Comments: According to the veteran administration nothing happened in Korea during the dates noted along the DMZ. Not one day of combat nor did anyone see combat.
Denied some VA benefits because of it. I want to know why would anyone be less of a veteran just because they were state side or didn't see combat. You serve your country; they tell you where you are going to be stationed or deployed, so why would you be penalized from benefits?
Why is this time in Korea not counted as combat, you were still patrolling the DMZ, there was still a threat; otherwise why would you be there?
I am trying to gain some understanding as to why my father who was proud to serve his country, saw somethings patrolling the DMZ he would like to forget, not deserving of all the benefits that a veteran is and should be entitled to.
If I am overstepping here, I will apologize. But my dad is my hero and he is going through a tough time right now. He just lost my mom last Sept, they were together since they were 15 yrs. old. He is ill and in need of some assistance in the future. Yet, he is being denied. If anyone can help me to understand this, I would appreciate. Lastly, I would like to thank all of the individuals who have and continue to serve our country, it takes a special person to be able to put others before him or herself. God Bless You All!!
Thank you.

Comments: It was the first week of June, 1968 and the 2/23rd Infantry had recently started its southern rotation after a long four months on the DMZ. To our surprise the first platoon of Company A was immediately assigned to Tent City to guard Freedom Bridge for two weeks. After spending our first night on position guarding the bridge, we returned to a hearty breakfast of fresh eggs, bacon and toast. Then Troy Banks, Rick Rohtan, I and another laid our selves down to enjoy our after breakfast smoke and the hot morning sun.
That soon came to an end when a young buck sergeant came over to us and said he had a job for us four men to do and to just follow him. We arose to our feet and followed him as he led us to our destination, the latrines. Then he broke the news to us and said our detail was to pull the half drums full of human feces out and drag them some 50 meters off to the side and pour diesel fuel into the drums and lit them up and let them burn. We looked at each other and just shook our heads and dcided to split up into two man teams.
With those orders we maneuvered behind the latrines and lifted the hinged rear access doors and began pulling the half drums out. The stench coming out of the drums was unbearable. As we struggled draggging the drums filled with human feces towards the burn location we started gagging from the smell but continued until I finally said, "I have had enough of this shit and I am going to get my gas mask". Immediately I made a quick dash towards the tent with three men in hot pursuit. Still gasping for fresh air we made it to our duffel bags and retrieved our gas masks. With our gas masks on we came out of the tent and headed towards the drums while the rest of the platoon had their fun with their taunts and laughter from seeing us with our gas masks on.
Once we reached the drums, we poured diesel fuel into the drums and tossed lit newspaper into each drum. Soon the flames shot up high in the sky followed by a blanket of black smoke that permeated the whole area with the stench and odor of burning diesel fuel, human feces and urine. The rest of the platoon was no longer laughing but running to distance themselves upwind. Now if you thought Kitchen Police or cleaning out a grease trap was bad, that was nothing compared to being assigned to a shit burning detail. Definitely, the worst detail in the Army. Any and all Comments Welcomed, Mario Pacella 2/23rd Infantry

Comments: On April 15, 1969 the North Koreans shot down a Navy plane over the Sea of Japan killing 31 American service men on board. Division ordered the 2/23rd
mechanized infantry as a Quick Reaction Force into the DMZ in the event the North Koreans decided to escalate.
There was anger in our hearts as we mounted our APC's with our 50 calibers mounted and fully loaded, we headed towards the Imjin River. Upon reaching the pontoon bridge at the Honker site, my mind drifted as I was awed as to the marvel of such an engineering wonder.
After crossing the bridge we continued northeast for some distance until we reached our primary objevtive, a string of connecting hills. There we dismounted our tracks and split up into squad size teams and began a sweep of the hills to our front towards our secondary objective two kilometers away. After reaching the base of the first hill on the other side, I made the tactical decision to change the formation from linear to single file since we had to cross a wide open clearing that looked like an old uncultivated rice paddy field.
I asked for a volunteer to walk point and Rick Rohtan, a good soldier and dear friend answered the call. With Rick at point and myself leading the rest of the men a short distance behind, we moved forward until we reached the middle of the clearing when a narrow elavated old dirt road appeared. As I crossed the road I noticed a big pile of rocks just laying there. I wondered how they ever got there and concluded that it must of been an old check point dating back to the Korean War
We continued walking forward towards the hill to our front when I noticed a string of concertina wire strung along the base of the hill. As I moved my eyes to right following the wire, in between the branches of a small tree I noticed a glistening in the sun light from the unpainted side of a metal triangular sign hanging on the wire.
Immediately I yelled out, "Everybody do not move we are all in a mine field". Rick who was 25 feet to my left front turned and looked at me and asked, "Mario what do we do". I knew we were in a danger as the memory of seeing an engineer step on a mine five months earlier came as a flash back. I looked to my rear and calmly told every one to place a marker, a stick or stone in front of each foot. Then I told Rick to take out his bayonet out and to start probing towards me and I would do the same towards him.
With the ground still hard from the winter's cold and years of decomposed vegatation, our probing attempts proved futile. Then I remembered the pile of rocks. Fortunately, there was still one man on the road next to the pile of rocks. I told him to find the bigger and flatest rocks first and to start passing them up to the man in front of him.
When the first rock reached me, I told Rick to crouch down and to cover his face as much as possible. I told him I was going to throw the rock as far as I could in an arching trajectory and hoped that it would not hit a mine. Rick said go for it and with that I threw the rock and it landed about 8 feet in front of me with a thumb. No explosion, so I continued the process until I was able to make a safe path to Rick.
Rick then joined me as we continue to throw rocks forward, both large and small until we had made a path that reached the cocertina wire at the base of the hill. As we straddled over the wire, I looked at the other side of the triangular sign and sure enough in bold white letters on a red sign was the word, Mines. I then told the rest of the men to proceed forward one step at at time into the footsteps of the man in front of him until they reached the path of rocks.
Finally, everybody was out of the mine field and a great sense of relief and joy over came us all. We were happy to of all made it out safely. Somehow, we had inadvertently walked into a minefield from the unmarked side. All in all it seemed so ironic that a year earlier, Rick Rohtan and I were hit in the face by stones kicked up by bullets fired by the North Koreans at us while on to GP Gladys and this day a pile of rocks enabled us to escape the dangers of having walked through a mine field.

