He thought that they were given the Army Presidential Unit Citation, but perhaps there are others. He told me that he was on UN orders. His name is Arthur Sobczak.

Comments: On March 16th, 2019 my dad, Staff Sergeant John P. Amboian, 937th Field Artillery Battalion, 9th Army, passed away peacefully at the age of 87. He was pretty quiet about his time spent in Korea. However, the conflict ceased fire on his birthday, July 27th, 1953. It was quite a present to cease fire and plan on going home soon. He did tell us the transport trip to Korea was very rough seas and lots of soldiers were sea sick, but the trip home, the Pacific was smooth as glass.
It’s so sad that many of my dad’s generation are now gone along with the information about what really happened in Korea during the time he was there. Well, they were brave people going to a strange country, knowing very little of what they were heading into.
May God bless those soldiers both living and dead and also those soldiers still in Korea in harms way! Thank you for this website. It allows us to share and receive stories of what went on in that far away country. Sincerely,
Michael Amboian

He had maintained contact with a few who served with him so I thought this would be a way to let any of the Vets who remember him know of his passing, He was very proud to have served although he never told us much about what happened there.

He served from around 1952 to 1954, including time in Korea, his final unit while active was C Batt., 937th FA BN. His DD 214 says he was transferred to the Army Reserve after his stint on active duty, but I don't know how long he actually spent there.
I would love to hear from you if you have ANY information about him!

Comments: I just recently found this page. I enlisted in the National Guard in Fort
Smith in 1949. The unit was activated in 1950. I shipped to Korea with
Headquarters Battery and served seventeen months there. I was a
member
of the Battalion Survey Party and eventually became Chief of Party,
discharged with the rank of Sergeant First Class. Korea
has to be one of the coldest places in the world. When I shipped home I
went to Arkansas State College, Jonesboro, and never moved back to
my
home town. Haven't really had contact with anyone in the outfit since. I
am a retired college professor living in Pittsburg, Kansas.
Did anyone ever write a credible history of the 937th in Korea?

Comments: The Butler Center for Arkansas Studies of the Central Arkansas Library System has launched an initiative to document and preserve Arkansass role in the Korean War. For too long this aspect of our nations history has been forgotten or obscured by other events. Even worse, the sacrifice of our men and women in uniform has often been overlooked. We believe it is time to change that.
The Butler Center would like to solicit anyone's help in making sure that Arkansans who served in the war are not forgotten. We propose to honor our veterans by embarking on an aggressive campaign to seek out and preserve for future generations the documentary history of Arkansass role in the war. It is our intention to become Arkansass repository of information on the Korean War. To do this, we will need as much help as possible.
We are anxious to secure letters, photographs, diaries, etc. of Arkansass Korean War veterans. These pieces of history need to be preserved before they are lost. We are also very interested in conducting an oral history campaign to allow our veterans to share their memories with others. By interviewing and recording these heroes, we will enable future generations to actually hear from their past.
I am sure that everyone agrees that this is an important project; a project whose time has been long overdue. The Butler Center already serves as a storehouse of information on Arkansass role in the Civil War and World War II. Thus, it is only logical, and, indeed necessary, that we undertake the important task of preserving the documentary evidence of our countrys Forgotten War. We owe it not only to our veterans, but to future generations as well.
Please contact me if you can help us in our project.
Sincerely,
Brian Robertson
