Comments: It was Easter Sunday, April 14,1968 when my friend Tom Cramer and myself were enjoying a movie in the theater at Camp Greaves. Suddenly, we heard an explosion. Unbeknown to us until we came out that we were told that someone had spotted a grenade laying on the ground near the orderly room. Sgt. Patterson, our arms room sergeant was called and as he checked the grenade, it exploded and killed him. Officially, his death was ruled accidental, apparently the clip on the grenade must of been cracked.
I have always had some reservations and suspicions to the accuratecy of that account. However, thanks to the efforts of Tom Mraz, HHC 2/23 infantry, who was able to contact some old friends and relay their accounts to me of what actually happened, that I now know the truth. Sgt. Patterson died as a result of a senseless accident caused by a fellow soldier, whose actions can only be characterized as totally irresponsible. As a result of such a "stupid" act is the reason why we lost such a fine young man.
Although it has been over 42 years ago, let me put a face on who Sgt. Patterson was. First,I considered him a friend, who was bright, intelligent and well respected. When I first met him, he welcomed me to the company and told me that when ever I went out on position, he would give me what ever I needed and added that he was there to help all of us on the front line. Very encouraging words to a 19 year old.
So for the next six weeks I saw Sgt. Patterson almost every day and every time I walked into the arms room, with a big smile he would say, "Pacella from Buffalo, what do you need today". On one occasion, he showed me the vast aray of weapons at our disposal and seeing that I was intrigued with the 45 cal. grease gun, he told me was setting up a training exercise for that weapon and the 45 cal. pistol and to sign the register for the class. A week later, there I was along with a number of other men on the camp range with a SFC weapons specialist who taught us how to fire and maintain those weapons.
On another occasion I learned that Sgt. Patterson was an attorney in civilian life and would of liked to have been asigned to a JAG unit, but that required a four year enlistment. So when placed to Supply Support Group, he considered himself fortunate and was happy with his duties in the arms room. What made Sgt. Patterson's death even more tragic was that he only had two more weeks before he was to go home. On behalf of all who knew him, I would like to extend a belated sympathy to his family. Sincerely, Mario Pacella

Will Pleasants JR. wrote on December 9, 2010

Comments: C and P Service has determined that the 2nd Military Police Company of the 2nd Infantry Division should be added to the list of units that operated at or near the Korean demilitarized zone (DMZ) between April 1968 and July 1969. DoD has acknowledged that tactical herbicides, such as Agent Orange, were used along the DMZ during that time frame. Although DoD information served to establish the initial list, research conducted by JSRRC (Army and Joint Services Records Research Center) and C and P Service continues to periodically add units to the list. M21-1MR contains the list and is updated as units are added. A proposed regulation has been published in the Federal Register that would create a presumption of tactical herbicide exposure for Veterans who served in one of these units during the time frame of herbicide use.
The 2nd Military Police Company of the 2nd Infantry Division should be added to the list because an official history of that unit, dated February 10, 1969, shows that the unit, "Maintained control of traffic and Korean Nationals crossing Freedom and Libby Bridges." A map of the Korean DMZ shows that Freedom Bridge is approximately one mile from the DMZ. This places the unit near the DMZ and indicates that its members likely responded to incidents occurring even closer to the DMZ.

Comments: I am filing a claim for exposure to Agent Orange. Our unit sent several men to spray Agent Orange, clear the dead vegatation, and dig bunkers that was being done to provide a defensive line. Various units did this in the Spring, Summer, and Fall of 1968. As I recall we went with other units that were doing the saame. I was with B Battery 6th Bn 80 Arty.
I believe some others there were Spec Gordon and Motor Pool Sgt "Tiny", unfortunately I have forgotten Tiny's last name. I believe our CO at that time was 1st Lt. Philip Deutsch, and First Sgt. Williams. Anyone who can verify our being detailed for this assignment would be greatly appreciated if you would respond to this email. Also, we made several trips out to the field for maneuvers throughout 1968 and I am sure we all had exposure to Agent Orange as that time.
Thank you, and God Bless each of our old Army buddies and their families.

