Comments: Hello,
I hope someone can help us.
My dad served in Korea on the DMZ at Camp Casey. He says it was also sometimes called Happy Valley and Happy Dragon. He served 1964-1967 in the US Army. He served 13 months at Camp Casey in 1964, 1965, maybe a small part of 1966.
He remembers being told, this is weed killer, spray it. It being in large barrels with an orange and white stripe. He would pump it into a backpack and spray it, and sometimes spray it from a truck. There were no aerial spraying. He said it killed everything and when the rainy season came, there was no vegetation to hold back the water. He worked with the ROK and the KOTUSA.
He has many symptoms of AO, but the VA is denying he used AO. That they didn't use it until 1968, but I have found recently declassified papers that it was being tested as far back at 1963. He has also been told that his military records were destroyed in the St Louis MO fire in 1973, but the governments own website states it was records of people that were discharged years before him. He is getting the run around and I am angry about it. If he is there are many, many more.
AO symptoms are showing up in his offspring, my sister and I, and in our children. These men served their time for their country. Now he is being asked...why did you wait so long? He didn't. He started having skin issues right upon discharge. Even went through a panel of doctors, 21 sets came in to see him, so more than 21 doctors, and not one could agree what was wrong with him.
Can anyone from that time frame, or prior, that has any memory, or knowledge, of Agent Orange, or any other toxic weedkillers please get with us? Anything can help. He has worked his whole life, and just wants to VA to recognize that he has health problems from his Army service. My name is Michelle Varney, I am his oldest daughter. I can be contacted via email at trafficfina@gmail.com My sister is Evelyn Shaw. Her email is ecvshaw@yahoo.com My father is Verlin Varney. His email is vvarney@columbus.rr.com
We will be happy to share with you in return any information we find to help you as well.
We thank you in advance.

Comments: It was the first week of January 1969 and we had just returned from a bitter cold night on position along the barrier fence on the DMZ, when our platoon sargeant, SFC O'Neal Co. A 2/23 Infantry 1st platoon walked into the hooch and said I have an announcement to make with paper in hand. He stated "You are now all eligible to receive the Combat Infantry Badge". Everybody responded with a big YAH. Then SFC O'Neal said but nobody is going to receive one. The men responded with a Why Not. SFC O'Neal responded, because in order for you to receive the CIB, you basically have to get killed and that is not going to happen to any member of my platoon. You had to admire a man like that. He knew the critera at the time was designed so nobody could receive the CIB. Rightfully, the critera has been changed retroactively to give credit where credit is due. Best Regards Mario Pacella

Comments: It was the summer of 1968 and we the 2/23 infantry had just recently rotated south of the Imjin river. Our sister unit, the 3/23 infantry had replaced us on the DMZ. At the same time the North Korean's hostile activities continued to rise. With the increase in hostility, Intelligence had reports of hidden weapons cache and sightings of infiltrators along a known infiltration route. We the 2/23 were ordered into the area on a 5 day sweep. On the third day of operations after humping hill after hill with the temperature reaching a high of 112 degrees that afternoon we came upon a little clearing with a ravine and a number of hills connected by a ridge line in front of us. Our platoon sargeant,SSGT. Landers, a Nam Vet and good tactician decided to split the platoon into two groups. He would take the 1st and 2nd squad and follow the ravine north around the hills and set up an ambush, while the 3rd squad led by sgt. Henry and the 4th squad led by myself would climb up the hill in front of us, single file formation and follow the ridge line north in the hope that the infiltrators would see us and run into SSGT. Landers' trap. Sgt. Henry and I agreed he would lead and I would walk rearguard. The patrol strarted up the hill, but when I reached the base of the hill I stopped, took my canteen of water out and took a sip and it was like drinking hot water.(I thought to myself our guys in Nam deal with this heat every day) As I was putting my canteen away, by chance I looked down to the ground and I saw through some scrub vegatation a little puddle of water, about 4 inches in diameter. I knelt down and moved the vegatation aside and there to my amazement was a natural spring with 4 to 5 air bubbles arising, and not more than 18 inches in diameter and 6 inches deep in the center.
I cupped my hands and took a drink and the water was ice cold. It felt like I had found water in the desert since there were no trees or shade in sight. I
filled my canteen up and stood up and leaned my head back to take another sip when I saw that sgt. Henry reached the peak of the hill, but about half way up the hill ,150 feet from me I saw a man collaspe to the ground but I heard no shots fired.
Immediately, I ran up the hill to see what had happen and when I arrived there on the ground was PFC Marvin Williams a member of my squad and four men standing around him. Marvin was having convulisons that were so servere, one could not image. You could see the whites of his eyes wide open and he was foaming at the mouth. I thought to myself Oh My God, he is going to die any momemt.
Instantively, I told the 4 men standing there to empty their canteens of water over his body while I took my canteen of ice cold water that only minutes earlier I had filled from the spring and poured it over his head and face. Suddenly, the convulsions stopped but Marvin was still unconscious, so I told everybody to follow me down the hill to the spring. There we filled our canteens with that cold spring water and we ran back up to Marvin and emptied them all over his body, by that time everybody in the patrol was involved and it turned into like a bucket brigade, everybody passing up canteens of water.
Finally, Marvin regained consciousness but he was still incoherant. So sgt. Henry, myself and two other men picked Marvin up and carried him down to the base of the hill and sat him in the spring and repeatedly splashed water all over his body. All this happened in less than 10 minutes. I then radioed for a med evac but it took them 45 minutes to reach us cause we were so far out in the field. Afterwards, I realize that Marvin had suffered from Sun Stroke and I remembered from my first aid training you do not have much time when treating sun stroke if you are to save one's life.
To this day I do not know, was it a mere chance of a glance or was it some Higher Power that guided me to find that hidden spring. Or maybe that day Marvin Williams Guarding Angel was certainly watching over him.
A few days later we returned to camp and I walked into the hooch and saw Marvin in bed. I went up to him and asked him how he was doing and with a gentle smiile he nodded and said three days bed rest. I said good. I never told Marvin what had happened to him on that hot summer day on some unknown hill and how close he came to dying if it wasn't for a little spring. I was in Korea another 11 months and I never found another spring.
Despite the many hardships I may of endured and being in harms way myself a number of times, I can say that my 15 months in Korea was well worth it if my being there help save one man's life. I hope Marvin Williams has lived a good life and is enjoying the sunset years of his life. I would like to thank all the members of that patrol that came together when it mattered most.
This story has been on my mind for the past 42 years. I needed to share it with my fellow veterans. I apoligize for its length but thats the only way I know how to tell it. Any and all comments welcomed.
Best Regards, Mario Pacella

