Comments: I am helping a Korean War veteran, John W. McFarland (Mac), write his memoirs. He
served with the 2nd Battalion, 179th Regiment, 45th Division on Bloody Ridge in
1953. He left Korea in March 1954 with the last troops of the Thunderbirds
returning home on the USNS McRae. After a 34-day journey, the McRae docked in New
York Harbor on April 19, 1954. He remembers the chaos of families joyously
reuniting with their GI, including his reunion with his wife, that took place that
day. Many flashbulbs were going off to capture the moments but, unfortunately, his
wasn't one of them. He would like to know if anyone out there was there that day
and took pictures and would be willing to permit him to use them in his book. We
have contacted the 45th Division Museum in Oklahoma City, but they do not have
photos of that event but did send us pictures of the ticker-tape parade that took
place 4 days later. Our sincere thanks to anyone who can help us.

Comments: I'm seeking out anyone who was with G Company, 179th Infantry who might have known (then) Lieutenant Jack H. Place. I believe he was company commander, possibly also with 3rd platoon. He was wounded July 27, 1953 near Pau-Gol and evacuated by M/Sgt Earl Jackson Smith who was killed returning to the command post shortly after delivering Place to the aid station. Many thought Place to be dead until he showed up at a reunion years later.

I would very much like to find a period photo of Jack and hear from anyone who has even the faintest memory of him and/or G Company activities at the time. I am interested in any photos of the time whether Place might appear or not.

I have a portrait of him from when he was in the Navy in WWII if anyone thinks they will remember a face but not the name, though he is a few years younger at that time.

Comments: My grandfather, Ardist C. Lawson passed away last year. I was very close to him as he was also my best friend. I am wondering if anyone knows any information on him? The only information I have is that he was wounded in action by missile, his rank was Private First Class, his troop element in Div Inf Regt, specialty was Light weapons assault infantry leader and I have heard many funny stories of him having a pet monkey that he would take to the bars with him. He wouldn't talk much about it as I don't blame him. I'm just curious to know what he did and what battles he fought and the kind of man he was. If anyone has any information or knows where I could get this information, please contact me.

Comments: I need some assistance. I am a veteran outreach worker and I'm currently assisting a Korean War Veteran who claims to have been a POW. He is stating that he was attached to the 45th Infantry Brigade and he, along with over 500 other American soldiers were captured and interned at Pontok(?). This gentleman was only in the camp for 7 days before he claims to have escaped. The man's name is Wilbure Bill Reid. Does anyone remember him? The government never gave him POW status, but between the 7 days interned, as well as the month he spent in the woods after escaping before being rescued, he should have POW status. He suffers from PTSD and the government has denied his claims for disability for the last 20+ years. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Comments: My dad (fooive service number 46-10-30-109. He was a Private First Class on entering active duty) was in Korea with Company B of the 179th Infantry Regiment. We do not know the exact dates that he was overseas but we have a Christmas card he sent to his mother for 1952. It is a Headquarters 45th Inf. Division card.

My dad has dementia. He lost his discharge papers long ago. We just received a certified copy from his home town court house in Fairmont, West Virginia. We are applying for VA benefits (wish us luck there). We are applying for his complete service record from the VA and may or may not hear from them.

The reason I am writing is that his discharge papers shows my dad won two Bronze stars and the Combat infantry badge. My dad always maintained that he saw no combat in Korea. Now it is to late ask him. Does anyone remember our dad from Korea and what he did to earn two Bronzes Stars? Does your association have a list of medal recipients?

Thank you,
For the Diamond family

Comments: My father passed away recently. He would never talk about his
experiences in Korea, but my daughter (his grandchild) is reading about
the War and wonders about his time there.

If you knew him we'd love to hear from you.

Thank you.

My name is Charles Koppelman from New Jersey and I
have been recently recognized by the Department of
Defense 60th Anniversary of the Korean War (KW60)
Commemoration Committee as your KW60 Ambassador.

The Committee, a three-year program initiated in
2010, seeks to honor the service and sacrifice of
Korean War Veterans, commemorate the key events of
the war, and educate Americans about the Korean Wars
significance.

The Korean War is often referred as The Forgotten
War As a KW60 Ambassador, I hope to propel Korean
War Veterans and their contribution to greater public
awareness. I will focus on establishing a local voice
of sincere appreciation for the selfless service and
sacrifices that Korean War Veterans made on behalf of
all Americans

As part of the program, I plan to thank and honor as
many of our treasured Korean War Veterans (June 25,
1950 July 27, 1953) as possible in a heartfelt and
meaningful way.

If you are a Korean War Veteran (June 25, 1950 July
