Comments: I have just come across my dad's pics from Korea. He never talked about it much and I am trying to piece some things together. His name was Norman Gerald Kholos and he joined the Army National Guard i Sept 1950 I was told that he joined thinking he would be helping out in CA and found his behind in Korea. He ended up have a long military career, but we have been told what happened in Korea affected him till his dying day. I know that they went out somewhere doing whatever soldiers do and left cooks and others behind. When they came back it was a pretty gruesome scene and all were killed. Does anyone know about this? I also have pics.

Comments: My father-in-law, Cpl Melvin Smith, was assigned to Btry A, 143rd FA BN during the Korean War (51-53). He passed away recently and I am trying to acquire the unit insignia during the time of the Korean War to build a shadow box to accompany the flag the family received at the funeral.

Melvin told me on many times he performed sniper duty during his time in Korea and had nightmares until his last breath. We must ensure our younger generations do not forget the sacrifices
our troops made in Korea.

He looks very jewish w the nose and the hair and the skin. Stocky guy. We would like the former members of the 40th ID that we have established a archives here at the museum. We are making a major effort to preserved the photos, records, and papers of the members of the division and make them available to historians, researchers, and family members.

The current 40th ID HQ has already transferred all of their photos from WWII, the official 40th Signal Co combat camera set as well as other collections of the Division's history.

He recently received a POW medal but does not remember the details of any time in a POW camp. October 19, 1950 until July 18, 1952 dates of service. Basic Training was in Camp Pickett, Va. for 13 weeks before being shipped to Korea. He was there 9 months. His rank at time of d/c was SFC. He served in the Calvary 143rd. Div.
