Comments: I'm a military daughter searching for anyone who served or has information on the US Army's presence in the Korean DMZ for the years 1961-1963. My late father, Joseph Lima, served there and was part of the 1st cavalry division Howitzer battalion. I believe he may have done some training at Fort Sill because I found a picture of the airplane he took from Lawton, OK to Oakland, CA before being sent to the DMZ. I also have a picture of him sitting on a cannon in "Howitzer Park" as the photo is labeled, a watch tower "Post 2" which is labeled on the back that "Carter died when he fell off of it Jan 1, 1962", a picture of barbed wire fencing along the DMZ labeled "Charlie Block", and a picture of one of his buddies named "Grover Tackett" standing on their base with the mess hall, guard house and living quarters in the background. Just trying to learn about his service and what it was like there in the DMZ. Thank you.

David K. Rogers
12 December 2019

After arrival at HHC, 2nd Infantry Division 2ID Chemical Section, Camp Howze on 06 May 1969, I was assigned as the Officer-in-Charge of all defoliation operations within the 2ID sector of the Korean DMZ and sent by TDY orders to Camp Liberty Bell 2/23 Inf located north of the Imjin River Civilian Control Line and a few hundred meters south of the DMZ Barrier Fence. As a Platoon Leader of Korean Augmentation to U.S. Army KATUSA soldiers, with the assistance from former SSG James J. Furgal, HHC, 2ID Chemical Section and former SGT William Gary McGuire, 25th Chemical Company, I Corps Special Troops, the Korean DMZ defoliation operations that began in March 1968 by the Free Republic of Korea Army FROKA , Korean Military Advisory Group KMAG , and 2ID Chemical Section continued in 1969-70.

Due to funding and security restraints, FROKA did not participate in the 1969-70 defoliation operations of the 2ID sector of the Korean DMZ.

The mission I was charged with included ground spraying Agent Orange at full strength right from the 55 gallon drums. There was no dilution of Agent Orange because aerial spraying in the DMZ was prohibited by the 1955 Korean Armistice. Ironically, the U.S. Senate never ratified the 1925 Geneva Conference banning the use of chemical/biological warfare until 1975 under President Ford, which justified our government to start using chemical/biological agents in Vietnam, the Korean DMZ, Thailand, Laos, Panama, Guam and other Vietnam-era theaters in the late 1960’s.

Agent Blue, a pre-mixed solution of about 5 percent cacodylic acid, 27percent sodium cacodylate, 8 percent surfactant and salt, and about 60percent water, was applied, in a similar manner as Agent Orange, but to conifers and grasses instead of hardwoods.

The other herbicide applied to grasses was Telvar Monuron, which came in 100 lb bags of white powder that was mixed with water in a Power Driven Decontamination Apparatus PDDA. The PDDA could not be used for spraying Agents Orange/Blue for several logistical and technical reasons.

Our mission was to spray fields of fire around all Observation Posts OP’s, Guard Posts GP’s in front of the minefield/barrier fence, along the barrier fence, and along all unimproved roads by the barrier fence and leading from the Civilian Control Line to the OP’s and GP’s to prevent/minimize North Korean assault teams from ambushing U.S. Army work parties and soldiers stationed within and around the DMZ.

The 1969-70 defoliation operations did improve fields of fire and security along access roads, lessening the number and severity of the North Korean attacks.

To be continued.

I just finished reading Gary Gable's novel "Denial of Conflict" A great book that captures life on the DMZ during the DMZ War. If you served on the DMZ in the late 60's or early 70's this is one book you need to read. Never has book been so well written of a generation of GI's who have been forgotten.

Comments: Question for anyone. When I went from Ft Bennings to South Korea, my orders said I was assigned to the 7th AG Admin Co APO 96207. My orders included several other GI's going to Korea and assigned to the same 7th AG Admin Co.

I'm sure that was to get me there and I probably was assigned to another unit. but being 74 years old, I really don't remember. I just remember the 7th Infantry Division at Camp Casey.

Then when I got out , my DD214 shows my last unit as HHC 7th Infantry Div
I was a Recon Specialist Sgt E5 and remember going on patrols but not much else. The VA rep requested my military records, and sent them to me, but I cannot see an order assigning me to an infantry unit after I got there.

My question is does anyone else out there have the same experience or did you actually get orders assigning you to a sub unit of the 7th Infantry Div.

Comments: Hello all who are reading this here is some help possibly for you with your claims. I have been helping my friend and 1SG Brian Koeman with his VA claim, He served in Korea, Camp Kyle, March 1969 - April 1970. as you all know finding the link that he served near or on the DMZ has been difficult. as you all know who are doing the same thing, the VA is mainly approving the claim if you served in a specific unit.

Brian's orders sending him to Korea attached him to the 177th AG Replacement Co. Luckly while he was there he was promoted. On his promotion orders his unit was HQ & A Company Maintenance Battalion and in the comments his promotion was recommended by 21st Direct Support Group. none of these units are listed on the VA approved unit list who they agree served in or near the DMZ.

Actually the mission of the 21st Direct Support Group was It’s mission was to provided direct support maintenance for the 2nd Infantry, the 7th Infantry, I Corps Gp and 1st ROK Army areas. This is the link for Exposure to Agent Orange. the approved units on the VA lists are 2nd & 7th Infantry.

Go to the below link, find the 21st Direct Support Group and you will find the documentation to prove you were support for the 2nd Infantry, the 7th Infantry, I Corps Gp and 1st ROK Army areas.

Comments: According to the Vegetation Control Program CY1968 the spray areas were north of the Civilian Control Line (CCL) and south of the southern Boundary of the DMZ(south tape) and Priority 1 a 100 meter strip on each side of the DMZ security Fence System. Priority 2 Tactically significant areas in the vicinity of OP’s, CP’s and other vital areas. In order to preserve natural camouflage, manual clearing would be accomplished first and then defoliants would be applied to improve firing lanes and to deny concealment to would be infiltrators. Priority 3 a 30 meter strip on each side of tactically significant roads in the forward areas.

Unused Agent Orange was put on road ways, road sides, in rivers including the Imjin River or into creek beds.

Comments: Please help me with any information to prove that Rufus Grier was stationed on the DMZ
in Korea during 1969. He has filed a appeal that was won with the help of the VFW thru
the Veterans Court of Appeals in Washington DC. This veteran has been thrown around the
system with no one that has truly helped this veteran to get the benefits he deserves.

especially those who lost their lives. She passed away from soft tissue sarcoma in