Veterans who served in Korean (DMZ) exposed to Agent
Orange
Donald B. Dunn
Roseau County Veterans Service Officer
With the success of Agent Orange removing foliage in
Vietnam, the government expanded its use to other
locations. In 1968 the herbicide was use in Korea at
the DMZ to defoliate large tracks of jungle, removing
any cover and concealment that could be used by North
Korean troops. Although South Korean troops did all of
the spraying by hand, some US servicemembers were
exposed to the herbicide residuals. Agent Orange was
also used along military bases border fences in
Thailand. Bases in Guam were used as storage for Agent
Orange.
Veteran who served at the Korean DMZ between April 1,
1968, and Aug. 31, 1971, in units of the Combat Brigade
of the 2nd Infantry Division, 3rd Brigade of the 7th
Infantry Division, Division Reaction Force or United
Nations Command Security Battalion are presumed to be
exposed. Under the final regulation published January
25, 2011 in the Federal Register, the Department of
Veterans Affairs (VA ) will presume herbicide exposure
for any Veteran who served between April 1, 1968, and
Aug. 31, 1971, in a unit determined by VA and the
Department of Defense (DoD) to have operated in an area
in or near the Korean DMZ in which herbicides were
applied. In practical terms, eligible Veterans who
have specific illnesses VA presumes to be associated
with herbicide exposure do not have to prove an
association between their illness and their military
service. This presumption simplifies and speeds up
the application process for benefits and ensures that
Veterans receive the benefits they deserve.
Veterans exposed to herbicides while serving along the
demilitarized zone (DMZ) in Korea will have an easier
path to access health care and benefits under a VA
final regulation for illnesses caused by herbicide
exposure can be presumed to be related to Agent Orange.
The following are only a few of the known health
problems caused by Agent Orange exposure:
Ischemic Heart disease
Type 2 Diabetes (adult onset)
Prostate Cancer
Respiratory Cancers
Hodgkins and Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma
If you served at the Korean DMZ between April 1968 and
August 1971, or believe you were exposed to Agent
Orange in Thailand or Guam during the same timeframe,
contact me at 218-463-3308.

I served at camp casey in 1975-76, and spent many days in the field at or near the dmz. I was diagnosed with leukemia in 2009, and I see that leukemia can result from agent orange exposure. The presumptive list states for those that served in 1968-69, but I am wondering if the list will include later service dates. has anyone been tested or gone through the process of testing by the va for agent orange exposure ? any info would be most appreciated. thank you

Keywords: Looking for anyone that was stationed in Inchon, Korea in 68/69. 1968 Lt. Jackson was CO. We were at the port of Inchoin, and we protected Wolmido Island. I observed koreans spaying foilage with herbicides but need someone else that served there that also observed this. We use to walk around on patrol and get wet from the spayed foilage. Trying to establish exposure to Agent Orange. I know they sprayed there, just cannot prove it YET. Thanks and God Bless.

Comments: Fellow Vets,
I'm a recovering cancer patient that served in 'Nam and am working on benefits for a friend who served in Korea. He served with the 6th Battalion, 44th Air Defense Command (Hawk Missiles) at Camp Howard and Bravo Battery at Kunsan for about a year in 1969. His name is Don Ptacnik.
I'm convinced the Agent Orange defoliant was used more extensively in Korea than just the DMZ much like it was used in 'Nam... especially around air bases like Kunsan, missile sites, gunnery emplacements, and all the "barren" hills that surrounded these areas.
I just started searching for more info and looking for anyone that has won benefits and why, or knows of any aerial spraying, or spraying by any other means, of this extremely deadly chemical.
I truly believe there is more to this than we currently know or the VA will admit to, and with God's help... we'll find it.
Hopefully we can share efforts here... please let me know of any progress you make and I'll do the same.
Regards,
Tony Natoli

We were one of two teams sent to the Korean DMZ from 1st SFGA Okinawa in response to the Blue House Raid and the Pueblo Incident. We served as trainers in small unit tactics, day/night patrols, ambushes, etc. for elements of these divisions on the DMZ from April-July 1968. I was the detachment commander. Comments: My dad served in South Korea during 1968 and 1969. He has been battling non-small cell lung cancer and brain cancer. Do you know of anyone that may have served with him that also has cancer? Veteran Affairs denied benefits because he wasn't physicaly in Vietnam. Maine Veteran Affairs told him that if he had stepped on Veitnam Territory even for brief second he would be eligible. I would appreciate any information or help you can give. Thank you.