Comments: Thanks to a e-mail from a fellow Korean veteran, named Michael Witmer, I decided to make this entry. Back in 1968, the Korean DMZ was a hostile place to serve especially if you had a 11B MOS. But too often we forget the contributions made by the men who served outside of the infantry. One group of men I admired were the men who served in the artillery. I had the good fortune to attend ACTA, got my E-5 stripe, but more important while there I learned the basic workings of an FO and how to call in artillery. Well one night in Nov.68, while on barrier fence duty, on a moonless night, dark, cloudy and no stars shinning, the men on position in our sector started getting on edge. They were hearing all sorts of sounds, calling each other if we could see anything out there. With no stars out, the starlight scope was worthless and a hand launched flare was of little value. So finally I called all the guys in our sector and told them, "the hell with it, I was going to call in an illlumination fire mission". I radioed artillery and told them what I needed and before I could give him my coordinance, he said just give me your position number cause we have them all plotted and just tell me where you want it. I said 150 meters to my right front and 300 meters up. He said get ready it will be there in 3 minutes. I called everybody and told them where to set their aim, and sure enough in 3 minutes we heard a pop high in the sky and the whole sector lit up. We could see everything out there. Unfortunately, there were no infiltrators out there. Had they been out there, we would of had them in a crossfire and it would of been all over for them. After that night, seeing how accurate the artillery could be I found a high regard for the artillery and knew if the North Koreans ever launched a major invasion I knew that if we could hold out for a few minutes, we would be able to rain a barrage of artillery rounds on them and stop them cold. That is when I realized that next to the man next to you in the foxhole, your next best friend in the infantry was the artillery.

If I remember correctly there were barells of A/O stored under the shelters at the 547th, am I correct. Any one from that time era giving me help will probably answer questions for many other vets. The government is trying to wait us out. Why is there not presumption for affected Korean vets that have any one of these listed medical problems.
Larry Anderson and any other Camp Mercer or Kimpo vet if you can respond by mail or email I would be forever greatful.

Comments: This story is a sequel to a recent entry titled, "Miracle on a Hill", about how a little spring saved a man's life. My mind was a total blank as to what occurred afterwards that day until I received an e-mail from Thomas Cramer, Co. A 2/23 Inf, its contents jotted my memory and allows me to continue to write about the events of that day.
With Marvin Williams safely evacuated, it was time for the 3rd and 4th squad to join up with the 1st and 2nd squad. SSGT. Landers had returned to lead us down the ravine to join up with the other half of the platoon. Once we met up, we continued down the ravine when gradually the bottom of the ravine started to turn into a shallow little stream. After some distance, with our situation getting some what tenuous, SSGT. Landers with the RTO decided to scout up ahead and left Sgt. Tom Cramer in charge of the platoon and for us to continue to follow but at a much slower pace.
After walking a short distance and the temperature well over 100 degrees, the heat again stared to take its toll. All of a sudden, men started dropping to the ground from heat exhaustion and dehydration. Sgt. Cramer, a tall sturdy man and well educated, recognized the severity of the situation and immediately went into action. He picked one man up by himself and layed him in the middle of that shallow stream. Then I helped him carry the second man, while others took care of the rest.
Fortunately, members of the 3rd and 4th squad had canteens filled with cold water from the little spring that had saved Marvin Williams. We were able to pass them around to all the men to drink. We also made sure the men who had suffered from heat exhaustion and dehydration were taken care of. We rested for some twenty minutes when our platoon sergeant returned and we started walking again. Suddenly, the little stream grew larger as the ravine broke through the hills onto the beach line and into the banks of the Imjin River.
Exhausted, we ran to the river's edge when the OK was given for us to jump in for a refreshing swim. Ecstatic and overjoyed, everybody stripped down to their shorts and in we went. For that brief time, we were like kids back in the states, enjoying a hot summer day at the beach, splashing and dunking each other. The water was crystal clear, unlike the waters near Freedom Bridge. A good ending to what could of been a fatal day for many of us.
An added note, after our swim I asked one of the Katusa assigned to our unit why the water was so clear there. He told me that prior to the soutern banks of the Imjin River becoming a restricted area and our second line of defense, that location was one of the most popular recreational areas for swimming in South Korea. All comments welcomed.

Seems to be a some of mix up with some between the 547th Eng. Bn and the 547 Eng. Co. FB(Float Bridge) Camp Mercer, Korea which I was with from Jan 1968 - Jan 1969. I know now that Camp Mercer is gone and 547th Eng. Co FB has been deactivated. Most just see the 547th and miss the Bn or Company.
A little bit of history about the 547th Eng. Co. FB: Formed in 1921. It was ordered to active duty at Camp Rucker, Alabama on April 26, 1944 and participated in the Rhineland Campaign in Germany during the period of 15 Sept. 1944 to March 1945. It returned to the U.S. in Feb. 1945 and was deactivated on 13 Nov. 1950. On 6 Dec. 1951 it was activated as the 547th Engineer Panel Bridge Company and assigned to the Eighth United States Army, Korea. It was redesignated as the 547th Engineer Company (Float Bridge) on 18th March 1955 and provides float bridge support to the 26th Eng. Group (Combat) in the First Corps area, Korea.
This information was in one of the picture year books I got while I was with the 547th Eng. Co (FB).
