William Rey SR. wrote on August 18, 2023
City and State: BELTON MO
Unit: 1/4 FIELD ARTILLERY GUNZ OF THE DMZ
Service or Relationship: U.S. Army
Comments: I am puzzled as to why there is so little online about Fire Base 4P3. For a period it was the only active Fire Base occupied by the U.S. Army. It was occupied by the 2ND INFANTRY DIVISION'S Artillery Batallions. I was with the 1st BN 4TH FA. We were closest FA BN to the DMZ. We lived on Camp Pelham in the village of Son Yuri. The Fire Base had 8 concrete and steel reinforced Bunkers that housed a 155mm Cannon and enough RAAM(remote anti armor mines) and ADAMS(area denial artillery munitions) to at least slow any advance of the North Korean through the JSA( joint security area) which is the most likely avenue of approach if the North Koreans invaded South Korea. I learned the mission of the DMZ soldiers of the 2ND INF DIV when I was transported to the DMZ from the Turtle Farm at Camp Casey. Every MSR(military supply route) North of Camp Casey had tank drops on a line that paralleled the DMZ/The border between N. and S. Korea. If an invasion was iminant or executed the Combat Engineers would deploy and detonate the tank drops with shaped charges and would completely block the MSR and stop any entry or exit from the DMZ. It would be impossible for any vehicles to travel into or out of the DMZ. All the 2ID soldiers south of the tank drops mission became to secure the capital city of Seoul. Us that were North of the tank drops mission became to fight the North Koreans and their allies to slow or stop the invasion. There would be no stopping them. At 4P3 We were given a briefing that graphically showed that we were outnumbered exponentially by the North. There was a map on the wall of the entire DMZ. They told us the lights we will see on the map North of the border represent the number of Artillery fire bases that will support an invasion. I could not count the number of lights there were so many. Then they told us the lights that we will see south of the DMZ will represent the number of Artillery Fire Bases that will defend against an invasion. 1 light lit up. It represented us on Fire Base 4P3. They continued on with the Infantry on the north and south, Armor, and all other branches of combat groups and the story was the same. I then realized that the DMZ soldiers North of Camp Casey and the tank drops are all on a suicide mission in the event of an invasion. My initial thinking of being in Korea on the DMZ and occupying Fire Base 4P3 was pretty cool just turned into "OH Shit". Now, it was 1990 at the time, Desert Shield was just about to moving U.S. Forces towards Bagdahd. During our briefing at the Fire Base they informed us that many of the allocated reinforcement groups from all branches of service in nearby countries were deployed or deploying to the desert. My pucker factor was a bit elevated. I was a SSG and a Howitzer Section Chief. I made sure my soldiers completely understood our situation and our mission. My soldiers were well trained and true warriors. I made a decision mix things up a bit should an invasion ever happen while at the Fire Base. If it started, All the Howitzer teams will get to their bunkers and start pumping the RAAM and ADAMS to lay a minefield and slow the invading North. Knowing that the actual border is only a few kilometers from the Fire Base. So close, that you can hear the PA speakers at Panmunjon speaking propaganda to the south every night. I told my soldiers if the shit hits the fan, my gunner will take over my job of giving the Fire commands based on FDC(Fire direction center) data. Myself and my driver would set up our crew served weapon, tripod and ammo at the front of the bunker and kill anything moving to ours or adjacent Bunkers so my team can complete our mission of laying a minefield of RAAM and ADAMS Projectiles. Tours at 4P3 last 30 days on a prison like compound. You are on duty 24/7. We do cover missions when our Infantry sends out patrols a Howitzer will track and follow the recon team so if they encounter any tunnel digger or North Korean threat, we are at the ready to provide support with Lume or HE rounds. So we sleep when we can. The Korean Nationals that man the guard towers at the Fire Base go on strike every Christmas and New Years. So we have to start a guard rotation. I remember being in a guard tower on Christmas Eve with a broken heater and just listening to the propaganda coming from panmunjon and wishing that I get all my soldiers back to their families back in the world(U.S.) One night about 3:00am me, my gunner and some of my soldiers are watching the News on AFN Korea(armed forces network) and it started. The first bombs started falling on Bagdahd. No sooner, all our alert alarms start screaming. We know that the north has a window of opportunity to do the unthinkable. The bulk of our support combat groups in the desert. My team ran like they never had during drills, they all had their flack jackets, protective masks, Kevlar and everything else. Sometimes someone will forget something. I had the Howitzer firing mechanism in my hand. It is usually attached to my protective mask. There were no smiles, none of the joking or laughing that usually happens on drills and alerts. I realized that my soldiers were on point, they knew what could be happening. They all went to their spot and did what they were trained to do. My Gunner was on the gunners site waiting for my commands as was the rest of my Red Legs. I gave the commands that were displayed on my SCA(section chief assembly) On the SCA, a little red light will be under one of 3 commands, one is AMC(at my command) which means fire the Cannon when given the command to Fire by FDC, or DNL which means do not load and is considered a dry fire mission and is simply training. The other is F, F is the one that you shoot a live Artillery projectile into North Korea and your chances of getting home to your family safe are pretty slim being exponentially outnumbered by a well armed enemy, no escape routes available, reinforcements half way across the earth, my soldiers just looked at me waiting for the command. when I gave the command Do Not Load, I saw my team display a hint of relief at first, then joy showed up and we yelled and gave thanks. Then I told my team, it ain't over. We are still on the Fire Base and will do what we do as 2nd ID Artillerymen. I was very prod of my team. I took a picture of my soldiers right after that alert. The smiles were huge and I know they would have been successful in completing their mission if them Northside Crazies came across. True Warriors, Second to none.

