Comments: My dad, PVT-1 William Heys, spent 2 years in the Army and all we have is his DD-214.
It says: 1844 BTRY C 11 FA BN as his most significant duty assignment.
He was in from Nov '51 to Nov "53.

We would love to get more info on where he went and what his unit did.
Maybe even learn more about his whereabouts.
I would love to hear from his buddies.

Comments: From US State Dept. History: Ambassador in Korea (Muccio) to the Secretary of State, in plain text, Seoul, June 25, 1950. The following announcement is being made over mission radio at 1pm today, "Stand by for a special announcement. WVTP has been authorized by the Ambassador to make the following announcement: At 4 o'clock this morning North Korean armed forces began unprovoked attacks against defense positions of the Republic of Korea at several points along the 38th parallel. Fighting is now in progress.... Korean defense forces are taking up prepared positions to resist Northern aggression. Both Korean officials & security forces are handling the situation calmly & w/ ability. There is no reason for alarm. As yet it cannot be determined whether the Northern Communists intended to precipitate all out warfare. New developments will be reported regularly over this station. Please keep tuned to WVTP. (US) Mission personnel are advised to travel about as little as necessary. The Ambassador requests that Mission personnel remain at home or at their posts, as the situation may dictate. our next announcement will be heard at 3:00 pm." info repeated to CINCFE ( Gen. Mac Arthur) Note: Advance copy to Mr. Rusk, 12 midnight June 24 (14 hr. difference Korea- USA over international date line). Relayed to Army Dept. & Tokyo 1 am 6/25/50 CWO

Comments: 4:00 am, Korea time, the Communist North Koreans launched their attack on South Korea. The Communist would feed the false story that the northern attack was in response to an attack from the southern forces. That fake news would be debunked when the US & ROK forces broke out of the Pusan Perimeter to coincide with the Inchon Invasion in the fall of 1950 & captured Pyongyang, the Capitol of North Korea. There the US forces found abandoned Communist documents of the plan of the attack of South Korea. The ROK forces fought gallantly but could not prevail against the T-34 Russian built tanks, Yak-9 Russian aircraft & the heavy artillery of the North Koreans. The South Koreans had none of these heavy weapons. In fact, the ROK forces of the South Korean Army were denied these weapons by the US because the US feared the south would launch an attack on the north. The ROK forces were mainly armed with US M-1 rifles & some Japanese rifles confiscated from the Japanese Army at the end of World War II. The North Koreans drove for Seoul as one of their primary targets. The North Koreans also did an amphibious operation on the east coast of south Korea near Kangnung with the idea of driving for Wonju. I believe that they were unopposed in that operation. In spite of stiff opposition & an occasional minor setback, the North Korean attacks were making progress.

Comments: From the CIA's analysis of the "Current Capabilities of the Northern Korean Regime" 19 June 1950:
The " Democratic Peoples Republic" of northern Korea is a firmly controlled Soviet satellite that exercises no independent initiative & depends entirely on the support of the USSR for existence. Although the northern & southern (armed) forces are nearly equal in terms of combat effectiveness, training & leadership, the northern Koreans possess a superiority in armor, heavy artillery & aircraft. Thus, northern Korea's armed forces ... have a capability for attaining limited objectives in short-term military operations against southern Korea, including the capture of Seoul.

Keywords: The North has armor, heavy artillery & aircraft. The South has none of these.

Comments: My memory of those days leading up to the Korean War is that things were quiet at Camp Hakata on the island of Kyushu, Japan. We (school aged) "Army Brats" were let out of school for the summer, so it was back to our main preoccupation - searching for Japanese arms that were hidden by the Japanese military before the surrender in 1945. There were always rumors that the Japanese wanted to fight to the bitter end, so they buried a large supply of weapons to continue the fight. A hidden supply was rumored to be somewhere on our base. During World War 2 Camp Hakata was a Japanese Navy seaplane base and surrounded by a forest of trees over on the dependent housing area side of the base - ideal for hiding a supply of weapons.

Comments: A little research has shown me that there were enormous challenges to the establishment of the Republic of Korea (ROK) under a civil government duly elected by the people.
The problems are outlined in Ambassador John Muccio's 1971 interview that is found @ trumanlibrary.gov & also listed in pamphlets @ the Center for Military History @ Carlisle Barracks, Penn. The ROK got off the ground in 1948 w/ the election of S. Rhee. The challenges included rampant inflation, the difficult task of transferring over from US Military Government to an elected government, internal subversion, external threats, lack of practical political experience & a very shaky economy. As Ambassador Muccio stated, when he arrived in 1948 there was an open border at the 38th parallel & commerce was exchanged there, but when S. Rhee was elected as president of the newly
formed ROK, the border was closed off immediately by the North Koreans. The true cost of all those American lives is that the ROK has survived 74 years.

