Comments: I was on the DMZ for 7 months in 1968. Earlier that year I was at Camp Casey at the time of the capture of USS Pueblo. It was a hard time to be in the millitary and we were all very young. The news was all about what was happening in Viet Nam. Nobody read about the fire fights on the DMZ, mines left over from the War and helicopters shot done by the North.

Don't think about it much anymore but do remember.

On top of that, the VA is not helping him at all. And he does need to give them facts.
Remember the actually killing isn't going to get him what he needs. It's sad to hear the stories and see him upset so I'd like to hand him a few if not a stack of papers on his unit.
He was drafted right before his wife had their first baby and came back two years later.
Any help would be a lot of help.
Thanks guys

I know I was there and remember Cyrus Vance's visit to Bridge of no return and to the village at the DMZ.

Where can get this history and read about that time period and the 1st cav div. during this time period.

Comments: What a terrific site. 40 years later and the memories of service are still fresh and remembered fondly. Performed radar surveillance on the DMZ with 3/32 Inf of the 7th Inf Div in Nov 67 thru Jan 68. With good buddies Doherty, Fitch, Marshall, Nace, Lesczyski, Siegrist, Niemand, and Levinson, we manned OP Hendrix and Dessart thru the holidays and winter months just before the N.Koreans seized the USS Pueblo. Remember the icy roads up to the OP's, 3 day rotations with C-Rations, building sand bag bunkers, charging the radar unit batteries during the day, and operating the radar units at night trying to catch N Korean infiltrators. Very surreal environment. Rotated home in May '68 a little more mature, and upon reflection grateful for the opportunity to serve.

Sheilds,Vick And Jones were wounded and sent back to the states. The story around it is. They were on a wood chopping detail for the officers club while they were off the Z. A Lt at S3 cleared the area they were to chop wood in, meaning it was not mined. It was mined and sheilds lost a leg from his upper thigh down, Vick lost his foot from the ankel down and Jones lost one eye from the shrapnel from a land mine. FROM a land mine that was not suppose to be there. The Lt was transfered the next day, probably saved his life the transfer. PVT Saterfeild crawled into the mine feild tied off the stumps and brought the three men out of the mine field.
I visited them later in the Hospital way down south some where.

I donot remember Saterfeild getting a medal for the incident. But do remember others who did receive medals for a hell of a lot less.

Still looking for some of the guys.

Comments: I served with HHC 2/38th 68-69 and was assigned to HHC Recon Platoon. Which was a ready reaction force controled by the Brigade S3. We lived in a sand bag bunker about 300 yards from the actual fence. We ran around in gun jeeps and 106 anti tank gun jeeps. Pulled a lot of stake outs on the Imjim along the Z and other places. Blue Lancer Valley was the rotation point for us after our 4 month stint on the Z, then after 4 months rotate back. Pulled a lot of time on Guard duty in Blue Lancer Valley, the mountain top south of the valley that overlooked the whole place. A lot of Guard duty on the Imjin south of the river.
As a group we stood out because some one.. I am sure very High Up had deciced that we should wear Black Berets with the logo strike force with a lightning bolt. Am quit sure some of you remember the Recon Platoon.
I was scheduled to pull guard duty on th mountain and kind of borrowed << STOLE>> the ISG 3/4 ton truck. It was so icy i ran the thing in a ditch, still humped it to the top. The First SGT called me in the next day after i got off and he had my pass in his hand. He opened a bottom drawer on his desk and droped my pass in to it, closed it and said get out. He kept it most of my tour over there. It might have saved me from getting some treatments that some of my buddies were getting.

Would like to make contact with some or all of those guys.

Comments: Please contact me. I am looking for any and all former members of the 2nd Engineer Battalion from any Company who served in Korea at any time in 1967 thru 1969.

Several of your brothers are still fighting the effects of our time in Korea. We need photos, copies of Combat Pay orders, statements of duties of the 2nd Engineers who worked in and along the DMZ or who were in my Company, E Company (Float Bridge).

Right now I am working with several guys from 2nd Engineer Battalion who have multiple health issues as a direct result of exposure to Agent Orange. Yes guys, that stuff sprayed along the fence, around the guard towers and the Guard Posts and Out Posts we were building was the infamous Agent Orange. The stuff sprayed along the roads inside the Zone and around the bridgeheads at Freedom, Libby and the Spoonbill Bridges was Agent Orange. The stuff sprayed around our compounds to kill the brush and weeds was Agent Orange.

Even if you have not had any symtoms, like Diabetes, heart problems, a variety of different cancers, or any other health issues, we need to hear from you. And if you are fighting or have faught with VA for care and compensation for these health problems, we need to hear from you. And most importantly, if you had children conceived after your return from Korea who were born with birth defects, we need to hear from you. If you have been successful in winning a claim filed for Agent Orange poisoning or PTSD as a result of your service in Korea, it is very important for you to contact me.

Even though I am just a former Captain and Company Commander, I made a promise 40 years ago to stand up for my men and to back them in anything as long as they did what the officers and NCOs asked them to do. I take that promise very seriously and now, 40 years later, I will continue to back and stand up for our men. It is very important that I hear from you as soon as possible. For many of your brothers, the time could be very short, but they have families who will need help even if it is too late for the men themselves.

If you can and will help, please contact me at my email: pesteward@hotmail.com, or call me at (706) 996 - 4057.

Thank you.

Comments: I arrived in Korea in may of 65. I was sent to co c of the first of the eighth cavery div. My co was aready earning hazardous duty pay, so I know for a fact that the DMZ WAR started at least before may of 65.My first day in the zone started with an alert and our platoon sgt threw me a grease gun with a magazine that held 30 45 cal. rounds. Well I had never even seen a grease gun or a flak jacket. Five days earier I was raising hell in my home town of Jacksonville,Fl back in the world. Now I was in a real hell. That first day we went to aid one of our HUNTER-KILLER patrols that was in a firefight with an unknown number of North Korean agents. The firefight was over when we arrived, but a chink was sitting on a big rock while a G I was wraping up his head that a bullet had taken about quarter of off. He was so doped up that he did not care either way. I will not go into all the other stuff that happened on my tour, but that 11 mons and 29 days changed my life forever. you know the odd thing about the hush hush Korean DMZ WAR is the guys that went to nam and came back and claim that they get no respect, well we got no respect or thanks because it sounded like liars when we told our experiences, The nam guys were the worst. I just clamed up for years. Thank GOD for the internet. Anybody that remembers Dennis Dix from florida or had similer things happen, leave me a message.

If joe flooded across the line,we had to blow freedom bridge up before they could cross it and invade the south. This is the same time as vietnam was heating up. I rode the same troop carrier with the First Marine div. on thier way to nam. The u s s Breckinridge
