Comments: My grandfather, Pfc. William "Bill" Gallagher was in 17th FAB, Battery B. He was wounded in Chipri on October 13th, 1951. He remembers his Sergeant being Sgt. Mitchell. He has many pictures of his unit, and wants to put the pictures online when we figure out how to do it. He manned the 8" Howitzer and said he was with a great bunch of guys. When it was time to go home he ( there were eleven guys but only room for ten to leave on the vehicle ) was the guy who drew the short straw. He did however see his buddies one last time. As he was getting off the boat to check in to the hospital, his pals were getting on to go home. He said they were so happy to see he made it out of there. He bunked with DJ or CJ Johnson, from Greenville, South or North Carolina. If your out there Mr. Johnson, send us an e-mail at ajcj81@cox.net Thank you.

Comments: With Btry C 17th FA Bn. July 1949 - Dec 1951
Went to Korea as 1st Sgt of C Btry and when I came home in Dec '51 was the Battery Cmdr. In Nov '51 Capt Blue (Ark Nat Guard) arrived as my replacement. After turning the Btry over to him I was sent to the British Commonwealth Div as laison awaiting orders home. After a few days I got a call to return to the Btry as Capt Blue and his driver, Taylor had either been killed or captured, which I did immediately and the Bn Cmdr told me to go up to the front line and talk with the infantry to find out what happened. I did this the next day and they described seeing the jeep with Capt Blue go down the road past the front line with the 8" howitzer following. They saw the howitzer stop and turn around and come back but the jeep dissapeared on down the road not to be seen again. We later learned that Blue was killed and Taylor was captured. He was eventually released. After a few more weeks another replacement arrived for me and I came home in December. I spent a total of 16 months in Korea. I believe that I was the last of the original ones who went to Korea with the Bn. to come home. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone with information about this time period to get in touch with me. I retired as a major in 1961 when I was given the choice of either going back to Korea or retiring. I'm 82 years old and still going strong and enjoying every day that the Lord lets me live. Best wishes to ALL L. B. Scott