Comments: there was an incident on oct.18,1969 which devastated my world. my brother jim grissinger was killed.
he and 3 other soldiers were ambushed by north koreans. there was some controversy which i never understood until about a year and a half ago.
at the time and mostly since then all i knew was that my beloved brother was dead and i would never see him again.
i have learned they were killed because there was no convoy sent with them to the dmz. to my understanding there would always be a convoy sent when going to or from the dmz. jim was blamed for leaving without the convoy.
this decision must have come from some rank above him. he wrote home often and in one of his last letters he mentioned they knew of infiltrators from the north. jim was not a careless man.
he would not have risked others lives to go to the dmz without a convoy, yet the army laid the blame on him. this all happened not long after the pueblo incident and this is what i think......the u.s. government was embarrassed, humiliated, because they had to apologize in order to get the north koreans to release our men after the pueblo was captured in north korean waters.

I served with Co A 2nd battalion 23rd brigade 2nd divison 1st platoon from March68 to June 69 on the DMZ in Korea. I believe it was the 13th of April 1968 early in the afternoon when we learned that a patrol was pinned down by North Koreans at the base of the hill that GP Gladys was located on. My platoon sargent was able to round up about 16 of us and we were going to get that patol out. We got our weapons and ammo and headed out to the GP.Once there we reenforced the trenches and we could see that the patrol was about 100 feet from the white tape.I am standing in the trench looking into North Korea when all of a sudden 4 to 5 rounds hit right in front of me,kicking up so much dirt and stones hitting me and Rick Rohtan in the face.Rick yelled out I am hit as we ducked down into the trench.Boy did those stones realy sting.I told Rick you are ok no blood we got hit by the stones. Immediately the LT made his way down to us and asked me if I knew how to fire a M60,I said yes and I followed him to the gu enplacement. He pointed out the general area the North Koreans were postioned and told me to fire the M60 upon his order to fire. Apparently,he had to get permisson from Dividon in order to fire into North Korea. In the meantime I sighted the M60 on the target area but needed to stand on a few sand bags to do so and from waist up was exposed. For sure I new I was going to die once I strarting firing.Well in the meantime the pinned patrol was able to get away. And once Divison learned that the patrol was safe,we were ordered to disengage and return to camp.Misson Accomplished. Years later I learned that when those stones hit me in the face, they reputured a sinus tract.Better that than being killed. Would like to hear from others who were my unit

Comments: The Army left out some details that happen on that truck ambush on Oct.18,1969 were 4 of my friends were killed. They also left out about agent orange being sprayed in those area's. They also had a no comment order on action along the DMZ.

Comments: I was in Korea fron Jan 1969 until Apr. 1970. The tow camps I remember is Camp Casey and Camp Matta up on the DMZ. It was so cold doing guard duty up on the DMZ at the fence seperating the two. Fox holes filled with water and it raining. We moved to a lot of different camps over the course of 15 months.

I am an artist, currently working on producing military art. Before I left Korea in Dec., I lost about 30 rolls of film...virtually all of the pictures taken during my deployment.
I am looking for anyone that can share their pictures with me as reference material and subject matter for my military art 'series'.
Eternally grateful for any pics.
