Comments: Looking for anyone that may have served with my grandfather, Carlee Artz during his time in the Army 1951 - 1953. Or have knowledge of where his company would have been during the Korean War.
I had reqested his service papers, but only received his seperation document due to the fire.
He was assigned Service Battery 171st FA Bn APO 86. He received the Korean Service Medal with 1 bronze service star, United Nations Service Medal and 1 O/S Bar.
Sadly, my grandfather passes away from lung cancer in 2008. I know that he worked as a mechanic, servicing the trucks and also had lingering effects of frostbite on his toes due to the extreme cold.

Comments: Jerry served in 171 Field Artillery Batallion, 45th Division, Baker Company. 38th parallel. July 52 to Feb 53. Jerry told me some incredible stories of danger, valor, cold days and trying to keep his Lieutenants alive. Jerry received a Bronze Star, or, two. Once he had to rescue a wounded soldier by picking him up over his shoulder and carrying him away from the line of fire. A Captain was impressed with Jerry calling artillery fire co-ordinance resulting in direct hit killing North Korean soldiers firing at them. Jerry said he lost multiple Lieutenants from sniper fire because they did not heed his warning to keep their heads down in the bunker. Jerry explained having to run into a hardened bunker when artillery or bombing commenced on their position and I believe he remembered some casualties. these are some of the stories he told me. I wanted to interview him to write a proper history of he and his fellow soldiers experience. Unfortunately Jerry is in hospice at the VA Hospital in Columbia, Mo. this day of 11/13/2019 and preparing for his passing. If anyone knew Jerry I would love to correspond with you what you know about him and his units Korean War History.

much about his time in Korea, but we always knew he was proud of
his time there (He did talk a lot about his time on R&R in Tokyo).
I recently came across a stack of letters he had written to my
