Can't rememeber all the words to "Dogface Soldier" but do recall having to sing it before and after the movie. "Audie Murphy Sir" always rang loud and clear for months following its showing. Also reminded me of the day we stood in full dress for hours listening to the bells toll for JFK. I'm not ashamed to say thatrolled down my cheeks as I said our goodbyes to my commander and chief.Every man in our unit felt the grief of the loss but also witnessed the pride of serving one that was so loved by our German friends. I feel sorry for the young men today that because of the loss of the draft will never know the comradery and discipline the army provided.

Comments: I have recently been given a book with photographs that you may find to be of interest. A close friend's father has recently passed on and left a "yearbook" behind that is of the Third Battallion, Fourth Marine Regiment, Third Marine Division-Fleet Marine Force Pacific, dates are August 1953--August 1954.
I have been entrusted me to investigate this book's worth, perhaps only as memorabilia and to find out if there is anyone interested in its contents. The book has been put away in a box for many years and is still in good condition. The book is full of yearbook style photos and names of people who may have some interest in them. It includes candid shots of everyday battalion life and has some personal notes/photos from Gen. Pepper and Gen. Risely. Also, "The Striking 9th", Fox and Dog companies.
If you know of anyone that may be interested in this or could perhaps lead me to a website or forum in which the book could be discussed, I would greatly appreciate it and be very much in debt to you.

2nd Lt. George Sam Buck, a member of the 39th
Field Artillery Battalion assigned as Forward
Observer to Company K, 15th Infantry Regiment,
distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry and
outstanding courage above and beyond the call of
duty in action against the enemy. Company K was
committed to the defense of "Outpost Harry", a
strategically valuable position, when the enemy
launched a reinforced regimental sized attack
against the company. 2nd Lt. Buck moving about the
outpost units while constantly exposing himself to
direct enemy fire effectively called for defensive
fire from the supporting indirect fire units.
Learning that the enemy had reached the trenches
he returned to the company command post on the
outpost. 2nd Lt. Buck took a position just inside
the command bunker and along with the company
commander and executive officer, they repulsed
several attempts by the enemy to seize the command
post. The enemy threw grenades into the bunker,
seriously wounding the company commander and
mortally wounding the executive officer, both
being knocked unconscious. Lt. Buck although
seriously wounded remained at the bunker entrance
protecting those inside the bunker and rendered
first aid to the company commander. Repeatedly the
enemy attempted to enter the bunker only to be
denied entrance by the deadly carbine fire from
Lt. Buck. He remained in radio contact with
support units. When it became apparent that the
position was untenable, he called for artillery
fire upon his position, stopping the enemy
advance. The enemy threw more grenades into the
bunker knocking Lt. Buck down, this time wounding
him in the leg and arm. On two more occasions when
enemy soldiers stepped into the doorway to fire,
Lt. Buck killed them, denying the enemy control of
the command post and saving the life of his fellow
soldiers. Finding that his carbine was jammed as
the enemy entered the bunker, he wiped blood from
his wounds on to his face and lay still beside the
two unconscious company officers. When the K
Company officers started to regain consciousness,
the enemy shot them both, killing the executive
officer and again wounding the company commander.
Reinforcements drove the enemy from the outpost
and not until Lt. Buck’s Artillery forward
observer replacement arrived, did Lt. Buck leave
the outpost. 2Nd L

Comments: I served with a Battery A, 2nd Bn 39th FA in Schweinfurt, Germany from Sepember 1978 until February 1980. The 2/39 was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division. We were at Ledward Barracks in Schweinfurt. There we lived in the same barracks that the German Army had used before and during World War II. While in Battery A, I worked as a unit armor, supply clerk and commander's driver.

Comments: Would be interested in hearing from anyone who served in the 39th Field Artillery Battalion (especially Headquarters and Headquarters Battery)between May 1953 and August 1954. Would like to know if anyone remembers Orie B. Agnew from A Battery or George R. Ralph from Service Battery. At the time I left, I was the battalion sergeant major. Just a few comrades I remember are Jim Bowles, Lt. Peter Mavraides, Major Armand M. Kolesar, Ralph Joch and others. I have many photographs from the period.
