Hello Don - Thanks for writing. I left Korea in mid-December of 1969. Since you arrived just over 3 months later then 1LT Buchanan was probably still CO and I think 1SGT Carl Ivey was still Top then - is that right. I see you were at Camp Ethan Allen. Had the Bridge at the Spoonbill been put back in yet? We built three timber tresel bridges in the villages near the camp, including one that crossed over the stream about 1/2 mile south of the camp - it led from the small village there over to the hill that was that area's graveyard (It had like about 100 mounds there where they buried their local people).
I don't remember a lot of the guys there - other than some of the officers - there was 2LT Jeff Farver, 2LT. Stuart Kline, and another 2LT who was Italian but I don't recall his name.
Since you got there only a short time after I left, you may have known Sp4 Brian Mallory too. Do you have any photos of you and other members of E Co or any 2nd Engineers working along the River, or along the fence or up in the zone? We need to get some pictures of 2nd Engineer Equipment (AVLBs, Bridge Trucks, Dozers, loaders, lowboys or even jeeps and stuff in those areas with their unit id numbers showing.
Before I left I had prepared plans and materials lists for 32 new bridges to be built both above and below the River - most were replacements for bridges built at the end of the 1st Korean War. I know the Zone was still a hot spot after I left and if you worked around the Spoonbill Bridge or on the Patrol Boats and any up along the fence or guard posts, you were exposed to areas treated with Agent Orange. Have you had any health issues since then? Diabetes, heart trouble, cancers? Please let me know. Even though you were there after us, E Company's Mission and work duties could not have changed that much in just 3 1/2 months, so if you could prepare a letter outlining the work you and E Company did during your tour on the river, fence line, the minefields or in the Zone and the Guard Posts, and sign it and swear it to be true to the best of your knowledge and recollection, that letter could go a long ways toward helping a bunch of your brothers who are in health trouble now.
I promised all 285 men under my command in E Company that as long as they did their jobs and followed our orders and directions that I would back them and stand up for them through anything. Well, even though I am no longer on active duty (I am still in the inactive standby reserves) and no longer their CO, I will not let them down now. As it stands now, I am the Senior (former) Officer of 9 other guys from the Battalion and the widow and son of another. They did their jobs for me and the other officers and NCO of the Battalion then so I will not quit until I see they are getting the care and treatment the deserved. The only thing that will stop my battle for them (us) is for the VA to take responsibility for their (our) care and treatment and compensation or if I die.

Comments: If you worked at any of the 2d Inf Div. Guard Posts or Out Posts, or along the fence in the Guard Towers, or went on patrols into the Zone from the Fence, you were in areas directly sprayed with AO.
Please let me know where you were and what you did. Also, if you had contact with any Engineer Units or personnel in those areas, you can help us. Also - go to this site and read all of this document - it is long, but factual and worth the read - it was published before DOD and DOA confirmed use of AO in Korea and outlines where, who and when AO was used.

Copy and paste that and read it ALL. It may be the best piece of evidence for those with AO related issues. What health issues are you facing? What has VA said, if anything about your conditions?

Very few people regardless of the branch of service have served within my MOS and if they did it was mainly during WWII or the Cold War. Our clandestine nickname we are called 'greyhead's' at Langley and at the Pentagon.
I was in an isolated area as well as several areas at several bases on the pennisula some very close to the DMZ while 6314 Support Wing underneath the 314 Air Division. AFHRA has general histories on the 314 Air Division but no histories the 6314 support wing available for 1969-70. Notwithstanding, I can tell you we dealt with DET 4500, 1005 Special Investigations Group - OSI; (6314 support wing exercised special courtmartial status over AF personnel civilian or uniform attached to ROKAF, **6314 support wing worked for the O/L Director of Materiel- aka AFNSW-1 or AFTAC-1 aka Atomic Energy Commission with DAF-AIA elements**, O/L 6146 Air Force Advisory Group (AIA-AFSOC) to ROKAF, **Elements of ROKAF-33rd Pararescue Group//111th fighter Squadron (AFSOC)**; **DET, 6314 Munitions Maintenance**; 65th ordinance HAWK; 6044th USAF Dispensary, DET 2, 39th Air Division; Battery B, 6th Missile Battalion, 44th Artillery; DEt 10, 20th Weather Squadron; and the **6314 support wing chose USAF or Army Aviation Company to assist with our special mission unit** as directed by the Commander of the 314 Air Division for **US Ambassador to Korea** and to the all **UN Secy. I have confirmation that used herbcides on the DMZ/Pennisula. **(The herbicides that were used was to kill mosquitos)** I was within an isolated areas at Osan and others bases I was required to operational guide to: Taegu, Kimpo, Pusan and Kunsan Air bases (active regular air force duty military, Executive Branch level (J1,J3) TDY's orders, and Civilian or Uniform DAF/Dept of the Army/Defense Contract Administration Agency section Special Missions Unit assignments)
Here is my question to my brothers and sisters that served during the 2nd Korea War (DMZ-post USS Pueblo incident) I would love to know which US army units within the 2nd and 7th artillery battalions we (6314 Support wing under the 314 air division) worked with? I just can't seem to find which US Army group we worked with. I have confirmation through my research (Defense Finance Accounting Service (special inquires secton) in Denver has been a big help finding 30 year old Executive Branch level TDY records)
I recently have enlisted the help of US Senator Maria Cantwell (WA-D) office and US Congressman Jay Inslee (D-Wa) help which has been a huge help to me. Both of their offices have been extremely help to me of late. I would like to thank them both.
Also we have been using the Disabled American Veterans as a service officer. They have done a decent job but you have to do more work than the your service officer in order to have a prayer let alone a change to be approved for Herbicidical, Agent Orange, Mustard Gas, Purple, or Ionizing Radiation contamination by the VA. I received my first rejection letter after 18 months of research. Notwithstanding, after I wrote a letter to the VA they have re-open my case because i have a great deal of new information and research that for some weird reason did not get evaluated by the VA. There was a mail problem between the Disabled American Veterans and the VA. This is why you must be careful with the DAV, VFW, American Legion, service office and officers. Those who work for DAV, VFW, American Legion etc are great americans but they have too high of a work load and too little pay.

