was KIA on February 1951 when my mother was just 6 months old. She never got to met her
dad. There is very little information about him. My grandmother had many letters he
wrote her, his metals, his flag, and other small items. There is a story that he was
killed saving his friend. Apparently, they were in a tank and standing out of it or
something. Then my grandfather say enemy soldiers and he moved his friend out and down
in to the tank to save him from the gunfire but it killed my grandfather. I would love
to learn more.

My grandfather and my great uncle served in the same unit together, but without requesting records I am unable to find any information about, well anything. My grandfather is 92 and will not/has not spoken of his time in the army, which makes me mildly curious as to what happened to him/what he had went through. When I search the information on my great uncle's grave marker, it comes back as a Puerto Rico regt. He and my grandfather are from WV so this has me completely confused. Can anyone help me or steer me in a direction I can look? I saw that President Obama requested for the Presidential Medal of Honor to be awarded to the 65th, so if this is something my grandfather deserves I would like to know. There is a very good chance most of their records were destroyed in the fire of 1973, so requesting the records may be a lost cause.

Comments: Hello:
I am the grandson of a Korean War Veteran who served in the 65th Infantry Regiment of Puerto Rico. I have requested his US Army service records, on behalf of my father due to language barriers, but I was told there was a fire in the 70’s which burnt most of the records from that time. When I requested his records, I did not have any information besides name and approximate dates of service. After years of searching, I found a website which contains some information on the whole regiment. The efforts of gathering as much information from those days increased due to US Congress awarding the regiment the Congressional Gold Medal, back in 2016. More information provided on the website allowed me to find more on him (although I cannot confirm the accuracy of it):
SGT. Ortiz Benitez, Jesus US50101919, Company E January 31, 1952.
He joined from Carolina Puerto Rico. Judging by the date of the info, it was probably gathered when he returned from the battlefield. I am not sure of the timeline and on the rank. My father believes he was an E-6 or higher. I do not know. My father is ill, and I am trying to get as much information on my grandfather, so that I can get all his awards (including his Congressional Gold Medal), rank and service history, before the Lord takes him. I find it difficult to believe that the only record of service from my grandfather was lost in that fire. He passed from cancer at the San Juan VA Hospital when I was about 3 years old (around 1977-79). I need help locating as much information as I can, but I do not even know where to start. Would the VA have his records? Or at least some additional information of his service? Could some one, please help before it is too late for my father? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Comments: My father was born in Comerio, lived in Toa Alta (where my Mom is from) and I believe they were residing in Old San Juan when he shipped out to Korea. I was born in the Rodriguez General Hospital at Fort Brooke in San Juan.

My father is buried at the National Cemetery in Bayamon, and their records only show his service during WWII:

PEREZ-QUILES, IGNACIO
PFC US ARMY
WORLD WAR II
DATE OF BIRTH: 05/02/1921
DATE OF DEATH: 01/01/1985
BURIED AT: SECTION G SITE 1973

He was first in the Army from about April 1944 through December 1945. When I was born in February, 1951 he was in Korea with the 65th Infantry. But that service is not acknowledged or recognized.

I want to set my fathers record straight. If I dont, it will NEVER be right. I dont know what company he was with. He hardly ever talked about the war. I remember a photograph of a ship entering San Francisco, right under the Golden Gate Bridge, and my Mom said thats the ship that brought Dad back from the war. I think she said she was pregnant with me about 3 months when he left, and I was about 3 months old when he returned I was his 4th dependent, and I understand the policy was to remove soldiers from the front at that point. If all this is true, then he must have returned in May or June of 1951. Im searching for a copy of my old photostatic Birth Certificate.

I submitted a request to the National Personnel Records Center. They said the record needed to answer my inquiry is not in their files due to a fir on July 12, 1973.

I much appreciate any assistance.

Comments: three of my cousins served in the Korean War. Their names were Luis Guzman ramos, Jose Manuel Ramos Garcia and Santiago Ramos Garcia. Santiago was wounded and Luis suffered from Post traumatic stress because he was trapped by the Koreans. I do not know a lot about their stories because I was a child at the time they returned to Puerto Rico. I am one of the few family members left and would love to get some information on them and perhaps add their medals to our family book. They were all from Fajardo, Puerto Rico. Any help would be appreciated. Pleas4e call or email.

Keywords: Jose Manuel was called NiNu. Santiago was called Chaguin. Chaguin was wounded at one of the Hills, but I do not remember the name.

Comments: I am looking for anyone who served with my uncle, Guillermo Cuyar, in Korea from the 65th INF. I am trying to compile a family history and unfortunately, he passed away many years ago. I know he was involved in some battles and was briefly captured but he never spoke about them. I am particularly trying to find out the unit he was assigned to and any other important facts. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all for your service.