Comments: July 1, 2015 marks the 50th Anniversary of the 2IDs return to Korea after the cease fire in the Korean War. The 2ID played a major role in the Korean War and it was appropriate that the Division return to continue to play a major role in guarding Freedoms Frontier.
On that day in July, the 1st Cavalry Division was reflagged as the 2nd Infantry Division at Camp Howze which was Division HQ at the time. The 2nd Indianhead Division Association is organizing a return trip for 2IDA members that were present at the reflagging and for other DMZ veterans that would like to go. We anticipate a group of about 25-30 and are still working out the details. We are working on the eligibility for participation. We are beginning a major fundraising effort to help offset the cost of the trip for the returning veterans and need to know the level of interest in this trip. The tentative plan is to depart Los Angeles about June 26 or 27, 2015 to return about July 3. You will need a current passport. If you are interested, please let us know at 2ida.mail@charter.net. Your e-mail is not a commitment, but merely an expression of interest. The leadership of the active 2ID has generously agreed to help with planning the celebration events and perhaps some tours of the area. The 2ID Commanding General and Command Sergeant Major are already at work This can be a once in a lifetime opportunity. Please let us know now so we can continue our planning.

Comments: I am looking for my old friends Who were stationed at Camp Casey From Dec. 89 - Jun 91, I hope to find my old squad leader Orlando Sanchez who went to advise family of Sgt Johnson's passing on his last field exercise before he was due to return home... Or even my old Top! 1Sgt Nelson who was like my family by looking after me back in those days... If you know where either are now today please help me locate them... They are the only ones who may have some info. I need about my past... Thank you all!!!

Comments: I was at Camp Hawkeye, C Btry 1st Bn, 2nd ADA, Nam Yang, ROK from June 1979 to June 1980. That one short year had more of an impact on me than my entire career afterward and on thru to retirement. I've posted a couple of times on here over the years, just trying to connect with some of the crew, no matter what year or years you were there because as all who served in any part of South Korea know, the connection to our particular unit/location has not so much to do with any particular time frame but more so with the fact that we have that special something in common that only those of us who were there can understand.

Comments: Best time I had in the army. I worked in pol filling up fuel tanks and heaters so your butt had heat in the barracks. and drove the big tour bus for the tours. Remember taking the guys to the night land nav class and had twenty guys push starting the bus down the road at 2 am because the batteries died. !!! Lol
