Comments: We recently found that my sister’s estranged father was a Bronze Star Recipient
during the Korean War. His courage on June 10, 1953 as a 20 year old kid from the
Mississippi Delta stood out and he well deserved it. At the still young age of 40,
and while celebrating a wedding anniversary with his wife, he was shot and killed
in September, 1973. I’m here humbly asking if anyone might have or know where there
may be accounts and|or pictures that I might find information about him in, it will
be greatly appreciated. Thanks to whomever it might concern and many thanks to our
military, to you who served. His name is Tommy Pinkston, PFC U.S. ARMY.

Comments: Does anyone remember Charles Herbert Borders? His nickname was Preacher. I am his great niece and have heard stories about him and no one in my family feels sure about how he passed away in April of 1953 in Korea. If anyone remembers him and has any story to share, please share. His sister, my nana, is still living and I would love to be able to tell her something about him from the people who served with him in his last years.

Thank you so much,
Stephanie

Comments: My father was born in Comerio, lived in Toa Alta (where my Mom is from) and I believe they were residing in Old San Juan when he shipped out to Korea. I was born in the Rodriguez General Hospital at Fort Brooke in San Juan.

My father is buried at the National Cemetery in Bayamon, and their records only show his service during WWII:

PEREZ-QUILES, IGNACIO
PFC US ARMY
WORLD WAR II
DATE OF BIRTH: 05/02/1921
DATE OF DEATH: 01/01/1985
BURIED AT: SECTION G SITE 1973

He was first in the Army from about April 1944 through December 1945. When I was born in February, 1951 he was in Korea with the 65th Infantry. But that service is not acknowledged or recognized.

I want to set my fathers record straight. If I dont, it will NEVER be right. I dont know what company he was with. He hardly ever talked about the war. I remember a photograph of a ship entering San Francisco, right under the Golden Gate Bridge, and my Mom said thats the ship that brought Dad back from the war. I think she said she was pregnant with me about 3 months when he left, and I was about 3 months old when he returned I was his 4th dependent, and I understand the policy was to remove soldiers from the front at that point. If all this is true, then he must have returned in May or June of 1951. Im searching for a copy of my old photostatic Birth Certificate.

I submitted a request to the National Personnel Records Center. They said the record needed to answer my inquiry is not in their files due to a fir on July 12, 1973.

I much appreciate any assistance.

Regards,

Ignacio Perez Rivera

when I transferred to the Communications Platoon (Radio). We left San Juan, PR on
the Marine Lynx, went through the Panama Canal and arrived in Japan where we were
re routed to Korea, landing in Pusan. Almost immediately we went into action. We
lost one officer and two enlisted men (Lt Torres Caban ?, Felipe Rodriguez and
another one I do not recall at this time. We were assigned to the 25th ID and 2nd
ID in the Pusan Perimeter. We were pulled from chasing the North Koreans, boarded
transports and landed in Wonsan alongside the First Marine Division. We
participated in the defense and withdrawal of the 1st Marines from the Chosin
Reservoir. We earned the Presidential Unit Citation for this action. The 65th was
the last unit to leave East North Korea on the 24th of December 1950. I was one
of the last 10 of that group. The 65th crossed the Han River, participated in the
liberation of Seoul, crossed the 38th Parallel and met Chinese forces on their
Second Offensive. The 65th fought gallantly, fighting the Chinese on our retreat
to Seoul. During this period the 65th went to the rescue of the British Batallion
that had been encircled by the enemy forces. Most of these British troops died in
this action. The enemy killed all wounded and medical personnel. We

Comments: Dear Sirs, Let me begin by thanking EVERYONE of you for your
service and your sacrifice. My great-uncle Cpl BASILIO ROMAN
SANTOS from Peñuelas Puerto Rico served with the 65th in
Korea. He came back a very different person and the family
never liked to mention the war to him. Though I understood and
appreciate their intention, the result was that we never
honored his service and now, after his death, no one even knows
ANY details of his days with the 65th. We do not know what
unit he was in, when he arrived at Korea, where he fought, the
circumstances behind his discharge, etc. Only thing I have is
the information on his grave. I searched through the existing
US ARMY records and could not find anything either. I was also
told that his record may have been lost in a fire some years
ago. Anyway, simple truth is we know nothing and I want to
change that. If ANYONE knows anything, please contact me.
Thank you and God Bless you all.

Comments: I'm writing for 2 reasons. The first is for my Dad who
served in K co from Jan. 53 - Jan 54. He was a 1Lt served
as a Platoon Leader, K co Company Commander, S1 and the
S3 for the 3rd Battalion. He was a good friend of Lt
Dankowski. He would enjoy hearing from anyone who served
with him.

The 2nd reason is I'm helping another website that is
plotting all Camps in Korea on a map. I am trying to
determine exactly where Camp Dankowski was located.

Comments: Being a Veteran from the Gulf War and a decendant of
a long line of wariors whom served with pride and
honor in the United States Army since WWII, I ask of
anyone who might have served with my father CPL(T)
Rivera, Juan A., Duty with the 65th Inf Rgt. 3rd Inf,
Korea, from 1950-1951. I have his DD214, and shows
he was awared 2 Bronze Stars, which also tells me he
survived at least two major battles. If there are
fellow members out there that mught remember him and
or have photos they could e-mail and share with us,
it would be greatly appreciated and would mean the
world to me. Thank you in advance and look foward to
hearing from you soon. God Bless!

Comments: My maternal grandfather achieved the rank of Master
Sergeant and retired shortly after the Korean
Conflict. He served in WWII and he was awarded a
Silver Star medal after he saved several officers from
a grenade attack. He was wounded in this attack and
the scars would be visible, hence, he was also awarded
the Purple Heart Medal.

My grandafather was a very quiet man and he never
shared is war experiences with us. However, about 8
years ago I found an old polaroid photograph of my
grandfather being awarded a medal in Korean by non
other than General MacArthur. This photograph was
very important, nonetheless, same was lost during my
divorce.

I have been trying to either find or get a copy of
this award ceremony photograph with no luck. I even
contacted the Veteran Administration and the local
Korean War Veteran Association. However, sad to say,
the records for the Puertorrican Veterans seem to be
totally misplaced. I do not understand why no one
kept a good record of the multiple sacrifices made by
our soldiers. But of course, this is an area that
causes me a great deal of pain and anguish.
Nevertheless, if you or your relative served in the 65
Infantery in Korea and have a copy of this awards
ceremony, please contact me at my e-mail

Thanks for your help in this matter.

Sincerely,

s/Johnny Rivera