They met w/ 3 North Korean emissaries & accepted 4 copies of the "Democratic Front's" document, but the NKs refused to accept the UN documents from Gaillard. Gaillard remained in Paekchong overnight. The "DF" document clearly stated that the UN Commission would not be permitted to participate in the unification of Korea.

Comments: Late in the day 6/10/50, North Korea broadcast a message to the UN Commission that North Korea was interested in meeting with the UN rep. for the purpose of delivering to them the North Korean's proposal for unifying the whole of Korea. Dr. Singh of the UN Commission accepted the offer of receiving that written proposal. Dr. Singh agreed to send a rep. from the UN Commission, John P. Gaillard to Yohyun, to meet a North Korean rep. In turn Mr. Gaillard would give the North Koreans a copy of the UN General Assembly's Korean resolution of Oct. 21, 1949. As stated, "The sole purpose of the UN Commission is to carry out the mandate of the UN General Assembly, aiming at unification, which is the fervent desire of all true Koreans".

Comments: From US State Dept. History
At its 28th meeting on Friday, 9 June 1950, the UN Commission on Korea broadcast a radio message to North Korea appealing to North Korea to contact the UN Commission that was stationed in Seoul. North Korea, for its part was broadcasting from Pyongyang that the North wanted to unite all of Korea, but the implication was unification under the terms of North Korea. The UN Commission in South Korea was not allowed to enter North Korea but truly wanted to discuss reunification with North Korea. North Korea's broadcast was exclusively to the 2 year old South Korean government. North Korea did not recognize the UN Commission. This war of words continued until 25 June 1950.

I would like to know if any of you have ever heard of him. His Name was Merlin H. Perry and he retired as a Lt. Colonel. He took part in battles of Kum River, Taejon, Nantong, and at one time was within 10 miles of the Yalu river. Also, he helped repulse the Chinese offensive on the first of January. For his Gallantry, he was awarded an air medal with 12 Oak leaf clusters, and two distinguished flying crosses. The only reason I know this is due to some old newspaper clippings my mom has. Apparently, he never spoke of these medals. If anyone knows of my "pa" or has any HX on him, I would greatly appreciate any insite on him. He passed prior to my birth and I know little of him other than he was a great man and looks and acts like me.

Comments: I discovered this site while trying to learn about a soldier who died in Korea, Pvt. Edwin N. Love. I don't know if any one who visits here knew him or has any memories of Pvt. Love but that really isn't important to me just now. I learned today that Pvt. Love was a young African American man who lost his life serving in the Army during the Korean conflict. I wanted to write this note and say that I am truly enriched for having learned of him and his contribution. Pvt. Edwin N. Love has a street named after him in Yonkers NY and when my girlfriend rescued the beautiful cast iron street sign which was about to be "retired", I began my search to discover who Edwin Love was.

To his family, his friends who may believe he is lost in our history. Please know that Edwin N. Love is remembered, and I will pass on this small fact of our local Westchester NY history to all who care to listen.

Peace and Blessings to all who read this and to all who have a loved one who served and made the ultimate sacrifice.

Comments: I', looking for any information about my late Uncle; Robert Edward Duncan. He had recieved a dear John Leter from a Pauline while in Japan. My mother Alberta (Duncan)Jones, Roberts sister died in 2003 and I have just stumbled upon letters written during his stay in Japan to my late Grandfather, Albert Orne Duncan. If anyone knows of anyone who served in the 11th Battery A/B with my late uncle, I would love to hear about it. My Uncle was a PARATROOPER.

Comments: I am the current battalion historian for 2-11 FAR. I am seeking as much information as possible on the 11th FA during post WWII Japan and the Korean War. I am especially interested in commanders, accounts of battles, geographic locations and times, personal and unit awards, and units supported. Any information or direction to resources that could help me would be appreciated.

Comments: I have a family mystery to solve - my dad died and we found papers and photos from his time in Korea. Among them were many legal papers concerning his "marriage" to a Japanese woman. We've even heard that there is a "son" involved! Needless to say, we are quite curious. From the photos, it seems dad had many buddies - does anyone remember him????Any infowould be great.

Comments: I am looking for information about my uncle named PV2 Vincent Lackman from Pennsylvania. He was a member of 11th FA Bn (B Battery I think) and he was captured and then killed on 20 Jul 1950 I believe somewhere around Taejon.

After the war, my grandmother was told that he was marched and tortured after his capture, but that is all she can remember. Does anyone remember Vinnie? I'd appreciate any info.

Thanks,
Capt Steve Hillard, USAF
