He was with the 40th Division, 224th Infantry, Company "C" at Camp McNair, Japan and then over to Korea in '52-'53. I've got a few pics and stories from his time over there, but I know that most of it was kept to himself. Fabian passed away in April of '22.

Comments: I will give this another try. I'm trying to get information concerning Medals and Ribbons awarded to the 224th during and after the Korean War.

My Dad, Cpl. Michael Murphy was with the 224th Co. G from 1950 - 1952. He was at Camp Cooke and then deployed to Japan and then onto Korea. He passed away in January and I was hoping to have a Shadow Box built in time for his Service in July. The issue I am having is getting information concerning the Medals and or Ribbons he or the Unit are awarded. I have a copy of his DD214 from his Discharge and it shows he received the Occupation Medal (Japan), UN Service Medal, Second Korean Winter (whatever that is i cannot find a medal for that), Korean Service Medal and the Combat Infantry Badge. I thought that was all there was but them I learned that in 1995 the US Congress approved another Medal from the Korean government to be worn by Korean War Veterans. So now I want to make sure I got everything he or his unit was awarded after his discharge.

If someone can please help me with this I would greatly appreciate it.

Again I am Tim Murphy on behalf of my Dad Cpl. Michael Murphy, G Co. 224th IR.

Comments: Served in Baker Company as a rifleman, then was yanked out to take over the
Countefire Platoon which was attached to the Headquarters and Headquarters
Co....Our job: to silence enemy weapons. The regiment got the nickname of
the Galahad Regiment because we were regularly thrown into situations
that needed help.
One of the most memorable such moves occurred when we, under cover
of darkness, were pulled back from the front lines, put on trucks and transported
to the train that would take us to Pusan. We were to remove all that would
identify our regiment and we were not allowed to leave the site outside the
city where we were deposited. After about two weeks there, we--under
cover of darkness we were moved to the port and boarded landing craft.
There was much speculation about our destination, much chat about our
heading for another coastal invasion to the north....but, at dawn the next morning,
an officer on our landing craft, opened a sealed envelope and announced our
mission: we were to put down the riots occuring in the prison camp on
the island of Koje-do..
Upon arrival at the beaches of Koje do, we clambered aboard waiting
trucks to head inland to the prison camp....
As we approached, we saw, inside the compunds...huge banners made
from bed sheets, upon which the prisoners had painted the message:
Welcome to the 224 Infantry Regiment..

Comments: Was initially a rifleman in Company B, but got called back and told that I must
serve in the counter fire platoon, which used equipment to locate enemy weapons
and call fire on them...which position changed when we went to Koje-do Island to
put down prisoner riots and and where our regimental commander broke the news
that only eight of us non-commissioned officers was being paid for our rank.

it appears that many non-coms in hospitals in America whom we had replaced were
still being paid for the positions we now held. Anyway, having tidied up the
mess on Koje-do we returned to the ongoing fray in Korea.

Our regiment had been dubbed The Galahad Regiment for we were moved from one hot
spot to another.

After my discharge I married and entered Santa Clara University. A story I wrote
caught the eye of Naomi Burton, one of the top literary agents, who asked if
I had a novel. I told her I didn't, but would gladly right one. Like the short
story, the novel was rooted in the Korean War experience. It was my way of
putting my combat experience on the shelf. " The Ikon " won the Phelan Award in
Literature the year it was published and is still in print.

Comments: I was among the Regular's that replaced a lot of the
National Guard personnel in June/July 1952, sailed
out of Inchon the morning the Cease Fire was
announced. I Retired from Active Duty August 1974.
What NG personnel were left when I joined them were
of fine quality soldiers, knew their job and didn't
hesitate to perform it. I only regret the loss of Pvt
Jackie White, from Joplin, MO, KIA while on a patrol
in a firefight, he was an excellent BAR man, took out
several enemy before he caught one and was taken out,
I regret that he was only 16 years old, we that knew
it were just about to report it.. So sad, even now
sad we didn't. He died in the Sata-ri valley.

Comments: didnt get to know my dad real well.as a teenager i
was an idiot and so our relationship was strained.Dad
died when i was twenty three.i know of stories about
him.one in which he was under a lot of pressure to
sent only black guy out on patrol, and my father would
not go for it at all.its a shame when you i missed
out on knowing my dad and his incredible character. He
had his faults i am sure but to follow through on
such a conviction as equality reveals a lot.these are
the types of situations that the people back at home
need to know about.I am sure thier were many acts of
courage and conviction that happened in korea which
no one got a medal for or even thanked.so if anyone
knows anything about co b 224th please let me
know.robert swart
