Comments: My Dad was a school-trained surveyor. Originally from Brooklyn, NY, he now lives in Norfolk, VA. He was in Korea from mid 1950 through late 1951. I'm writing this because he still has trouble turning on his computer! He plans to attend a reunion in asheville, NC this Sept. The only other unit member that I remember is the late John Mills. I seem to recall that his CO was then Capt. Mason J. Young. We saw Col Young's photo in the NY Daily News on his own son's graduation from the Point. My Dad, who would really like to hear from his cronies, can be reached through me at totheab@msn.com

Comments: My brother Gene D. Tomkins was in Korea from Feb. 1951 through Jan. 1952. He was on the Han River with the Mississippi National Guard building pontoon bridges across the river. He was involved in the flash flooding and was in the Spring and Summer-Fall Offensives. He had 2 Bronze Stars for his involvement there. He died in Sept. 1999 of heart problems.

I am his sister and would like to hear from anyone who might have known him or been with him at that time. He never talked much about his experiences, except about the time when the orders had come through for the UN to retreat, and everyone - infantry and artillery - retreated south of the river. He was left behind to blow up a bridge after they had sandbagged it and set the dynamite. It turned out that after he got back to the main camp, which was 16 miles south of the bridge, that the order had come through for the infantry to advance and engage the enemy in hand-to-hand combat. The infantry held them across the river. This would have been sometime in the spring possibly.

Gene was in RA, a Corporal, and in Dog Company. He was with the Btry. "B" 9th AAA Gun Bat.

Comments: When 3rd Division left Ft. Benning, GA in 1950 to go to Korea, it took the 999th Armored Field Artillery Battalion with it because its own 155 howitzer battalion was already in Korea. The 999th was a self propelled 155 howitzer outfit. Because the division was under strenght, most of it was sent into the mountains of Japan where soldiers from the Republic of Korea army were added to bring it up to fighting strength. After the 3rd had been in Korea for a while, its own 155 howitzer battalion rejoined the division, and the 999th became Corp troops.

I went into Korea with the 999th in November, 1950 and was rotated out in December, 1951
