Comments: During my time in Korea '53-'54, the 955 BN was commanded by Lt. Col. David Easterday and then by jovial Lt. Col. Joel Stephens, who later was asst. football coach at West Point. I arrived 10 days after armistice was declared, but still had to spend 1 week out of every month on a frigid mountain-top OP peering at Chinese movements just across the DMZ, with Korean Army GIs as our pals cooking kimshi every day. Our three 155mm firing batteries were scattered over several pine-clad valleys near Kumwha, as lovely as Vermont. One of them was commanded by Lt. James St. Clair, who was awarded DSC for his actions when the BN had to pull back during the Battle of the Kumsong Salient just before armistice. The award ceremony was a true bit of Army pageantry with mountains looming up behind. Read my memoir A Corkscrew Life, available on Amazon.

Comments: Hello, my grandfather Morris Kiefer served in B Battery 955 Field Artillery Battalion in Korea. I am currently wanting to make a shadow box of his medals and decorations, and also want to include his service dates. I asked him but his response was Son that was 65 years ago, all I remember is it was warm when I got there and cold when I left. I have a copy of his DD-214 but the date is 23 January 1953, which would have been when he redeployed home. Any ideas on where I can obtain this information. I've scoured the Internet and have come up empty handed. Also, anyone who served in B Battery during this time, if you can provide information that would be great.

Comments: Colonel Joseph Francis Schuman, U.S. Army retired, passed away at age 84 on July 17, 2013, at Silver Oak Manor, Livermore, California, after a long illness. Joe was born at home on March 25, 1929, on the South Side of Chicago, where he spent his youth and graduated from Hirsch High School in 1947. Desiring a military career since a young age, Joe attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, graduating as a member of the Class of 1951, and beginning his service as an artillery officer. After graduating West Point, Joe volunteered for combat service in Korea, where he earned the Bronze Star with V for valor, serving with the 955th Field Artillery. His extensive military career included assignments at the Citadel, as a research engineer at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and with the 4th Armor Division, Artillery, in West Germany. Further assignments included nuclear warhead delivery systems production at the Institute of Nuclear Studies, then located at Fort Bliss, Texas, and Chief of Staff at Cam Ranh Bay, South Vietnam, earning a second Bronze Star. Joes last military assignment involved fielding an anti-ballistic system at SAFSCOM, Redstone Arsenal, in Huntsville, Alabama. During his military career, Joe was awarded the Legion of Merit three times.
In 1960, Joe graduated from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, with Masters Degrees of Science in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering and in Instrumentation Engineering. He also earned a Masters Degree in Administrative Science from the University of Alabama, Huntsville, in 1973. After his military retirement in 1973, Joe worked as an Associate Division Leader of Manufacturing and Precision Engineering at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory until his retirement in 1984.
Always devoted to his family, Joe is survived by his wife Clare (Schirrmacher) Schuman, who he married on September 19, 1953, in Chicago at Saint Francis de Paula Catholic Church shortly after his return from Korea. Also surviving Joe are his two children, John Schuman of Livermore and Ann (Robert) Gegan of Davis, grandsons Joseph, Ross, and Michael Gegan, and his siblings Agnes Schwarz of Downers Grove, Illinois, and Donna Gamble of Oceanside, California, as well as many nieces and nephews. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Cecilia (Bruenderman) Schuman, and three brothers, Charles, Paul, and George Schuman.
Visitation was held at Callaghan Mortuary in Livermore on July 24th between 5 and 8 pm, with internment at 11 am on July 25th at the Davis Cemetery in Davis, California.

Comments: I have been trying to learn more about my fathers military service. His name was Sgt. Neil Rossi. He passed away in 1980 while I was too young to have asked all the questions I would have liked.
I was looking through some old photos, and found a picture of him while serving in the Korean war. He was standing next to an army jeep with a spare tire cover with the following wording:
Charlie Battery 955 FA Red Legged Devil
In the middle of the tire cover was what appears to be a picture of a horn with a 14 above the horn.
I was wondering if you could give me a little history about who and what this unit was, and perhaps if they knew my father? If not, could you point me to someone or someplace that could.

Rank: CPL Medical Technician (Medic) attached to 955 F. A. Battalion B. Battery
Captain Paul Nelson was a replacement for the Battalion Captain that was my first Commander of Battalion B Battery. I also remember serving with Lt. Burchett.
I also recall a Medic in our Battalion Aid Station whose first or last name ended with HEINZ.
The Dentist in Battalion Aid Stration was from Texas. Any of you out there remember me, Edward Harvey?
Also in the B Battery, we had a buddy that played the banjo for Bill Monroe in Nashville, Tenn.
Also we had an actioneer that would auction off the strangest items found on a battlefield.
Any body remember that the Medics had to put out the rat poision all around our perimeter each time we moved our position?
Also, one of the Medics being rotated from Battery B had last name of BELL. I think he was from the state of Iowa, or Illiois.
Another of the Medics had a last name HUDDLESTON.
Qne of the ammo loaders was from Dearborn, MI.
During a lull, I boxed with a black ammo loader from Detroit. Are you out there.
I am just remmbering a black man named Francis that work with loading those 155M.M. shells in the Howitzers.
