Comments: I am helping a Korean War veteran, John W. McFarland (Mac), write his memoirs. He
served with the 2nd Battalion, 179th Regiment, 45th Division on Bloody Ridge in
1953. He left Korea in March 1954 with the last troops of the Thunderbirds
returning home on the USNS McRae. After a 34-day journey, the McRae docked in New
York Harbor on April 19, 1954. He remembers the chaos of families joyously
reuniting with their GI, including his reunion with his wife, that took place that
day. Many flashbulbs were going off to capture the moments but, unfortunately, his
wasn't one of them. He would like to know if anyone out there was there that day
and took pictures and would be willing to permit him to use them in his book. We
have contacted the 45th Division Museum in Oklahoma City, but they do not have
photos of that event but did send us pictures of the ticker-tape parade that took
place 4 days later. Our sincere thanks to anyone who can help us.

Comments: I'm seeking out anyone who was with G Company, 179th Infantry who might have known (then) Lieutenant Jack H. Place. I believe he was company commander, possibly also with 3rd platoon. He was wounded July 27, 1953 near Pau-Gol and evacuated by M/Sgt Earl Jackson Smith who was killed returning to the command post shortly after delivering Place to the aid station. Many thought Place to be dead until he showed up at a reunion years later.
I would very much like to find a period photo of Jack and hear from anyone who has even the faintest memory of him and/or G Company activities at the time. I am interested in any photos of the time whether Place might appear or not.
I have a portrait of him from when he was in the Navy in WWII if anyone thinks they will remember a face but not the name, though he is a few years younger at that time.

The government never gave him POW status, but between the 7 days interned, as well as the month he spent in the woods after escaping before being rescued, he should have POW status. He suffers from PTSD and the government has denied his claims for disability for the last 20+ years. Any help is greatly appreciated!

We do not know the exact dates that he was overseas but we have a Christmas card he sent to his mother for 1952. It is a Headquarters 45th Inf. Division card.
My dad has dementia. He lost his discharge papers long ago. We just received a certified copy from his home town court house in Fairmont, West Virginia. We are applying for VA benefits (wish us luck there). We are applying for his complete service record from the VA and may or may not hear from them.
The reason I am writing is that his discharge papers shows my dad won two Bronze stars and the Combat infantry badge. My dad always maintained that he saw no combat in Korea. Now it is to late ask him. Does anyone remember our dad from Korea and what he did to earn two Bronzes Stars? Does your association have a list of medal recipients?

appreciate any information about A Co during their time in the
Korean War.
The members of A Co have already made theirr place in history.
I want to make sure those following in their footsteps know
about the men who went before them.
Thank you.

Comments: I am seeking verification that Co. C, 179th Infantry received the
Distinguished Unit Citation for actions during the Korean War. I
am posting this on behalf of PFC Neal Hamann, a member of that
Unit. He was told by others in his unit at a reunion that his unit
received the Distinguished Unit Citation; however, when he
requested verification and receipt thru the proper channels, he
received a reply that records were burned in a fire in 1973 and
therefor they were unable to verify receipt. If any members of Co.
C, 179th has their own personal records of the receipt of the
Distinguished Unit Citation, it would be appreciated if I could be
notified thru the email listed.
