HEADQUARTERS
7th INFANTRY DIVISION
APO 7
29 April 1953
GENERAL ORDERS
NUMBER 187

Section I

AWARD OF THE SILVER STAR.--By direction of the President, under the provisions of the Act of Congress, approved 9 July 1918 (WD Bu1. 43, I918), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Silver Star for gallantry in action is awarded to the following-named officer and enlisted man:

Second Lieutenant JOHN W. CONNORS, 02265280, Artillery, United States Army, a member of Battery C, 49th Field Artillery Battalion, distinguished himself by gallantry in action near Songhyon, Korea. On 5 March 1953, Lieutenant Connors, as a forward observer, accompanied an infantry combat patrol when the friendly patrol was suddenly ambushed by the enemy. As the ambush commenced, Lieutenant Connors fearlessly rushed from the support element to the front and delivered deadly and accurate fire upon the enemy forces. Without hesitation, Lieutenant Connors moved through the impact area to a vantage point completely exposed to the enemy fire and proceeded to rake the right flank with devastating protective fire, thus stopping the enemy. During the heavy bombardment of enemy mortar fire, Lieutenant Connors organized litter teams to evacuate the wounded and led them back to the friendly Main Line Of Resistance.

The gallantry displayed by Lieutenant Connors reflects great credit on himself and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service. Entered the Federal service from Massachusetts.

Comments: My father Lee O. Swatman, took a ship to Korea and arrived January 7th, 1952. He was on a 105 Howitzer, 49th Field Artillery, 7th Infantry Division. He was stationed at Fort Lewis, near Seattle Washington. He remembers leaving out of Pier 91 in Seattle, where as they are pulling away... Someone thought it humorous to sing Harbor Lights. The trip over took 17 days to get to Inchon and then taken by boat and dropped off on the southern tip of Korea and taken by train up north to the battle area. He remembers seeing artillery and wondering if one of them... had his name on it. For the year of 1952, he was at the front line DMV, west line of the demarkation. He was just over the ridge, half mile-mile from what is known as PORK CHOP HILL. They were just starting to go after it, when he left. It took him 21 days to get back to Washington state. He said when he got off the boat, he remembered the Red Cross there, selling coffee for 25 cents.

He now lives in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho and is 84 years old.. would LOVE to connect with anyone that was in 49th Field Artillery, 7th Infantry Div.

He passed away last year and although he was very proud of his service in Korea, he
didn't talk specifically about where he was or what he did. I do know that he was a
sergeant in the 7th infantry division, 49th art btn. during 1951-52. I have some papers
and his DD214 but don't I know how to read them. I have many nice old photos of him
and his buddies. Thinking of him especially during this 60th Armistice Anniversary, and
the events in Washington next week.

Comments: Looking for any information about my father or his unit. He told me when I was younger that he went to Korea at the outset, spent time in Pusan Harbor training, was assigned to a Regimental Combat Team, spent a number of weeks surrounded by the enemy in the winter and had supplies air dropped in and ended up at the Yalu river.

His DD214 states he was with the 49th FA BN "C" Btry as a Cheif Artillery Survey Specialist. He received the Korean Service Medal with Silver Star. Was promoted to SGT in Aug 1950 and SFC in June 1951. He entered the Army in 1948 and served in Korea from June 1950 to October 1951, as far as I can tell.

He mentioned some things about being cutoff and surrounded for a number of weeks during the winter; and being part of a Regimental Combat Team; I think RCT 31. The problem is that as far as I can tell the 49th FA BN was not part of RCT 31 and may or may not have been involved in the Battle of Chosin Resevoir.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Section 28 Most Significant Duty Assignment: Sv Btry 49th PA BN APO7

Again not sure what the PA is but Im assuming Service Battery 49th PA Battalion APO 7. I know APO 7 was Korea

His DD214 states his MOS was 3835 Supply so I not sure if it fits with being in artillery. Can anybody shed some light on this or point me in the right direction.

Comments: My daughter just finished interviewing her Grandfather, Howard Thomas about his military career for a school report on Veterans Day. He was in the Able battery of the 49th Field Artillery Battalion in Korea from 1950-51.
He never spoke of Korea as I was growing up so I learned quite a bit too.
He has a type of yearbook of the 49th FA with names, pictures and a history of the battalion. Does anyone remember Roy or Ray Gleghorn from Bakersfield CA? He is the only name Dad ever mentioned, maybe because I was then traveling to Bakersfield.
Dad doesn't use computers but I would love to relay any messages you all might have.