Comments: looking for anyone familiar with the area from the imjum river to the northeast along dmz to almost the sea of Japan. 2 people from this unit have contracted neurolgical problems and type 2 diabetes. Our activities brought us in contact almost daily with the South tape and on occassion to Freedom Village at middle tape, Herbicides were used everywhere along the Z and in it. The Army claims they didn't use agent Orange until 1967 but they did use herbicides. Need names of people in that area that may be afflicted similarly or have knowledge of what chemicals were used

Comments: I spent thirteen months in hell - aka Korea - Cold/Hot/Wet/Dry always to the extreme. Hated the village. good friend Ed Drake (55th MP (CID) Spec 4)
Medics at the clinic were animals; Donut Dollies only talked to officers. Spent most my off duty time in the Library. Good Friend killed while on Front Gate - Army said it was suicide - How he shot himself from outside the gate house when his body and all the blood was on the inside was never explained. Bullet hole in window - glass only inside the gate house - He was close to being out of both Korea and the US Army. May 1969 - June 1970 - The ammo Sgt was a racist pig - the motor pool monkeys were just plain sadistic and Warnock was a bully with a hair trigger temper.
Worked at being a company clerk, supply clerk, ammo humper and focused on when I could go stateside.

Odie and POL Truck was my favorite duty - Everyone thought Odie was dumb - but I knew better after riding with him for just one day. We had great times in that oily truck
Ice storm froze the doors to the hooch and we couldn't get out for morning formation. Sgt used the fire axe on the door to open it.
Newton Figgs was run over by a towed 105 on his way back from the village. Pvt. Green always had drugs in his tie - the MP's would pat him down but never touched his tie he always wore a smile and nothing ever dimmed his spirit until Figgs was run over by that towed 105.
George ran over a papa san with the USO Bus. Never did make it to the musuem we were going to.
First Sgt had this small dog that loved beer. We got the dog so drunk one night that its legs slid out from under neath it and it passed on on the table. First Sgt kept a bottle of Vodka in his desk.
Had a Capt. who was a ranger for our CO for a while. Why they put an Infantry Officer in charge of an Artillery Unit could only happen in I Corp. He attempted to make us into a right proper unit but we were the personification of F-Troop and he left a very frustrated Capt. He did keep me from making Sgt. and with an article 15 took my Spec 4 Oh Well - I came in to the army a PFC and I went out a PFC - only thing is missed was the money.
Speaking of money - the Cook was a loan shark. Borrow 5 on payday you owed him 10, if you didn't pay next month you owed him 20. He also bought ration stamps and sold appliances, cigarettes and fans to the Koreans in the village. I knew a guy in CID and I ratted him out. The new cook was a better cook and the food got better.
those are my memories of Korea - nothing to brag about but we were just a bunch of flakes, nuts, and fruits.
We would have all died in combat from wounds in our backs.

Comments: Camp Page (Nov, 1967 through Dec,1968) was my most memorable assignment and I remember all the great people I served with. The snatching of the USS Pueblo, the 31 Man, North Korean Infiltrator attack on the "Blue House" in Seoul and the North's mass infiltrations (600 of them)into the south kept us all hopping. About three years ago I sat down and wrote a book about Chunchon and Camp page back in 1968. It's finally finished. It's called, "Land of the Morning Calm" and covers a lot of what was going on during that secret little war only a few of us know about. Around June of 08, ask for it at "Barns and Nobel and on Amazon.com.

Comments: Diagnosed recently with Diabetes, was in Korea in Fall of 1969. Attended NCO School at Camp Casey and was later assigned to 40th Engineer Topography Camp Mercer. My job as mailman\courier had me carrying many different items ad going all over Korea. I could have contacted AO at any map depot or at the 547 Eng. Float Bridge unit which shared the compound with the 40th. I now have an appeal in to VA to prove I had contact exposure. If presumption is removed, where do I go from here?

Comments: I arrived in Korea in the Fall of 1969. Went To Camp Casey for NCO School. Was that a known Agent Orange Area? Once assigned to the 40th Engineer Topo. I was assigned the job as unit mailman and courier this job took me to Kimpo and Youngsan daily. I made trips thoughout Korea carrying different parcels from topography and map materials to things I don't know about. I was recently diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus Type ll. Who know of other veterans with like assignments or duties that may have been exposed to AO in 1969?
