Comments: Comments: Looking for information on my father, Jack Phillip Carter. We were always very proud of our father's service and ran the courses with him and enjoyed the base life, but when he retired it was no longer the focus of our lives. We kids were not aware of the many medals he had received when we were younger- he always had a chest full of ribbons etc- it seemed par for the course. As we have gone through pictures preparing for the funeral display, we learned he had :
Army Of Occupation Medal and Japan Clasp, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal with a Bronze Star (looks like a date of 2-19-52), Purple Heart , the United Nations Service Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge First Awards
We were totally unaware of those and immediately called the Army to see if they could tell us when, where and why they awarded- only to be told a fire had occurred and the records with that information was destroyed.
It was mentioned the CIB notation in his papers was significant. We know little about his service because he didn’t talk much about it.

Dad's service record is unusual as he went into the CA Reserves first and then the National Guard in 47- spending most of 47 in service. Was out until Sept 1950 when he was called back when he then spent one week at Fort Knox Kentucky, then shipped back to Camp Cook California and then apparently went to Korea. We recently received some of his records from the Army but there is a blank for the time period from Nov 1950 until 1953 when he was regular Army and went overseas to Germany and France. We know nothing about his time in Korea and about where he was and what happened that those badges and medals were awarded.

We are interested in:
What specifically qualified him for any of these awards?
Were some unit awards?
What battles did he participate in?

He was drafted October 1950, spent one week at Fort Knox Kentucky, then shipped to Camp Cook California and spent 2 years in the Infantry including 10 months in Japan and 6 months in Korea. He received the Army Of Occupation Medal and Japan Clasp, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal with a Bronze Star, the United Nations Service Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge First Award

Comments: Looking for members of Headquarters Company, 223d Infantry. Anyone who remembers Tor A. Nilsen? He was from Eastport, Maine and likely with Pioneer and Ammunition Platoon or Anti-Tank Mine Platoon. MOS 1729 I think would place him there. There is a nice certificate for award of the Combat Infantry Badge dated 24 November 1952. He made Corporal in January 1953 and was discharged April 1953, so my guess is his year in Korea was early 1952 - early 1953.

I have dozens of letters he wrote home in which he mentions photos of his fellow soldiers from Company E. I am going through each letter and plan to create a tribute book for him with the letters and any photos I can locate.

But I'm guessing he was probably a Private or PFC while in Korea in 53. His name is Jimmy Graham. His state side unit was the 69th infantry and I think but am not sure that he was in the 223rd while in korea. All I know for sure is that he was in easy company . After the war he was in the the nuclear program in the Atol islands. I think it was called Castle Bravo. He is in poor health but has a very vivid memory. He has shared some of his war stories

If you know him or can tell us the whereabouts of any of these men, we would greatly appreciate it!

My Uncle fought on the front lines and then was taken off and given a position as a cook in the mess hall.

His unique twist of southern seasoning, earned him favor in the eyes of his superiors and he advanced in rank rather swiftly for his dedicated service, and delicious meals he prepared for his fellow soldiers.

He is an amazing person and I would love to be able to share the whereabouts of any of these names he has given me to inquire about. Please contact me if you have any information to share. He is an Alabama native.

Comments: i still haven't gotten my DD214 from st louis. I
thought we earned about 6 bronse stars, if anyone
knows. Please tell me, so I can put then on my CIB.

Keywords: was from 508 Airborne Ft Benning Ga, straight legged
assigned to the 40th by way of camp stoneman, calif,
then on SS WALKER to Korea. The only people I
remember are Noah Baldwin, from Pensacola, fl, and
Henry Batiste, from NY. I Was a BAR man, was on PUNCH
BOWL, LUKES CASTLE, SAND CASTLE, CHOWAN VALLEY,
CHUNCHON, HEARTBREAK AND BLOODY RIDGE. I made Msgt
field 1st. But records were never turned in because
papers were never turned in because the day the cease
fire was signed, a motar barrage was launched on us on
bloody ridge wounding the CO. ANY BODY that was in
that unit will remember the day one of the medics
caught some scract from a enemy motar in his butt.
Also, my buddy was a 57 recoiles gunner and would
snipe the enemy across from us on horseshoe ridge. And
don't forget BED CHECK CHARLIE

Comments: Uncle George my my mom Katie Schmidt Kramer's younger
brother. Her older brother, Charles Mathison, was kia
aboard the Battleship Arizona. Uncle George was
awarded the Silver Star. Does anyone know how I can go
about obtaining the information which details the
action which led up to his receiving this medal. Your
help would be appreciated. My mom passed away in
November 2006 and she would never share with my sister
Karen, brother Jack or myself these painful
experiences. Any information would be greatly
appreciated.

Sincerely,

Bill Kramer

Comments: My Dad Joe Gallo was hurt at Heartbreak Ridge in 1952 (the 235th, he was a Forward observer for a Heavy Mortar platoon) and never received a Purple Heart from the Army.

I tried several times before he died without
success. Anyone who is still among us that remembers him or when he was burned in a fight with the Chinese that can corroborate this information it is appreciated.

Dad died in 1997 but I thought he should still get recognition, Thanks, Greg Gallo
