Comments: I have been asked to conduct research in order to verify wounds received by a Soldier during the Battle at Heartbreak Ridge, the Kumwa Province, September, 1952. The Soldiers name is Lawrence Clifford Hoyt. PFC Hoyt served with HQ Battery, 981st Field Artillery, 40th DIV. He received shrapnel wounds and was treated by a medic on scene, and returned to duty. PFC Hoyt informed his commander, LT Lawrence Silva, not to inform his next of kin of his injury. His mother had just passed away and he did not want to alarm his family and bring additional stress. Therefor, PFC Hoyt was never entered on any casualty report.
I have travelled to the National Archives in Maryland in order to review Commanders Reports from that specific time frame and assigned unit. I have confirmed names on reports of Battle Buddy's whom PFC Hoyt served with. I have also viewed PFC Hoyt's name on an "Assigned Gains" report. Some of the Soldiers PFC Hoyt served with are Richard Decker, James Felty, Lawrence Gilbert.
My objective is to corroborate PFC Hoyt's story with any documentation that puts PFC Hoyt on scene during the time and place of the Battle of Heartbreak Ridge. If I can locate any such documentation, or confirm first hand verification, I will submit his name to the Department of The Army through the Veterans Administrative Bureau for the Purple Heart award. PFC Hoyt is still with us, and is 88 years old. He is a member of the Castile, New York American Legion.
Any help in my endeavor would be greatly appreciated.

CSM Mark H. Wilson

Comments: I was with Battery B of the 981st FA BN. in the 40th Inf. Div. from July 1952 until June 1953. I was just a young recruit PFC so I donot remember to much. Our unit was in Kumwah Valley. I remember that I worked on the forward observer team on Heartbreak Ridge. We just lived in a small bunker. I do not remember anything about the time that I was there because I spent most of my time in our observation bunker until I got my orders to leave. I started recalling somethings after I made the Kansas Honor Flight out of Wichita, Kansas in June of this year.

Comments: My Dad, George A, Rader Sr was a Sergeant on a 155MM gun crew. He was with the
California Army National Guard. He deployed from Camp Cooke, CA. We lived in Orcutt,
CA at the time. I was only 3 or 4 years old when he came home and I remember it well.
I remember him saying his gun crew could out fire all the other gun crews. I remember
him saying his outfit would move to the front lines fire and retreat to their previous
firing line and the infantry would catch worst of the retaliation. I am trying to find
anyone who remembers him or knew which battery he was in. He passed in 2007 and he
always said the Korean War Vets never got the recognition they deserved.
Thanks,

We would like the former members of the 40th ID that we have established a archives here at the museum. We are making a major effort to preserved the photos, records, and papers of the members of the division and make them available to historians, researchers, and family members.
The current 40th ID HQ has already transferred all of their photos from WWII, the official 40th Signal Co combat camera set as well as other collections of the Division's history.
If you can get this out to your members, we would appreciate it.

His paperwork says Btry B 981 FA BN. I assume this means 981st Field Artillery? He is deceased. He served in Korean Jan? 52 to Oct 53. Would this be the right battalion? He was a cannoneer from his paperwork. Never researched anything like this, so any info is helpful. Would like to find out what battles he may have been involved in.

Comments: Today is the 52d anniversary of the Korean War truce, which began at 2200 local time. Our gun section chiefs were required to turn in their firing mechanisms at 2145 to ensure there was no violation on our part. However, the Chinese artillerymen had no such requirement, and we took a lot of incoming fire during that last 15 minutes.
On 11 Nov 03, I addressed a third-grade class on my experiences during the war. On 5 Apr 05, I spoke to two eleventh-grade history classes on the same subject. Both were well-received. Would welcome contact with any members of Battery B during the period October '52 - November '53.
