Comments: I am seeking information on my uncle who served with the 21st. Infantry, 24th. Division.
He died of injuries received in battle and I never had the honor of knowing him. His records were destroyed in the fire at the records center in St. Louis as best I can find out.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Here is the information I have.

Enlisted Army 1940.
21st. Infantry, 24th. Division.
Trained in Hawaii.
Was in New Guinea for unknown time.
Sent to Philippines by way of Australia.
Bronze Star posthumously,May 10,1954(?), for meritorious achievement in ground operations against the enemy in the Pacific theater.
Wounded May 27,1945 in an artillery attack in Mintal, Mindanao, in the Davo area. Died May 31,1945. Received Purple Heart.
Was initially buried in grave 290 at US armed forces cemetary, Talamo #1, near Davo, Mindanao. Later moved to grave #7025 US armed forces cemetary, Leyte #1. Later moved to his hometown for permanent burial.

Comments: Friends of Doug Haag should know that in June 2012 his remains were found by a
South Korean military team looking for their own war dead. Doug was found in a grave
with the remains of another missing soldier, and a preliminary identification was made
based on his 2nd Lt. insignia that was recovered.

Subsequent DNA analysis in Honolulu, Hawaii confirmed his identity.

On June 1, 2013, Doug was buried with full military honors in Cave Hill Cemetery, in his
home town of Louisville KY. He was laid to rest at the cenotaph placed by his mother
after he vanished during the battle of Chonui more than 60 years ago. Present were
Doug's sister and brother and many family members as well as several friends. His
obituary may be viewed here (at least for now):
http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/louisville/obituary.aspx?pid=165037676

We are personally indebted to the Barker brothers and all members of the Korean War
Project who helped us first locate convincing evidence that he had been killed in battle
(and not imprisoned) back in 1997, more than a decade before his remains were
actually found. Your kindness and dedication to these forgotten veterans has made
an immense, positive impact on our family. We cannot thank you enough.

Doug's gravestone reads in part:
He stands in the unbroken line of patriots who have died that freedom might live and
grow and increase its blessings.

Comments: My grandfather fought in Korea as a mortar man. He never talked
about it much until after I returned from Basic training. He
told me of the many frustrations that he had when after days of
fighting to take a hill, they would be told to abandon it.

I know prior to leaving for Korea, he did some kind of training
at Ft Riley, KS. At that time, he talks about a big flood that
happened in that area and having to stay in tents.

Any information about this childhood hero of mine would much
appreciated. He is currently not doing very well, and it won't
be much longer before all I have is his history.

Comments: Any information regarding my father's company or
fellow soldiers would be most appreciated. He is
alive and well but disheartened, as many of you are,
that all service records were destroyed in the fire.

Comments: My Father is looking for a friend that he knew named
Dixie Wingard.

Dixie Wingard

Norm Smith is looking for an MP friend of his from
about 60-years ago in Seattle, WA. Norm only remembers
him as Dixie Wingard. Dixie is the middle person in
the left photo. Norm is on the right and he does not
remember the name of the man on the left. The right
photo is of Dixie, presumably in Basic Training. Norm
believes Dixie went to Korea.

If you are or know of Dixie Wingard, Norm would greatly
appreciate a call. Thank you.

Comments: My father, Hugh S. Carpenter served with the 21st Infantry Regiment K.
Company in Korea from 1951 to 1952 in the area known as The Iron
Triangle. My dad has no computer, so he asked me to help him. He
recently has fallen ill and is receiving treatment at the local VA hospital.
My dad was on Hill 364 overlooking Kumsong Province on Jan. 23,
1952. Shortly thereafter my father was wounded in action from enemy
shrapnel and was E-VACed to the 25th Medical Evacuation Hospital in
Taegu Korea. I had early thought my father was sent to Japan, but this
is not the case and an error on my part. Needless to say, my father
never received his Purple Heart due to loss of chain of command, for
upon returning to the front lines his previous unit was disbanded and
he was re-assigned to the 40th Replacement Co. Division of the
California National Guard. It would be a great thrill for my father to
reconnect with any of the buddies he fought along side, some of their
names are Castanga, Spero, Esposito, Dvoreck, Everly, Bano, and Lt.
Wolfe.
Their spelling may be incorrect, for that I apologize. Any information
would be most greatly appreciated.
