Comments: Anyone that might have knowledge of a soldiers death at Camp Baker on Sept 1, 1968?
I was one of the men that found him, an ambulance came, I was pretty shaken up by
it, medic told me it was a 50/50% chance he would have made it.
I have been suffering for the last 48 years. My Army career went into limbo, I
spent 3 years as an E-4, but held down E-5 slots.
I can't remember very much, so I need help.

Comments: Forwarded below is an E-mail I sent to a fellow GI I served with in the 2nd Inf Div during 1967.
The link for the video Toxic Secrets which documents AO disposal in Korea is:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-XpyE8zNX14
I hope this may be of help to my fellow vets in their struggles to substantiate AO claims with the VA.
My E-mail follows:
I wish you well with your VFW rep meeting.
Moons, it would be great if your VFW rep would agree to watch the entire 35 minute video, but I'm guessing based on his/her time constraints that would be unlikely during a face-to-face meeting.
So, I found several key points in the video I hope may be helpful for those filing VA claims and you might be able to view them with your VFW rep on your laptop at your meeting.
I'm detailing them below with the time stamps on the video so you'll be able to quickly reference and hopefully be able to view them during your visit with the rep:
1) Starting at just after the 24:00 point on the video Steven House and Richard Travis, then EMs talk of being tasked to bury approximately 250 55-gallon drums of agent orange at a Camp Carroll South Korea dump site in 1978. Travis identifies the barrels as containing agent orance and carrying 1967 dates on them. Pertinent info runs several minutes.
2) Starting at about 32:00 Steve House provides info that agent orange together with other toxic chemicals had been dumped at Camp Carroll for a number of years prior to 1978. The toxic chemicals, including possibly agent orange, he mentioned could have been used at any point anywhere in South Korea including the locations and during the time you served there.
The point of this E-mail is that agent orange barrels with 1967 dates on them were in Korea.
Therefore, it's entirely possible and more than likely agent orange would have been used in the 3rd Brigade sector during 1967.

Comments: I recall the first Starlight scopes to be issued to the 2nd ID came through the 702nd Maintenance Bn. in late 1966 or early 67. I opened the 1st shipment and our battalion had to check them out before issuing them to the DMZ units. They were state of the art at that time so all the Generals in the sector had to be given a demonstration.
At first we had few replacement batteries which was a drawback because the scopes ate up batteries like crazy. The scopes performed well specifically in blackout conditions along the DMZ. They worked best on moon lit nights.

Just found a Phoenix AZ TV station expose on AO done in 2012. Link for video is below.
It details use and insanely cavalier disposal of AO and other toxic chemicals in South Korea over many years. This and the lies, lost files, lost and paperwork, etc. that covered up AO use and disposal in South Korea for only God knows how long and how early.
The video shines a light on the mountain of lies the VA relies on to deny AO claims.
Please invest the time to watch the video then share it with VA employees stringing your AO claim out when you meet them face to face then share it with other vets filing such claims.
If you're not able to open the link to view the video do a Google search for Toxic Secrets 2012. The video is approx 35 min long

He began his AO claim in 2008 after they opened it to the vets who served in Korea during that period. I have put many other messages out there to find anyone who possibly may have known him or hung out with him. Michael worked in supply and I am not positive but may have been at Camp Casey. He had a real close buddy by the name of Dave, dark hair, bushy mustache wore dark glasses most of the time in the photos. He and Dave traveled back and forth to many areas of the DMZ for various reasons as told. Records I am told have been burned in a fire during that time so further proof of any kind is near impossible. If you are out there and knew Michael Scafuto, please get in touch with me. Comments: One Year There An Introduction
The free verse story-poems in One Year There are memories of the year 1968 in South Korea. They are memories of the soldiers assigned to my unit, located in a small outpost, hidden in the mountains of that country. These poems are snapshots of life on that nuclear missile base which was high on the North Korean list of targets. Indeed, we were always on the alert for possible infiltrators who had come into South Korea and who were expected to be heading toward our camp.
Although these poems can be looked at as a military war story, there are no battles or heroes or military campaigns. Rather, these poems will show life in a small army base in Korea during a very anxious and confusing time, always with the constant possibility of a full scale war.
That year was filled with news items about the two Koreas with the capture of the USS Pueblo by the North Koreans, her crew paraded through the news media, accused of being spies, then the killing of Robert Kennedy, and the killing of Martin Luther King. Also during that period, a team of 12 North Korean assassins got to within a few blocks of the South Korean presidential palace before being stopped.
It was my intention in writing these poems that the reader could come away with a better understanding of what life was like in 1968 at an army base in South Korea. It was also my intention in writing these poems that I would purge the phantoms that have been dwelling inside me since living One Year There.
The years 1966 through 1969 have been called the Second Korean War by military historians.
One Year There has received four 5Star Reviews by independent reviews.

Subject: LOOKING FOR MY BIRTH FATHER OR HIS FAMILY

Comments: Looking for my birth father.
The only information I have is DNA. I was born in 1963 - was told it was Spring, April, but that could be false. Likely conceived in Korea in the late Summer or early Fall of 1962. Was told my birth name was Kang, He Ja, but that could also be inaccurate.
Have had my DNA tested and discovered that I would have received the following ancestry from my father's side: majority Italian/Greek/Mediterranean basin; Scandanavian; Iberian Peninsula; trace amounts of British, Irish, Scot and Persian/Caucusus. Possibly Northern French.
Waited until my adoptive mother died to begin my search but have such little information.
Any help anyone could give me would be appreciated more than anyone could comprehend. I have three daughters, all in their child bearing years. It would be so helpful to them to have some medical history.
Thank you so much!

Comments: I was stationed Camp Kaiser Korea from April 1968 till April 1969. I was assigned to antitank platoon HHC 1st battalion M17th Infantry Division. Also did duty as company commander's driver. During this time two very serious things happened. Robert Porter was playing quick draw in our barracks and shot E4 England in the leg. The second incident happened when we were at artillery range firing the 106 antitank weapon. A PFC was loading one of the weapons and the weapon was fired before he could get his arm out of the way. If there is anyone who remembers these incidents please call or email me ASAP. Thank you, Gary A. Fisher

Comments: As of today after 8 years fighting the system I was approved for agent Orange in Korea. I served from 1966 to 1967 at Camp Kaiser Korea and witnessed spraying along fence lines and with the help from Buddy Letters and Pictures of storage of Barrels of defoliant I finally got my 100% service connection and all benefits. Special Thanks to Dam Hammond and others who sent me Buddy letters in support of my claim.
If you served in Korea on DMZ in or about 67 69 Fight VA for your claim

Comments: Once again, since 2013 searching for 1969-1970 Korea Vets who may have known my husband Michael Scafuto (Mikey Stache) from Brooklyn, NY. He was 8th Army, 7th Infantry worked in Supply, had a good buddy Dave who he hung with most of the time, dark hair, dark mustache always wore sunglasses. These two went into the villages and dmz areas together for many reasons, talked about using the empty AO containers to barbeque in. Michael contacted some eye infections, had them cut and treated but there is no records of it at all? My husband passed away in 2013. He had kidney cancer, lung cancer, type II diabetes and in the earlier years of him coming home i believe he had what they call Chloracne or something like that which put him in the VA hospital for a month. I wish I knew which camp he was in, but with all my searching, all and any paperwork i have, nothing states the camp name. I hear records from that period were all burned in a fire?? Is this possible? His friend Dave may not even be around anymore, so I am hoping to find at least one guy who may have known my husband, MICHAEL J. SCAFUTO Thank you ALL for you service....you are NEVER FORGOTTEN!
