Comments: I loved the stakeouts, walking the safety lanes and roving patrols. The humping of 5 gal cans of diesel up Texas was hell on an icy day, but worth the effort
when you got there. The little spring that ran cold
water on the way up Texas was a refreshing rest stop,
then up you went to the O.P.. There were O.P.s 201-
211-209-219-222-223, Froze on them, cant remember the rest, freedom vilage and the mayors daughter, I think we all tried to get a peek at her. memories are dimm now but I remember the buddies that I went on patrol with.--Best of the best!!!
At 19 I became a man in Korea. Came home and got married, 48 years now, started a family, and have 4 children and 4 grand children. I hope to be a great grand father soon. Hay: Ogle, I remember the name but the face is long gone from my memory. You may remember me, I ran the movie projector.

Just out of Single Rotor Turbine Helicopter repair school at Ft. Eustis, a group of us all came down on orders for 2ID, and Larry and I both experienced the wonders and woes of Korea. We were processed at Ascom, and trucked up to E Co. 702nd Maint Bn. at Stanton Army Airfield. Being Helicopter guys didn't prepare us for an Airfield with no huey helicopters, just a few fixed wing beavers and hiller killers. Nor were we really prepared to face "the ville" (Yongjugol). How we survived would take a book and a lot of time to tell. Suffice it to say that our time their was not boring. Yes, we did finally did get our hueys. Comments: Sorry to be so long in posting this. I thought I already had.

Today (6 April 2008) is a day of mixed feelings for me. I received this message this morning -

FROM: Monica Ivey, Daughter of 1SGT Carl Ivey - Received at 10:00 (Eastern Time) this morning -

Carl Ivey's transition

"I'm writing to inform you of the passing of my father, Carl Ivey, this morning. He had a real struggle the past two weeks but was a mighty soldier until the end. I want to thank you for all your kind words and prayers the past few months. You were a real encouragement."

* * *

I realize that many of you never knew 'TOP' Ivey, but for those of us who served with him, we feel sorrow for his passing. However, we can also feel a sense of joy and celebration that 'Top' has now moved to a place where there is no more sorrow, pain or war.

Top has been fighting Cancer and other complications for many months and underwent numerous surgeries at Walter Reed Army Hospital. When I last spoke with him he told me he had retired as an E-8 after 24 years in the Army. He had served at least two tours in Vietnam, and two + tours in Korea, one of which I had the great honor of having him beside me. I have no reservations saying that had Agent Orange not been invented, Top would still be with us today.

Today, I have no doubt that Top is walking along streets of gold and linking arms with family members and his many soldier friends who went before him.

1SGT Carl Ivey (Hatchet Handle Ivey) was a good man, a fine soldier, a loving and caring father and grandfather, and a strong Christian and Friend, and we will miss him. But I am happy that he now serves in the Army of our Maker.

It was my intention to visit Top on my trip to Washington, DC on 15 April. I hope to still visit him while I am there, if I can.

I have included Top's daughter's e-mail address, should you care to send his family a message.

Comments: I had a great call and conversation just after noon today (Wednesday - 5/14) with U.S. Congressman John Doolittle and his assistant Jeff Valuck. He is really hot to go on this and I am going to get one binder in final form for him and send it up there. He said he will get it copied and get it mailed out to all 80 guys (well and some ladies - mostly widows and Vet's Wives) on my list here AND he will get copies made for all members of the House and Senate and get them put in the Representatives and Senators hands.

Based on what he told me on the phone, the best place to be standing in the coming weeks is well behind the fan.

He has already started doing research and is talking with other Congressmen, including Rep. Bob Filner who chairs the House Committee on Veterans Affairs. As you may already know, Congressman Filner held a hearing late last week relating to apparently false statements and information by the Department and Secretary for Veterans Affairs before Congress relating to suicides among vets now returning home from Iraq. At the opening of that hearing Congressman Filner asked Secretary Peake if he should be asking for the resignations of other upper level staff of the VA or if he himself, the Secretary, should be resigning.

Long story short, Congress is not real happy to hear of the problems we (Veterans of the 2nd Korean War) are facing with the VA and Congressman Doolittle has promised to push very hard toward fixing this.

Each of you reading this who served in Korea since 1962 need to get busy writing your Congressmen and Sanators in Washington telling them to contact Congressman Doolittle and join in on this effort.

You can find your Congressional memnbers here:

Congressman Doolittle then plans to schedule a hearing on the issues affecting all Vets who served in Korea since 1962 and work toward getting them ruled Presumptive just as the Vietnam Vets were. He is very interested also in the fact that VA has not been sharing, or at least not paying attention to the Court rulings for other vets when a ruling is handed down. He feels that is a gross injustice on VA's part.

I am going to hook John up with a couple other congressmen who are helping with other vets to get this rolling. I feel good about this and I feel like he will spearhead this for us.

So the Appeals process may soon be mute when all the evidence comes out in Oversight Hearings in both the House and Senate in Washington. Stay tuff, Guys - there is bright light coming into sight in this 40 + year long tunnel.

We will now be "Fireing H.E. Rounds For Effect" on behalf of Vets from the 2nd Korean War! Let's keep the fire hot on VA and let them know we ALL WERE THERE!!

Phil Steward,
Captain (former)
CO, E Company, 2nd Engineer BN

Comments: During 1968 and 1969 the U.S. Government conducted extensive spraying of Agent Orange along the Korean DMZ and in other strategic areas. As a result of exposure to Agent Orange, many veterans, like myself have developed cancer, diabetes, kidney failure and other related diseases.

All Viet Nam veterans are granted a presumption of exposure for all diseases covered in the Agent Orange Registry even if they served on a ship and never set foot on land. However, this same presumption of exposure extended to Viet Nam veterans, is not being extended to 1968 and 1969 Korean veterans. Only select units of the 2nd and 7th Infantry Divisions stationed along the DMZ are granted presumption of exposure. All other Korean veterans are required to prove when, where and how they were exposed to Agent Orange and other toxic chemicals. The only way this short sighted policy is going to change is through Congressional action. I urge all 1968-69 Korean veterans to write their congressmen and request legislation granting presumption of exposure to all 1968-69 Korean veterans. I have writen to my congressmen and senators. Congresman Chris Smith has expressed support for our cause and is taking up the call for change. He needs additional help and support from your congressmen. So, take the time to write.

Comments: Then LTC Phillip D. Grimm was our Bn Co from 68-69 at Camp Kaiser, Korea till he went to 7th ID G-3. Col. Grimm was a leader in every sense of the word. Col. Grimm was a platoon leader in 51-52 in the 17th and then came back to command the first Bn in the 68-69
time period. We have a large write up about Col. Grimm on the 17th Infantry web site.
I attended his services at Arlington Cemetary and finally got to meet his family whom I felt I already knew fromn serving with Col. Grimm years ago. Our country is lucky to have had the services of Phil Grimm for all those years of Infantry service.

Comments: I need to find anyone that remembers me there.. Sucks it's for my VA Claim after having cancer. I remember a Sgt Flowers drowning during the Spring Flood of 1969. And we were sent out to recover the bodies. I hate to have to do this I feel as I'm begging for my benifits. I'm on SSD now had no problem with them by the VA says that 30 yrs. is to long to put in a claim for Agent Orange and my wife is pushing me to do this. So she is relly doing this for us. And many of my brothers who fought in Vietnam and Korea are all on me. Pride I guess. The treatments for my Cancer has messed up my memory. Just looking for help/. Stationed Camp Colburn, Korea
