Comments: Trying to find out anything I can on James Maxie Thomas being burned in a foxhole
explosion. James spent 30 to 40 days in a field hospital tent after he was burned.
He was Sergeant First Class and never got a purple heart. He was the last man of
his buton out of the foxhole.

James did receive S Badge M-1, Combat Infantry Badge, Un SVC Medal, Korean SVC
Medal with 2 Bronze Campaign Stars!

James was in Korea September 1950- June 1952 he fought on the front lines for 11
and half months. Heartbreak Hill and Old Baldy . James is still living and turned
90 the 19 of January .

Comments: Hello, I am a Student Researcher at the University of Tennessee. I am working with the VA to tell the stories of individuals buried in the Knoxville National Cemetery.

I am looking for any information on PVT JAMES BRADLEY UPCHURCH. From what I have learned, Private Upchurch was KIA on April 25, 1951.

I am interested in any information on the man if anyone has anything.
Useful Information could include what the 25th was doing in April of 1951, any leads on Upchurch and so on. Our goal is to tell the individual stories of those men and women who served this country and those who gave their lives, like Private Upchurch, in the name of Freedom

Thank you

Comments: Looking for anyone that knew my dad, 85 years old who was wounded On November 28, 1950, he was defending a hill near Parwon Myon, North Korea when his position was overrun. Found an account that goes like this Beginning about 3p.m. on 27 November, Chinese assault troops drove in K and L Company outposts. The combat quickly became hand-to-hand in places, especially in K Company. Lieutenant Hinewood, a forward observer with K Company for the mortar company, had a fist fight with a Chinese soldier. Captain Hughes, K Company commander, stayed with his men two hours after being wounded. K Company held its lines against repeated enemy attacks and quickly sealed off one enemy penetration and subsequently restored its own position. An estimated two Chinese Regiments assaulted the 2nd and 3rd battalions of the 35th Infantry during the night, withdrawing from the battle only with the coming of dawn. Alter daylight, a great many Chinese dead could be seen in front of the company perimeters. The dead were especially numerous in front of K Company. There were 374 counted enemy dead and an estimated 600 Chinese soldiers killed from the defensive fires and fighting of the 35th during the night. Six Chinese prisoners were captured, all from the 117 Division, 39th Army.

Brig. Gen. George B. Barth later stated that the stand of K Company in hurling back repeated Chinese attacks probably averted a major disaster. The Chinese attacks against it were persistent because that is where the Chinese command intended to open a penetration. More than a division of enemy troops, about 10,000, according to prisoner information, stood ready behind the assault teams to pour through the penetration into the rear of the 35th into the rear of the infantry lines if K company had broken.

Comments: My late father Bill Whit Whitten, out of Windsor Locks, Conn, served with the 25th Infantry division, in the 35th infantry regiment in Korea, during the spring (maybe winter too) of 1953. He was a combat veteran, any information from people who served with or near my dad would be greatly appreciated. We talked about the war but since his death in 2009, I have become interested in the activities of his company. His old buddy's name was Chuck Conner (s), hailing from NY state, I think.
After the war he couldn't eat red meat, would hit the dirt if fireworks went off close by without warning, and once broke a hunters rifle against a tree when he let off a shot 10 feet behind us while we were fishing. He was a gentleman and that was absolutly out of character. In other words the war affected him well into the 1970s if not the rest of his life.

if the person was related to the rancher of the same name who in the late 1800s

Comments: I'm looking for anyone that knew PFC Harley Herbster.
Harley was my grandfather's cousin. He served with the
25th Infantry Division, 35th Infantry Regiment. He was
in Korea in 1950. He is listed as KIA on August 18,
1950. He would have been 26 at the time of his death.
I know he was awarded a Purple Heart, along with some
other medals. But I know nothing else of Harley's
service. If anyone served with him or knows more of
what happened, I would be grateful to hear from you! I
know it's too much to hope for, but any information or
if a photo of Harley exists, I would be ecstatic!
Thank you!

Amanda
