers of martinis after duty in the BOQ

Our CWO trying to screw a whore on the bar in
the BOQ until our Captain stopped them.

The civilian who was in charge of maintaining our
roads and water supply locked a whore
in his room for a week.

My short timers calendar

My first glass of real milk upon my return home.
