My records were destroyed in fire and I am hoping to find some one out ther that remembers Wes Howell and Porter, who worked the DMZ for booby traps, mines and other ordnance. Comments: I served with Btry A 2/71 (HAWK) 38 Arty 1967-1968 I was there when the USS Pebelo was taken by the north koreans and the blue house raid happened. The U. S. Government brought agent orange to Korea after these incidents and most of our bases were sprayed. When the truck came to spray our base I was required to draw a weapon and ride on top of the truck and now I have prostate cancer, diabities, high blood pressues with secondary problems atributted to each. I have been trying to do research on the units within the 38 Arty and not have much luck. I am looking to hear from other people who were assigned to these units to find out how we are doing. The VA is not going to take us seriously unless we stick together. We need to support each other with " buddy letters " and building a history of who we were and what we did. There is a rich history of the first cav, the second and seventh inf, richely deserved, but nothing on our units. We have a page for each unit under eight army on the webpage www.koreaatourofduty.org which allows each person to post their information and any photos they might have and their memories, if they are willing to write them. We need to band together to help esch other. I will help anyone who wants to contact me directly with problems with the VA.

Comments: Hi,
I was with "A" company 3/23rd, 2nd ID from 1965 to 1966. When I first arrived I was in the 1st Calvary. In 1965 we were taken over by the 2nd infantry and the 3/23rd moved to the north side of the Imjin. Headquarters was at one camp but "A" company was located in a smaller compound by itself. I think HHC was at Camp Dodge but I don't remember the name of the camp where "A" company was located. I've seen photos of Camp Wentzel and it looks like the camp where we, "A " company, were. Does anyone know anything about this? In the photo of Camp Wentzel, it says that "A" company 2/9 "Manchus" was at Wentzel. I think the photo was taken in 1969 so it may be that they replaced A 3/23rd. I wish I knew. I was FDC for the mortar squad in the weapons platoon when I first got there. Later, I was allowed to work at my true MOS which was a combat medic and was attached to "A" company which was located down the way from HHC 3/23rd.
   Thanks Ralph Alves

Comments: Guys (and Gals):

We truly lived in interesting times, in the Chinese sense of the expression. We who served in Korea after the 1953 cease-fire agreement learned that the agreement meant different things to different people. When I was on orders to Korea (in 1965) an NCO in my unit who had just returned from Korea told me that I should read Fehrenbach's THIS KIND OF WAR so that I could understand a little better where I was going to. I laughed, but read it. I told the NCO it told of a war that ended in 1953. He told me I should understand that the war was not over, and that I would learn that fact when I got there. I did. So did those of you reading this who went there. That war DID NOT end in 1953. You know that, those of you who went there and who served as "forgotten men and women" at a time when our nation had forgotten Korea, and, most especially, when our nation was paying a much bigger blood price in Vietnam. We were forgotten. When we talk to veterans of the 1950-53 war we elicit curiosity on their part, because they feel that their terribly costly war ended in 1953. They look at us with curiosity. Vietnam vets look at us as lucky people who got to go to a "peaceful" part of the world when they went to a very dangerous part of the world. OK. In comparison, our twilight zone was alot different from their war. But we spent sleepless nights, and we, too, conducted ambush patrols. And we learned how heartless and utterly ruthless the NK's were, even at a time when our fellow Americans at home considered them creatures of the past. They never went away.

So, brothers and sisters of the 8th Army, I salute you and all your efforts of the post-1953 phases of the Korean War--all phases. Some were relatively quiet phases, some were pretty "active" phases. Some, in Army Regulations, qualified us for right-sleeve combat patches, some did not. Some even doled out combat pay, and (a few) CIB's.

But all of you gave of yourselves, gave of your youth, and got little or no thanks for it.

We honor one another. That's what counts.

I salute you all,

Cody
