I seem to remember a patch he had that he called the 8th army patch. I don't know how this relates to hi service in Korea.

Comments: My Dad's name was Aubrey Linn Reed. He was with the Army National Guard from his home state of Arkansas. He was a sergeant. I can't be sure but I think he was a cook.
I would appreciate anything you can dig up that would help me to complete our family tree. I really need to know if Dad gave the Guard any information about his parentage, etc.
I almost forgot, my Dad served in Korea when I was born. I was two years old before I got to meet him. My birth date was 6/2/1950.
I did get some more info from my Mom. She said Dad was a corporal when he was in Korea but came home a Sargeant. She could not remember his Unit# but she said he was part of Company B in the Army Natl Guard Auxillary from Paris, Ark. He was a gunner on a Long Tom.
He began his tour in Korea in Jan. of 1951. He was stationed at Ft Hood near Waco, TX in November of 1950. His Captain was Aloysius (Ollie) Zeiler. Captain Zeiler's Aide was Wm J. "Popeye" Wright. That's all Mom remembers.

Comments: Someone out there knows some details of this. In the early part of Korean War, I witnessed US troops bording a chartered commercial airliner. They were guarded by armed MPs (45 Cal grease guns). Talking to one MP, I learned that they were pulled from their units at a nearby post after having gone AWOL, and were on their way to the front in Korea. Dressed in class A uniforms, full packs and M-1 weapons (without Bolts)and as I recall, they numbered about 2 bus loads.
Someone must know more details and I'd like to hear from them. For the sake of later verifying some responses, I have not mentioned the following:
1.Where the above took place, state, airport
the nearby post they were leaving.
2. The unit they were attached to at the
time they were AWOL.

Comments: My dad has never been one for exaggeration...I believe that movies could never portray the real story--whether Spillberg or whomever. It is unfortunate that life was so horrid, during that period to leave bitter so many fine men, as my dad.
I believe him when he says that nobody can do those times justice...nevertheless, when I saw "Private Ryan," I cried...the strength of the portrayal was awesome--and to know that it was not good enough was devistating.
And any insight into history, these days, is an accomplishment.
Keywords: Time frame, unknown...dad is 78 yrs old. Was in Korean war as medic--called himself a "body-bagger" and has never really talked about it otherwise. Said he "ate a lot of goat" while there. He knows about front-boat landings and had to cross into heavy artillary. He won't watch "Saving Private Ryan" because he says that "nothing can portray'in the movies, what they went through in real life.'"
